Friend of SFist Troy Holden brings our attention to today's latest eye-catcher. Namely, Robert Flâneur's Exploring Google Street View. What it is is this: a Google Street View roulette doohickey that changes images every 30 seconds. It's pretty boss (but would be even bosser if someone made it into a screensaver -- hint, hint) and you can switch locations and even make it full screen. You can view Street View images from cities like Tokyo, London, Mexico City, and more.
Behold Exploring Google Street View
Photos: Carnaval 2011
Tens of thousands of revelers flooded the Mission this weekend for the epic Carnaval Parade and Festival, which was themed "Live Your Fantasy" this year.
Photos: WonderCon 2011
Photographers Tom Hilton, Bhautik Joshi, and Brian Brooks were all on the scene this weekend as thousands of costumed super- and anti-heroes descended upon downtown San Francisco for WonderCon 2011 at Moscone Center this, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.
Photos: Fauxnique/Monique Jenkinson's Rotunda Dance Performance at City Hall
Photographer Scott Owens captured some lovely photos of Monique Jenkinson's/Fauxnique's performance at City Hall on Friday as part of Dancers' Group's Rotunda Dance Series. The performance, entitled Beautility, was a "site-specific, durational solo playing with layers of symbolism that embellish San Francisco's City Hall's ornately beautiful rotunda." Jenkinson's breathtaking costume was designed by the singular talent, "Mr. David."
Photos: Lights on Market Street Launch
The San Francisco Arts Commission launched its Lights on Market Street project last night, featuring three site-specific installations by internationally-recognized light artists, Jim Campbell, Paul Notzold, and Theodore Watson.
Weekend Vignettes
It looks like Bay Area photographers were busy this weekend. Check out their shots.
Weekend Vignettes
What were the city's photogs up to this weekend? Let's take a look!
Weekend Vignettes
Relive the glorious Memorial Day weekend through the perspective of the SFist Flickr feed. And remember, if being back at work makes you feel depressed -- it's only four days until the next weekend!
Weekend Vignettes
Although the weekend is pretty quiet on SFist, the Contribute page is always aflutter with fresh shots added by the city's inexhaustible photogs. Be sure to tag your photos sfist!
Photos: 2010 Bay to Breakers
SFGate reports that about 60,000 people (including some creepy fundamentalist Christians), turned out for the chilly, 99th Annual Bay to Breakers race today, 5,000 of whom were serious runners.
Photos: Rally for California's Future, Civic Center
There was a huge turn-out at today's Rally for California's Future at Civic Center. The plaza was already half-full when we arrived around 4:30, and dozens of schools from elementary to college-level were well represented. Crowds of protesters were still heading toward the rally when we left at 5:30. The whole plaza was full to the brim at that point (as you can see from the photo we took from the fifth floor of the main library), and the crowd had spilled onto the library lawn.
Photo: Yesterday's Two-Alarm Fire on Nob Hill
A friend of SFist shot this photo of the two-alarm fire that took place yesterday afternoon on Bush Street between Mason and Powell. It was contained in one apartment (although it looks like a few other apartments might have seen some damage as well), and crews were able to put the fire out within fifteen minutes. No one was injured.
SFist Out and About
We're starting a new series in which we capture photos of places of interest as we're out and about. The above photos are from the Goodwill at Post and Fillmore. We've scored lots of swank stuff from this location, most notably a Hobo bag and a sweet cape, but it seemed pretty well picked over today, unless you're into Bernadette Peters on vinyl or outdated electronics.
Photos: Obama Protest at Union Square
Obama, who is currently in town for a Democratic National Convention fundraiser at the Westin St. Francis Hotel, was met with protesters from both the left and right sides this evening, the majority of which vocalized their stance on Obama's health care reform plan.
Day One of Hardly Strictly Bluegrass
What a great music tradition that brings all walks of [shirtless] fans together. We hope the weather is great for you all in the park today and tomorrow! (See our preview here.)
Photos: Park(ing) Day
It was a hot day in San Francisco for hanging out on the street during the annual Park(ing) Day, which happens worldwide. Good thing there was plenty of foliage to soak up the CO2 in many of the spots, many of which were spotted downtown and in the Mission. It was duly noted that San Francisco has plenty of green spaces when you seek them out, but it's definitely refreshing to see a small oasis here and there in the middle of such urban settings.
Photos: Four-Alarm Warehouse Fire in Bayview
Plug1 was on the scene at this morning's four-alarm fire at Wallace and Jennings in the Bayview District. The blaze started at 11 a.m. and engulfed five warehouses, nearly an entire block. Today has unfortunately been a busy one for firefighters.
Photos: Heavy Police Activity on Post Street
It's been an exciting day in the Bay Area. We were walking up Post at around 5 p.m. and encountered chaos at Larkin Street, in which the whole block was taped off with police tape. We heard the words "bomb squad" before making a detour.
Photos: San Francisco Zine Fest
Photog Steve Rhodes captured these fun and colorful photos at the San Francisco Zine Fest on Saturday. Check out the full collection on Flickr.
Depressing Empty Union Street Storefront Collage
Curbed featured this photo montage sent in by reader Ben of storefronts that are empty or for lease along Union Street from Gough to Fillmore. Check out the larger version.
Photos: San Francisco Symphony at Dolores Park
Dolores Park was packed to the gills this afternoon for the free San Francisco Symphony performance. Folks were even smartly sitting on the well-shaded medians of Dolores Street, which was closed to traffic. Ice cream from the mobile vendors was selling like hotcakes, as the bells competed with the sound of the music and acted as Pavlovian stimulation to all of the overheated kids. The Bi-Rite Creamery line also predictably extended down to the corner of the 18th and Dolores intersection.
Happy 4th of July!
Inexhaustible photog, Plug 1 of What I'm Seeing, snagged this shot, entitled "Talking in Circles" at Albany Bulb. Certainly a head-scratcher.
Photos: Huntington Park On Nob Hill
Nestled amongst the former mansions of the old railroad tycoons and silver kings on Nob Hill and directly across from the beautiful Grace Cathedral, Huntington Park is an urban oasis for retirees, freelancers, kids, canines, and the homeless alike.
Photos: Last Night's Michael Jackson Flash Party
Steve Rhodes was on the scene at last night's Michael Jackson Tribute/Flashdance Flash Mob at Justin Herman Plaza. We hear it lasted for six hours. We're surprised there weren't any zombies. Check out SF Appeal for video footage and links to more photos of the event.
Photos: Dachshund Derby
KayVee.INC made our day by snapping these shots of the adorable Dachshund Derby at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley on Saturday. Apparently, only one dog made it to the finish line, and all the others ran in the opposite direction.
Photos: Sunday Streets in the Mission
We hear today's Sunday Streets in the Mission was a success. Evidently lots of kids came out of the woodwork, too. The next one is July 19, also in the Mission.
Tough Times at the DMV
With budget cuts, and long lines, apparently this is the easiest way for disgruntled patrons at the Fell Street DMV to get out their frustrations. The colors are very harmonious though.
Photos: Tonight's Prop 8 Rally
There was a huge turnout tonight at both the City Hall and Yerba Buena rallies, and then a large chunk of people branched off toward the Castro. Stop8.org's Twitter feed informs us that a guy from the ACLU gave a rousing speech at City Hall about never giving up, and Mark Leno inspired the crowd about equal protection at Yerba Buena. Then a flatbed truck turned up with a speaker who got everyone riled up in party mode during the march.
