Bay Area filmmakers Arne Johnson and Shane King present Girls Rock! The Movie, a highly moving documentary about Portland's Rock 'n' Roll Camp for Girls, a place for girls ages eight to eighteen to learn an instrument, form their own bands, write songs, make friends, and then perform in front of 700 people -- all in a week's time. The film is opening in seven cities today -- San Francisco, Berkeley, Portland, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Seattle and will be opening in over thirty cities nationwide throughout this spring and summer. The filmmakers will be at all of the Embarcadero screenings today and tonight for Q&As, and Shane King will be there tomorrow at the 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. screenings. Check out this great interview with Arne and Shane over at Mental_Floss.

Harbor seals near the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge are now being studied to determine the effects of such exposure. Researchers hope that this new study will enlighten the scientific world, not just in terms of how toxic chemicals affect harbor seals, but how such chemicals can affect harbor seals and the people who love them, or don't (aka Canadians).

Residents in Balboa Park are taking legal action to get answers about a mysterious goo-like substance that has been oozing up out of house foundations. This greasy, disgrossting substance has afflicted at least eighteen homes on Navajo Avenue, just down the street from a MUNI maintenance yard.

This 4-bedroom, 5-bathroom house helped to land 94123 on Forbes’ Most Expensive Zip Codes list - #55 to be exact. At 2500 Lyon Street, you can live right down the street from Gordon Getty and Larry Ellison. How fun! The property lies at the entrance to the Lyon Street steps and boasts “abundant with rich and opulent architectural detailing and superb Bay views.”

Remember back in December when a tiger at the San Francisco Zoo went ballistic on a trainer and mauled her to near-death in front of dozens of visitors? Well, guess what kids…the Lion House is finally open again for your maul-viewing pleasure!

Just when we started feeling like the disconnect between today's urban youth and, well, people from our generation couldn't get any bigger, we ran into this gem outside the Metreon on Wednesday. We were on our way for a little well-deserved retail therapy at Bloomingdales during our lunch hour, when we saw this stache-adorned MUNI bus stop ad of Selma Blair on Mission at 4th. It's nice to know that mustaches are still as hilarious today as they were to us in, well, the decade between the 70s and 90s.

Earthquakes and Sabers and Sharks, Oh My!

On Monday in Modesto, a 10-year-old boy was caught a tad off guard when a hunk of ice the size of a bowling ball crashed through the roof and hit him on the head. The poor little guy was probably scared out of his mind. All nine people inside the house (Was there a party we were not invited to?) fled when the ice came through the living room ceiling. A hole in the roof measured three-feet wide.

They’re just so darn cute. Take a look at three of the four baby penguins that just moved into their new digs at the San Francisco Zoo yesterday. Riley, Charlie, Thistle, and Gnocchi (omg, too cute) are only 12 weeks old. Fresh out of “fish school,” these tuxedo-wearing chick magnets are living it up across from the Lion House on Penguin Island.
