We almost did until we read Eater's news that the Barleycorn will - get this - turn into another Irish pub called Duffy's Irish Pub. Ta-da. Word has it, straight from Luisa Hanson's mouth according to Eater, that the still-empty space at 1415 Larkin is set to open come February '08. Although a visable lack of renovation seems to suggest otherwise.

Restaurateur Luisa Hanson purchased the building last year and, to her credit, never promised to keep the beloved Barelycorn's doors open, even after a San Francisco Board of Supervisors attempt at preservation. "Angry blogs, forums, and even a YouTube video" followed her purchase of the holy hooch space.

Eater suggests that given the "current holy martyr status of the Barleycorn, Duffy's has pretty hard act to follow ... like watching the LBJ presidency, in pub form." So true. But if the prices are cheap and the seats prove irresistibly comfy, patrons tends to leave local politics and feuds outside the door. We shall see.

It seems that her flagship, whimsically branded Luisa's, was forced to shut its door. Nothing too unusual. Yet.

While initially chalked up to "planned renovations," Eater has the real, juicy, rat-infested scoop as it shutting its doors last Friday. it seems that Luisa's health inspection score totaled a limp 64. While nowhere near a Mrs.Lovett's Pie Shop incident, Luisa's score is, well, pretty down there. Far enough to merit a closure. Yikes. Maybe a visit from one brusque Gordon Ramsey is in order?

Oh, and that you're hearing, dear readers, is the din of unadulterated laughter from Barleycorn fans near and far.

But it was all to no avail.

In a city filled with mixed drinks and one-name clubs (where customers prefer appletinis and mojitos to brews), the Barylecorn was one of those lovely, cozy neighborhood bars that now disappear from the city. The bar was a throw back to an older era of San Francisco, one of Jack Kerouc, Herb Caen, and a time when the city was more blue-collar than hi-tech. Sadly, it will be missed.

Tonight, we'll hoist a few rounds in its honor while kicking it at Medjool's happy hour.

No, we're just joking. We've been there a few times since word came out that it was closing, and it didn't take us more than a few minutes to realize that, in fact, it was one of the nicest bars in which we've gotten smashed. Eulogies">
“Eulogies are most commonly designated for those who have passed, but really they are just words of praise, and in this case they are for the living,” explains musician Peter Walker. “The name, for me, represents the saying of the unsaid, the voicing of the unexpressed, to someone you care about.”

Though familiar with their latest release, entitled Eulogies, several of their songs they played were still unfamiliar. They were still good, just unfamiliar. The song that blew us away and made everything worth it was, "If I Knew You." Reynolds played a three-note, syncopated bass-line on the drums that created tension with it's repetitive nature. At the same time, Peter Walker carefully questions, "If I knew you, would you do the same to me? Should I say good-bye again? Should I stick around?" Three questions; that's all - yet it remained powerful and the highlight.

You'll have another opportunity to check Eulogies out when they play at Hotel Utah on November 21st with San Francisco native Chris Hanson. Working with only three musicians, Eulogies showed that they were an emotional powerhouse with their creative musical riffs and streamlined vocals. We definitely only have "words of praise" for them - a perfect eulogy - this time for the living.

SFist Tonight

-- "Given" (featuring artists Darwin Bell, Bret Hansen, and <a href="http://www.d...

Arts & Entertainment

Afrofunk Experience

Benefit

Castro Theatre

dj

DJs

Hanson

Harvey Milk

Market Streets

music

Music Festival

Roger Rabbit

sf

SF Weekly

the Castro

the city

Theatre

tonight

Weekly

Brock Keeling

-- "Given" (featuring artists Darwin Bell, Bret Hansen, and Danyol): Winner of SF Weekly’s "Best Polaroid Artist" award, Darwin Bell, makes clever, energetic pieces from the text he finds around the city, snapped up by his trusty Polaroid. The Examiner's in the middle of a week-long article series about San Francisco's tourism industry, where Examiner reporters try out various tourist services. Yesterday's Nellie Blys took cabs from various locations around the city, which was fine. But today! Today, they sent some poor reporters to stand on busy corners with maps in hand and see how long it took residents to ask them if they needed any help. How does this assess anything except nosiness?

Unsurprisingly, the crazies in the Haight immediately leapt to the aid of our reporters, and continued to ramble on and on and on about various aspects of San Francisco counterculture history -- whereas on 16th and Mission and Castro and Market, while some people looked over with mild concern, everyone left the reporters alone, forcing them to actually for help. No! Ask for help?

SFist likes to think that the Mission and Castro actually reflect a better attitude towards our tourists: you're not out of place, you belong here! -- and we're not going to bug you unless you actually need us to! It's actually kind of freaky when someone comes up to you and is like, "pardon me, miss, are you lost?" Um, where's our mace? If you want to know where Harvey Milk's house is: Just Ask!
