As you do not live on a remote island far from Facebook and Twitter and the news (sigh, IF ONLY), you are likely aware that Paul Manafort, who managed now-President Donald Trump's campaign for office, surrendered to federal agents following an indictment against him announced Monday morning that contained allegations including tax fraud, conspiracy against the US, and money laundering.

Per DCist, the Department of Justice said via written statement that:

Paul J. Manafort, Jr., of Alexandria, Va., and Richard W. Gates III, of Richmond, Va., have been indicted by a federal grand jury on Oct. 27, 2017, in the District of Columbia. The indictment contains 12 counts: conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, false statements, and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts. The case was unsealed on Oct. 30, 2017, after the defendants were permitted to surrender themselves to the custody of the FBI.

But the DoJ isn't the only one issuing statements, as San Francisco's own Nancy Pelosi released her own while the rest of us were likely still getting ready for work. Here are her full remarks, sent to media this morning:

Even with an accelerating Special Counsel investigation inside the Justice Department, and investigations inside the Republican Congress, we still need an outside, fully independent investigation to expose Russia’s meddling in our election and the involvement of Trump officials. Defending the integrity of our democracy demands that Congress look forward to counter Russian aggression and prevent future meddling with our elections.

Pelosi also tweeted the statement, reiterating in the body of the tweet the need for the investigation to be independent of the current administration.

Obviously, given the freshness of the news, it remains to be seen if Pelosi's demands will be met. As of publication time, Manafort remains in custody. You can read the full indictment below.

A 15-year veteran of San Francisco's public school system is facing federal felony charges, after he was allegedly found in possession of at least one image of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Christian Lancaster, who the Ex says taught at Thurgood Marshall High School in the Bayview "from at least 2002" until January 8, 2016, "was charged in a July 14 federal grand jury indictment with one count of knowingly possessing and gaining access to one or more images of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct," Bay City News reports.

According to the indictment, which wasn't unsealed until his initial court appearance Thursday, Lancaster "had or accessed at least one image of prepubescent minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct for an unknown amount of time until last September," the Ex reports.

San Francisco Unified School District spokesperson Gentle Blythe tells the Chron that Lancaster had “no record of wrongdoing” during his lengthy career at the school, and "had passed background checks prior to being hired."

According to Lancaster's bio on the Thurgood Marshall site (which has since been removed), the former Government and Economics teacher was born in Stockton and had lived in San Francisco for nearly 20 years.

“His fascination with history and government is equaled only by his commitment to challenging students to learn about the world around them,” his bio read.

At his appearance before U.S. Magistrate Donna Ryu in Oakland Thursday, Lancaster surrendered and was taken into custody. He'll remain there until at least July 27, the date of his bail hearing.

U.S. Attorney Brian Stretch says that Lancaster's defense attorney has yet to be named. If convicted, Stretch says, Lancaster could face a fine as high as $250,000 and up to 20 years in prison.

Today a federal judge told the prosecutors to "re-craft its perjury case against Barry Bonds." The judge on the Bonds case, Susan Illston, claims that they "improperly lumped multiple alleged offenses into each of four counts of its indictment of the former Giants star." Whoops. Illston slammed the Bonds indictment, which was handed up last November, as "duplicitous." According to the Chron:

By law, the government can only accuse a person of one crime per count of an indictment. But the judge said that in Bonds' perjury case, the slugger was being accused of telling as many as five different lies under oath in each count of the indictment.

She said the government could correct the flaws by rewriting the indictment or filing a new one.

To recap: former baseball great, Barry Bonds, in case you've been living under a rock or only watch womens figure skating to get your sports fix, is charged with perjury, obstruction of justice and lying under oath after denying that he used illegal from care of BACLO. The prosecutors have until March 21 to get it together.

Many, many people want to know just what, pray tell, goes on inside the mind of Barry Bonds. Or maybe just a handful do. Who's to say?

And much like the fog-laced hills of San Francisco, he is a complicated man of mystery. Or perhaps he's just a greedy, self-centered prick. (Deep down, who isn't? And remember, some people strongly defend the guy, like ESPN's Jemele Hill did just today.) Again, who's to say?

Much of it involves Barry's lack of true friends, McGwire jealousy, and shrunken testicles, but we would like to think he's more complex man than that. Bonds' attorney issued a statement, calling malfeasance on everyone involved, except his client, and now wants to go after the Justice Department for doing all sorts of bad things to his boy. Bond's flunky, Greg Anderson, was also released from prison, and speculation is that either that the Government doesn't need him anymore. (Or that he finally sang like a bird.)

And just to be clear, the indictment says they have proof Barry was on the juice.

Reaction, of course, abounded. The Giants issued a statement saying it was a very sad day. Bud Selig issued a statement saying it was a very sad day. George Mitchell of the Mitchell investigation issued a statement saying it was a very sad day. Even the President, who as owner of the Texas Rangers had a veritable drug bazaar going on with his team, weighed in to say it was a...very sad day. And somewhere out there, Henry Aaron jumped up and down shouted "take that, bitch." On local message boards, the reaction was everywhere, from a shrug variety to apologist to disgust at everyone and everything. Elsewhere, noticeable glee can be discerned.

Dude. Duuuuuuude.

After a four-year federal investigation, today cranky baseball icon Barry Bonds was indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice. Ouch. And Jesus. He's like Pete Rose, but worse. Which? Again, ouch.

According to CBS 5, "[w]hile Bonds was chasing Aaron amid the adulation of San Franciscans and the scorn of baseball fans almost everywhere else, due to his notoriously prickly personality and nagging steroid allegations, a grand jury quietly worked behind closed doors to put the finishing touches on the long-rumored indictment." Prickly is sure putting it mildly.
