The above photo, from a series by Your Waitress, is of HiMY SYeD placing candles as part of his art piece and vigil to commemorate the one month point since the horriffic tsunami in the Indian Ocean. SFist also posted the personal story and photographs of Wyatt Gallery, who recently returned from the scene of the disaster in Sri Lanka. The event tomorrow will again be held at Ocean Beach and starts at 4:30, or an hour before nightfall, this time between Lincoln and the windmill. HiMY will be putting together one of his patented "Outstallations," which will be a huge drawing of the Indian Ocean coastlines done with paper held in place with chopsticks. We were there when he did his last piece, Hope, and when it was all done it was rather breathtaking. It's an amazing opportunity to help out an artist while at the same time coming to your own terms with the tragedy and its aftermath. On a chilly but still night on Ocean Beach, SFist and HiMY SYeD joined interested passerby in sending a message of hope to the victims of the Tsunami, assembling HiMY's message in luminaria as the sun set to our west and rose to their east. San Francisco became one of many cities worldwide to host a small vigil as part of Global Vigil for a Global Village. HiMY's purpose was to offer people who had been distracted by holiday reveries to remind themselves to take a moment and reflect on the extent of the horrible tragedy. HiMY will be at San Francisco's UN Plaza at 5pm this evening -- drop by on your way home from work to lend your support. There will also be a gathering at 4:30 at the Downtown Berkeley BART entrance for those in the East Bay. In a story he related to SFist, when telling his activist grandfather of his plans, his grandfather took on a look of pride, but only replied "Very Difficult." Indeed, assembling crowds of somber mourning around the world is an incredibly difficult task. So we'd like to ask for your help on HiMY's behalf in contacting people who you think could help organize vigils or contact local media in their home cities for his larger memorial planned for the 26th. Our man at the SF Weekly, Nate Cavalieri, put together a less somber but no less sincere benefit event at 12 Galaxies in the Mission. The Benefit Show for the International Red Cross Disaster Relief Efforts in South Asia will be on Wednesday at 7:30 and will include performers Mark Eitzel, Jolie Holland, Sonny Smith, Jeffrey Luck Lucas, Loquat, The Herms, Dave Gleason, Mike Therieau and Pat Johnson, The Bellyachers, Tom Heyman and Bart Davenport. It will be ten dollars at the door, although you can give more, and 100% of the door and much of the drink proceeds will go directly to charities helping with the relief effort. There will also be a benefit raffle with prizes, including Amoeba gift certificates and vintage Red Cross gear.
