It might feel like a typical spring day today, but that won't last long! Record high temperatures are expected in the Bay Area this week, with some spots hitting the low 90s.

According to Mark Strudley, a meterologist with the National Weather Service, who spoke with the Chron, by Tuesday temperatures in Livermore, Antioch, Santa Rosa, and San Jose will hit the mid 80s.

By Wednesday, KRON 4 reports, the East and South Bays should expect temperatures in the 90s, a record for this time of year, Strudley says.

San Francisco will also be hot on Wednesday, with temperatures in the 80s, Strudley says. I advise you to start planting "I think I'm coming down with something" seeds at work today and tomorrow, so when you call in sick on Wednesday it has that extra air of veracity.

And call in sick you should, as Wednesday will be the single hot day this week, Strudley says. Temperatures will sharply drop on Thursday, and by Friday there might even be rain. So gather ye hooky-playing rosebuds while ye may!

Video: As SF Hits Its Hottest Temps In Five Years, SF Zoo Otters Frolic In The Ice

SF Zoo animals are, literally, cooler than you.

Arts & Entertainment

Hot

otter

sf zoo

temperatures

weather

Eve Batey

In an attempt to cool down yesterday, I went to China Beach, which was a stupid idea because a) packs of poorly-supervised kids made me super anxious by playing in the dangerous surf and b) going out in the sun was even hotter than sitting in my stuffy apartment. The scene from my towel:

Thank god the staffers of the SF Zoo are smarter than I am! As opposed to cooling their animals off by lying them on a towel under the punishing sun (my not-so-brilliant plan), they made an ice bath for their otters, and hit their ostriches with the hose, as you can see in the video below.

In case you are somehow oblivious to air temperature: it's hot today. Like sweaty keyboard hot. And while there's a gentle breeze keeping things from becoming simply unbearable (read: 83 degrees), that breeze may turn into a stagnant, lung-clogging, smog-filled stillness come tomorrow. So, to preserve your tender bronchioles and alveoli, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District has declared Saturday, September 7th an official Spare the Air day.

We've already cracked the 80-degree threshold for Friday and forecasted temperatures, which are never really reliable in the city anyway, are expected to hit the upper 70s tomorrow as well. Those warm temperatures, combined with low winds mean vehicle exhaust will be especially suffocating over the weekend. Or maybe we'll just end up with a nice warm Saturday night.

Anyhow, the BAAQMD recommends you avoid trying to get around (or out of) the city via internal combustion engine and instead opt for public transit, a bicycle or your own two feet. (Caution: these modes of transit have been known to produce an undesirable byproduct known as "sweat.")

That said, now would be as good a time as any to give Bay Area Bike Share a spin.

Ask SFist: It's So Hot

Via the editor's inbox, we received the following setup:

misc

ask sfist

Hot

weather

Brock Keeling

Via the editor's inbox, we received the following setup:

We consistently have loved everything that Eenie Meenie Records has put out, including Division Day. They will be supported by A-Sides, an indie-rock band from Philadelphia. It should be a great show!

The Hands (pictured to the right) are a straight-up rock band from Seattle, Washington. We wanted to recommend The Hands, playing over at Kimo's in Nob Hill on Friday night, but when we googled Kimo's (to find out more information about the venue), we realized that Kimo's didn't even have a website. This is 2008, right? We checked out reviews on yelp and boy we're we surprised. Kimo's was reviewed as being "dirty and disgusting" with the "worst sound ever." Ouch. There weren't too many favorable reviews posted. (Kimo's rating is a crappy two out of five stars.) For a band who is playing SXSW later this month, we're a bit surprised they aren't playing Bottom of the Hill or Slim's. We're wondering, is it really worth going to Kimo's? From what we've read, we're a bit worried. What do you think?

The UK has already showed their love for Robyn and the EP, as her track “With Every Heartbeat” reached #1 in the charts there. Over in Berkeley, the Audiophiles, will be opening over at Blakes for The Federalists. These four high school guys from San Francisco have been tearing up the local music scene for awhile now and they deserved to be noticed. Update: The Audiophile show is on Friday, not Thursday.

Friday, you have two choices: The Bruises or Editors. If you like smaller venues that serve up amazing local music, then head over to the Red Devil Lounge for The Bruises' CD release party. "We just make music we like, without trying to be a part of any fad or musical trend," says guitarist/singer Jen Black. Now, if you want to see a huge, genuine rock show, then the Editors/Hot Hot Heat/Louis XIV concert at the Warfield, is the place to be. SFist's Krissy saw their 2006 show and said, "Though we’re hard-pressed to find the originality in it, Editors do what they do extremely well." Sounds good enough for us.
