It's becoming a holiday (and June) tradition for a quartet of San Francisco's finest drag talents to tackle, on the live stage, word-for-word, a selection of old episodes of The Golden Girls -- that long-running sitcom about randy old ladies still beloved by gays in syndication. Given her spot-on inflection and talents for extemporaneous jabber, Heklina is always a delight as Dorothy, and backing her up are Pollo Del Mar as Rose, Cookie Dough as Blanche, and Matthew Martin as Sophia. The video above comes from last year's holiday show. This year's December run features just "The Christmas Episodes," and tonight's 7 p.m. opening night performance is a benefit for Toys for Tots and features a guest appearance by Fernando & Greg, formerly of 92.7, and now on 99.7.
Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Drag Golden Girls
Afternoon Palate Cleanser: A Trauma-tic Halloween
Here it is people: the Trauma episode we've been waiting for. On Monday night, the Halloween episode of the SF-based helicopter drama will be airing, and all the drag queens in town who responded to the drag queen casting call a couple months back will be watching the show at a viewing party hosted by Heklina at The Lookout (Noe & Market). We gather that Lady Bear had her own trailer and some actual lines, and maybe Heckles did too? The video above leaves a little to the imagination insofar as the drag queen/nightclub scene that was shot at Great American Music Hall, but hopefully that $3 million-per-episode budget is at least going to yield some good gay television.
Afternoon Palate Cleanser: "Do It In The Dirt" by Enrique
Anyone who was around the local music scene in the 90s may remember these guys. Enrique was an SF-based, ironical-satirical pop-rock band in the vein of the B-52s and the Scissor Sisters whose 1996 debut, Cut the Cheese, included this never quite classic track, "Do It in the Dirt." We've got to give them props for costumes and choreography, but the music? Let's just say they might have given the Scissor Sisters a run for their money if only they weren't so, like, on-purpose ironic-bad. Hat tip to Heklina for sharing.
Happy Birthday to Trannyshack Impresario Heklina
Today it's the birthday of Trannyshack founder and SF drag queen bee, Heklina. In her honor, here's a sweet video of a vintage T-shack duet she did with Kermit the Frog on "Rainbow Connection." The Gemini diva is currently appearing in some new episodes of the annual drag rendition of The Golden Girls at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory. Seats are going fast, and the show closes on July June 26th. Get tickets by emailing goldengirlssf@earthlink.net. (Hat tip to The semi-NSFW Sword.)
Photos: Trannyshack's Kiss-Off Party, the Finale
For those of you who eschewed the shoegazing/indie/whatever-thirtysomething-genre sounds emanating from last night's concert in Golden Gate Park, opting to check out Trannyshack's final party, you were richly rewarded with performances by Trannyshack legends Fauxnique; Kiddie; Scissor Sisters' Ana Matronic; Precious Moments (whose performance included real-life, strap-on...
SFist Tonight
FILM: Head over to the Castro to catch Jacob Cheung's A Battle of Wits (Muk gong), which is, according to IMDB, an action-drama-historical epic focusing on a "battle during China's Warring States period...which spanned from the 5th to the 3th centuries B.C. Based on a popular Japanese manga, which was in turn based a Japanese novel inspired by Warring States history in China." Part of the 26th San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.
Sydney Romp: Bevan Dufty Explains It All
Yesterday we mentioned the delightful work trip/vacation San Francisco supervisor Bevan Dufty and city treasurer Jose Cisneros took to Australia for Sydney's Gay Mardi Gras. Trannyshack founder Heklina was there, too. And many readers fretted about whether or not city tax dollars went to pay for this trip down under -- an excursion, it should be mentioned, that will reportedly bring in much-needed tourist dollars to SF. Anyway, according to Dufty's office:
SFist Tonight
-- Trannyshack's Siouxsie and the Banshees Night: Trannyshack icon and Scissor Sisters [NSFW] star Ana Matronic returns home to help Heklina host tonight's Siouxsie tribute. Also, we heard a rumor that Ana likes to watch live Broadway musical clips on YouTube. (i.e., str8-gay hipster suicide.) Is this true? We don't believe it. But if she does, she just landed herself a new stalker. Music starts at 10 p.m. and the show begins at midnight...
