The Powell-Hyde Street cable car line shut down for the rest of the day today. The cable running beneath the car was "frayed," it seems. Frayed? That...sounds scary. We wonder if any cars have plummeted down one of our lovely hills due to frayed cables snapping.

Don't forget it's still Carnaval! But you can check out the following events today too.
What's the price of a free society? Lunatics running around loose: online threats have lead UC Hastings to shut down, just for today. What are the threats? Who's responsible? We don't know. What we do know is there are a lot of unhappy, unpredictable, desperately fragile folks in the world, some of whom have had the bad luck of being burdened with pain from which it may seem impossible to ever recover; and we can only hope that our compassion for their misfortune is never fully erased by our anger at their deeds.
Tourists looking for that oh so wonderul, oh so expensive cable car ride today were disappointed to discover that the Hyde Street and Mason Street cable cars were down this morning and still down as of writing this. The reason was because of an incident at Mason and Washington around 6 in the morning that resulted in injuries to two drivers.
So maybe the folks back East were all over Fake Writer JT Leroy first, but San Francisco-based author and journalist Jack Boulware has a piece in Salon on Leroy creator Laura Albert (aka Laura Victoria) that looks at the person behind the persona while also painting a pretty vivid picture of what it was like to live in San Francisco in the 1990s.
Because they have free Wi-Fi connection, we could have written this review live from Nook, in the heart of Russian Hill. But, despite our internet addiction, we prefer to travel with a simple moleskin notebook (no lines). Nook is a quirky little cafe identified by rosy splashes of colour and warm red and dark woods that brightly fill the space previously occupied by a quiet but cool-looking architects office. (Lets hope they just moved on instead of under.) Shoot for the best spot: There are banquettes around the edge of the room that afford the best opportunities for nosing at the other customers. If you are in a more day-dreamy mood then the window seats are particularly appealing, especially if the warm afternoon sun is grazing through the glass at just the right angle so that the heat melts onto your skin and you can gaze out idly at the Hyde Street Cable Cars clunking on by.
A 12-year-old boy in the Bayview's getting grounded for a long time, after stealing the keys to the family van and practicing for that learners' permit three years early. The boy hit three parked cars (and totaled one) before jumping out of the destroyed van and trying to make a break for it, at which point the cops swooped in and returned him to his parents.
In another case of someone making a break for it, a seal pup they're calling "New Year" was found wandering on Hyde Street by Fisherman's Wharf -- again. Animal technicians at the Marine Mammal Center had previously found New Year doing some window-shopping on the wharf on Jan. 1 (thus the name) and had returned her to the bay near Pier 39 at that time. Maybe New Year just wants some of that In and Out.
And your final person-on-the-loose story, a woman is recovering after losing control of her Lexus and ramming it into the Santa Clara Kaiser Permanente's ER. At least they didn't have to take her very far for treatment, right? The ER was closed for three hours but has since reopened. The woman was driving to the hospital to pick up her husband.

The National Maritime Museum, at the Hyde Street Pier at the very end of Fisherman’s Wharf, hosts a chantey sing on the first Saturday of every month!
