Update on Tandem Bike Hit and Run

Streetsblog SF reported today that SFPD has issued a rare press release for the hit and run involving cyclist Andrew Bennett and his 4-year-old son while riding a bike with a tandem extension, which occurred at 18th and Valencia on July 1st. Bennett fractured his spine, but his son was not injured.

Hit and Run: 18th & Valencia

Yesterday morning, PT Cruiser allegedly plowed through a red light at 18th and Valencia streets, striking an "adult riding a grey steel frame bicycle which had a blue childrens add on tandem bike ridden by a four year old boy." Also, one cyclist's spine was fractured. Ow.

Good grief, what is going on in the city of Richmond? First, some pigs gang rape a woman because she had a rainbow flag stick affixed to the back of her car. Then, on Saturday at around 6 p.m., a female cyclist was hit twice by two separate vehicles. Laura Casey, 49, was riding her bike when "a white, four-door sedan rear-ended her," knocking her to the ground. As Casey screamed for help, according to reports, she was fatally "struck by a second vehicle, which dragged her 25 feet, then drove away." If you have info on who might have killed Casey, please call the Richmond Police Department at 510-620-6655.

A little before midnight on Sunday, at the notoriously dangerous Octavia and Market Street intersection, a driver plowed into a 27-year-old bicyclist, injuring her and killing her dog "who was either being carried or riding in a bike basket," according to San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens.

The man suspected of mowing people down during a hit-and-run spree in August 2006 , Omeed Aziz Popal, 30, pleaded not guilty today in San Francisco Superior Court. Really.

-- A Vallejo husband and father, Kevin Owens, 41, went though with a murder/suicide pact (with himself, we guess) on Friday night. He shot and killed his wife, Stacey Owens, 38; wounded his two-year-old daughter; and then turned the gun on himself (right after "a big Thanksgiving dinner at their home Thursday night.") This happened on the 300 block of Carousel Drive. Owens' 10-year-old son managed to escape the bloodbath, run to a neighbor's,...

This morning at around 1:15 a.m., an unidentified woman walking on Grand Avenue in Oakland was struck and killed by a passing car. She died at the scene. According to Bay City News, the vehicle then hightailed it northbound on Grand Avenue. Jerk. So far there is no description of the car or person that killed the woman. Of course, if any of you were up at that hour, kicking it in Oakland and...

Oh No, Chris Kavanaugh! Berkeley's own Ed Jew, a Green Party member of the Berkeley rent board who was actually living (and litigating with his landlord) in Oakland, pled not guilty to three charges of voter fraud, one charge of perjury, and one of grand theft (for taking a stipend from the Berkeley rent board) yesterday. Kavanaugh spent Friday night living in the Santa Rita jail before being released on $30,000 bond, and will report back to court on Oct. 26. Kavanaugh has reportedly told other board members that he lives in Berkeley but his girlfriend lives in Oakland.

Update: Yikes. According to Bay City News, a fatal hit-and-run in the Castro took the life of a "45- to 50-year-old skater" (!?) 60-year-old man 77-year-old Roger Tennyson (or maybe someone else, or Rainbow Brite -- the victim's stats keep changing today) near Duboce Park at around 1:30 a.m. this morning. This comes on the heels of another hit-and-run incident: a member of the Canadian Navy was fatally stuck at Howard Street and the...

Here's todays news headlines

Last week's winner, the SF Weekly. Josh Wolf's mom writes a letter, as does transgender activist Chris Daley and an angry rebutter to Hiya Swanhuyser 's article about a rural rock documentary. The Bouncer's article about Huey Lewis and the mentally disabled won an award and is included in the Best Music Writing of 2006 anthology. Congrats, Bouncer! Are you an Apologist for the Blue Angels? If you're SFist Jon, the answer is yes. Skater art in the basement of the Hall of Justice. Cover article: Did a local fisherman get killed in a hit and run boating accident in the Bay? Chris Daly, not the transgender activist, will be at the CELLspace 10th Anniversary party on Saturday. Meredith eats at the Westfield Food Court -- sorry, we meant "Emporium." SFist Ced is so disgusted by this, he refuses to review it. An awesome Shins fan at the Download Music Fest. Lily Allen says some crazy stuff, and Bing Ji Ling picks his favorite ice cream places. Man, if you want to go drag-racing, don't kill members of a royal family -- the 18-year-old suspect burst into tears after a judge in San Mateo County refused to lower her bail from $3 million. The DA was unmoved, saying, "Highway 101 is not a video game and it's not a racetrack." That's right -- that's what 280 is.

Let the ambulance-chasing jokes begin! A Stanford law student has pled no contest to charges that she stole an ambulance and drunk-drove it around town last October. Julia Powell, through her lawyer, claims it was an unfortunate combination of alcohol and the painkillers she was taking for shin splints. Shin splints? Are they giving people Ambien for that these days?

Lots of accident-related news today. First off -- crank up "Livin' On A Prayer" because like Bon Jovi says, it's slippery when wet. A sudden downpour in Santa Clara led to 13 -- yes, that's 13, not a typo -- separate accidents in under an hour on three separate highways -- 280, 680, and 87. No one was seriously injured, but a few drivers were taken to the hospital, and traffic was a nightmare. CHP reminds everyone that it's not just the rain's fault if you're speeding. Man, what a way to kick 13 people when they're down.
