Sandra Bernhard's New Year's Eve Extravaganza

Sandra Bernhard's New Year's Eve Extravaganza

The last time we saw Sandra Bernhard, which was at Bimbo's earlier this year, we almost walked into her as we were leaving the ladies room and she was making her entrance from the back of the theater, crooning "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." After a stagehand or security guy or au pair grabbed and shook the holy hell out of us, preventing us from colliding with Ms. Sandra, we went back to our seat, shamefaced. Naturally, out of fear, we can never ever see her again. Ever. But you sure can. In fact, you can catch her during her annual New Year's Eve stint here in glorious San Francisco. more ›

SFist Reviews... Ingrid Michaelson & Melee

SFist Reviews... Ingrid Michaelson & Melee

Jumping into a quickly growing crowd, we looked down at our watch and it said 8:45pm. What was Ingrid Michaelson already doing on stage? Right before leaving our house, we checked the website: 8pm - Doors Open, 9pm - Show Starts. Boy, were we surprised to find out Michaelson had already been playing for 15 minutes. Maybe it's fate, karma or maybe just bad planning but this is the second time we've missed Michaelson's full... more ›

Check out this musical loosely based on the rise of the Supremes tonight at 7 p.m. at the Castro Theatre, Castro and Market Streets; $9.50. more ›

SFist Goes to the Theater: No Parole

SFist Goes to the Theater: No Parole

Except for Mark Jackson, ACT, and a bushel of other playhouses we’re totally forgetting, sometimes it’s hard to find theatrical events in San Francisco that hit hard without leaning on antagonizing political bullshit or outrageousness in sequins. Carlo D’Amore’s hyper and “semi-autobiographical” No Parole does just that. Why? Well, it’s got cocaine! It’s got a Peruvian diva-like matriarch! It’s got riches-to-rags immigrants! It’s got a faultless one-man performance! It’s got the disenfranchised and the... more ›

We Read The Weeklies

We Read The Weeklies

Last week's winner, as picked by SFist Sarah -- the Bay Guardian! Steven T. Jones takes over the opening editorial from Tim Redmond this week. It does not mention Burning Man! Recalls go too far. Club 6 -- still open. Why can't the Chron make money? Now serving at Cafe Gratitude: "I Am....Sued." San Francisco water may be causing rashes. Thank goodness Ed Jew doesn't have to worry about that! (okay, to be fair, we're sending the water all over the area so it might be in the Burlingame system too). Cover: Marke B's Club Guide, a glossy insert. Cute picture of bears! (picture not online.) Goth band comes to town. K Records founder Calvin Johnson has a retro haircut. And Frameline! Oh yeah -- and vote for us for best blog in the Best Of! more ›

SFist Interviews Scott Campbell

SFist Interviews Scott Campbell

San Francisco artist Scott Campbell is probably the busiest Scott Campbell there is. This is a tall order, since there seem to be pretty ambitious Scott Campbells in every town. (And, no, actor Campbell Scott doesn't count.) We even venture to say that Scott Campbell is also probably the happiest and cleverest person there is, and as his paintings illustrate, the two definitely go hand-in-hand. Scott is the Art Director/Concept Artist at Double Fine Productions, creators of the acclaimed Psychonauts computer game, and he's a regular contributor to the Hickee comic anthology, the latest edition of which is due out this June. His work has also been featured in several various publications. April is especially busy for Scott. He is currently showing his solo work at Cowboys & Angels through June 5th, and the opening is tonight from 7 to 10 pm. Scott is also part of four different group shows this month. Here's an exhaustive list: • "Picks of the Harvest" at Thinkspace Gallery in Los Angeles, opens this Friday and runs through April 27. • "I Am 8 Bit" at Gallery 1988 in Los Angeles, opens April 17 and runs through May 12. • "The Indie," part of the grand opening of Gallery 1988 in conjunction with the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco, April 21 through May 12. • "Music of Hickee Mountain" at Red Bird Studios in Montreal, April 26. Then, hopefully Scott can take a break until June 7th, when he and the Hickee gang have another show in Portland at the Pony Club. (Jeez, we're just tired from typing all of this out!) You can also buy some of Scott's prints online for a mere $20–30! That is, if we haven't snatched them all up already. more ›

Death Race 2007

Death Race 2007

Hey kids, remember Critical Mass? Did you know it still happens? Why, we haven't heard that much of them since the Great Bicycle Uprising in 1997 when they (or the police) staged a mini-riot after His Willieness tried to crack down on them. Today, they're back in the news as a new story of wild behavior is making the rounds. The story comes from today's Matier & Ross and to make a long story short, a nice, typical mini-van owning, suburban family was out in the city celebrating a birthday and got caught right smack-dab in the middle of Critical Mass. According to the story, it quickly devolved into Bikers Gone Wild. more ›

When The Lights Go Down In The City

When The Lights Go Down In The City

There sure are a lot of fans of The Decemberists, judging by the fact that they're about to play tonight and Friday night here at the relatively giant Warfield Theater. If you haven't heard their new album The Crane Wife, we're giving you a chance to win a copy of it plus a 20"x10" lithograph signed by all 5 members of the band. We'd show you a photo of the lithograph if we had one, but just trust that it'll be a collector's item regardless. That's one thing jumping to a major label will buy you: fancier schwag. (Contest ends 10/25; winner will be notified via email.) more ›

Rising From the Depths...

Godzillafest is underway now at the fabulous Castro Theatre, and we're giddy with happiness. As we pointed out previously, festivals like this might be disappearing from our beloved theatre, so SFist gives this fest its biggest endorsement. more ›
