*MUSIC: You know that song at the end of Juno, "Anyone Else But You"? The one Ellen Page and Michael Cera sing to one another? And it's all cute and sad? Well,it was co-written and originally recorded by Kimya Dawson, former half of the Moldy Peaches, and she's over in the East Bay tonight at 924 Gilman. She performs along with Angelo Spencer at this all-ages show. (No booze allowed, by the way.) .......

Rope Burn by Still Flyin' (directed by Isobel Knowles) Still Flyin': Not to knock (heh) its former incarnation, the Odeon, but we love the Knockout. From obscure DJ nights to live bands, this nightclub seems to pull it off minus any affectation -- a difficult feat for any artsy venue to accomplish. Tonight head over to the Outer Mission spot and catch beloved San Francisco-based supergroup Still Flyin', along with rock-ish outfits Yellow Fever......

It’s about that time again (for the first time). Time to heap a whole year’s worth of praise on to several lucky and talented establishments that did us the kind service of getting us drunk. Yes indeed, ‘tis the season for recognizing the best of the best, the places that don’t settle for second place, that realize life is a marathon not a sprint, and any other clichéd ‘successories’ slogans you can think of. Crack-a-lack-a!!......

A second fire in the Inner Mission in about as many months, as firefighters rushed to a burning apartment building on Capp Street between 18th and 19th Street early Thursday morning. Three people were killed by the fire, which burned through a stairway, and eleven people (including four firefighters) were injured. Witnesses report people jumping through windows in an attempt to reach safety. There's some horrifying pictures of the blaze from KTVU here.
And for those of you frantically reading your Treos on I-80 while stuck in traffic trying to get from the City into Oakland, the reason for the delay is a big rig that caught on fire on the Bay Bridge. All cars are being turned around at Yerba Buena. The big rig blew a tire, which caught on fire and then ignited the cab of the truck. The truck's past the tunnel, on the Oakland side of the lower deck. Two lanes on the westbound side have been closed down as well (we're not sure, why, though). Now stop reading the internet in your car! You could hurt someone!

In the ongoing fight between sobriety and drunken mayhem, Barrespondent Drew whispers to sobriety that it really never had a chance and should probably give up. Oh Inner Mission, we can never stay mad at you. Every time we get fed up waiting for a drink and vow never to frequent your bars ever again, we do so knowing full well that we’ll be back at the trough soon enough. After all, where else......

Blurring the line between casual and problematic drinking, Barrespondent Drew does the ‘hard work’ of walking into unfamiliar bars of the bay area. That way if he gets nearly beaten to death for not being a local, you’ll at least have a negative review to serve as a heads up. My, what noble work! Coming to the slightly shocking realization that there just aren’t that many parts of town we haven’t completely worn out......
