Extreme Sporting Event Coming to Civic Center this Saturday

Extreme Sporting Event Coming to Civic Center this Saturday

Unfortunately for fans of snow, steep streets and bone-shattering aerial maneuvers, the city's original urban snowsports competition never did get to return to Fillmore street after the Pac Heights crowd booted all the unruly ski and snowboard enthusiasts off their stoops and in to some kind of extreme sports festival inside the fences of AT&T Park. But today we have news that fans of snowboards and railings will once again have a free public event where they can watch athletes attempt to injure themselves on the city's streets. Behold: The Downtown Throwdown, an urban snowboarding, rail jam competition, happening Saturday in Civic Center Plaza. more ›

SFist Goes to Icer Air

SFist Goes to Icer Air

On Saturday, we spent all day at AT&T park digging on the Esurance Icer Air 2006 . We have to admit that in terms of coolness, it wasn't quite up there with last year's event, but it more than made up for it in terms of things to do and things to see. There was skateboarding, snowboarding, ski jumping, bands, and all sorts of other cool things. And, it was all day. Even better, while ticket prices varied, you could get in and see everything you need to see for the low, low price of $10. more ›

It's Icer Air, Dude

Remember last year when they did the ski-jump in Pac Heights and there was some big fracas because some politically connected lady was having her reception nearby and it could ruin her wedding? But they did it anyways after a compromise was struck? Well, the Icer Air thing is happening again this weekend, except at Mays Field (that's AT&T Park) this Saturday. Which means there'll be ski jumps and DMX tricks and wakeboarding thrills and IT'LL BE EXTREME, dude!!!!!!!!! more ›

Happy Anniversary, Laurie Beijen!

Happy Anniversary, Laurie Beijen!

If we ever host a World Series of San Francisco Pop Culture contest, we're totally asking the question "Who's Laurie Beijen?" Ms. Beijen is, of course, the well-connected bride who made Gavin Newsom move last year's Cow Hollow ski jump event because she had a wedding planned at Flood Mansion the day it was originally set (August 27, 2005). more ›

Last Week in SFist

Last Week in SFist

Ah, Muni. How you offend us, let us count the ways. There's your misguided ideas on how to crack down on face evasion. There's the service delays. And who can forget Gavin's nomination of a completely inexpereinced guy to the MTA board? But it's not all bad -- there's the kinda cute Dockers ad and the streetcar open house. Our verdict: Streetcars rule, and the rest of Muni blows. more ›
