Lower Haight Laundromat Dubbed 'The Worst Place In The World'

Lower Haight Laundromat Dubbed 'The Worst Place In The World'

Hell hath no fury like a neighborhood blogger who can't find a functioning washing machine. Over at Haighteration, Andrew Dudley has got a bone to pick with the extremely sad Oak and Scott Laundry (991 Oak Street). He not only calls it the "worst place in the world," he goes on to shoot pictures of just about every machine, because there is something broken about pretty much all of them, including the change machines. more ›

Haight Street Wells Fargo Keeps Getting Attacked For Some Reason

Haight Street Wells Fargo Keeps Getting Attacked For Some Reason

How rude. For the third time in four months, the Wells Fargo ATM in the upper Haight (at Haight and Belvedere) was brutally attacked. The ATM was smashed with rocks and the windows were brutalized as well. "At 9 o’clock Sunday morning the screens were broken in with rocks that still lay on the sidewalk nearby, the touch pads covered in broken glass and rock dust," reports Uppercasing. "One of the screens was completely shattered, the other only cracked." Unlike the other times, however, the screen wasn't cracked (as seen in the image here.) But why is this Wells Fargo getting targeted? Could it be because of the bank's "reprehensible" handling of a mortgage that resulted in a major fine? Does it have anything to do with that Occupy business? Or is it because meth doesn't buy itself? Who knows. It's the Upper Haight. more ›

A major power outage hit San Francisco today affecting central San Francisco. An estimated 9,000 people are without juice. The outage occurred at around 9:40 am. more ›

Lower Haight Named 2011 Neighborhood Of The Year

Lower Haight Named 2011 Neighborhood Of The Year

Beating out popular arrondissements like The Mission and North Beach, the Lower Haight nabbed Curbed's tight 2011 San Francisco Neighborhood of the Year battle. And we can see why: Lower Haight retains its grittiness (visible section 8 housing!) and diversity (black and white people living together in not-perfect harmony!) while keeping its cool with a slew of fine (and not so fine) dining and retail establishments without turning into a boutique strip (see: Hayes or Valencia Streets). It's a great place to visit or live, even if it is on a hill. more ›

PG&E Outage Leaves Nearly 7,000 Haight and Western Addition Residents Without Power [Updated]

So says PG&E via their twitter feed just before 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. PG&E doesn't yet have an estimate for when the power will be back on, so if you were looking forward to heading home to the neighborhood, microwaving a hot pocket and firing up your TiVo, might we suggest alternate plans for the evening? No word yet on what is causing the outage, but we'll update when we know more. more ›

His Ashbury Heights home is now on the market, and you can buy it a little over a couple million, reports SF Weekly. more ›

Red Vic to Close This Month After 31 Years

After serving the stoned and extremely tripped out for three decades, Haight Street's Red Vic will officially close forever on July 25, the movie theater's 31st birthday. It was the kind of place people love, despite never going (like bookstores and record shops!), and you can probably trip pretty hard if you lick the right armrest in there. more ›

Red Vic Set to Close This Summer

Red Vic Set to Close This Summer

The Red Vic Movie House will be holding their final screening this summer unless some generous patron of neighborhood theaters steps in to save the venerable Upper Haight institution. KQED reports that recent fundraising attempts and even the strong local film community haven't done enough to keep the theater from going under. As Claudia Lehan, one of operators of the theater, puts it: "We're hoping for a miracle. But it's not looking good... We need George Lucas or Pixar or somebody really big to step in and we haven’t found them yet." more ›

Potential NIMBY Fight: Neighbors Not Keen On Lower Haight SRO Conversion

Potential NIMBY Fight: Neighbors Not Keen On Lower Haight SRO Conversion

Just off of the main drag in the Lower Haight, property owner David Nale's attempts to convert 15 rooms in three Fillmore street addresses he owns to an official Single Room Occupancy hotel has the neighbors getting defensive. Although the Examiner reports that Nale has already been renting out rooms in his three properties on a monthly basis for some four years now, the surrounding Lower Haighters don't want to see him get the permits he needs from the Planning Department to officially offer individual leases to tenants and make his property an SRO. more ›

This Friday: $60 Get-What-You-Get Tattoos in Lower Haight

As the Lower Haight Art Walk approaches (from 6pm to 9:30pm on Friday, folks), so does the annual tattoo roulette tradition at Idle Hand Tattoo Studio. See, each year they offer "$60 Get-What-You-Get Tattoos" night. It goes something like this: They have a large gumball machines filled with tattoo designs, you fork over a comparatively scant $60, turn the dial, and outcomes your new tattoo. Whether you like it or not. But, since the artists at Ide Hand are taop-drawer, you're bound to like it. more ›

Underground SF for Sale

Underground SF for Sale

The Lower Haight's only true nightclub, Underground SF, is up for sale. In fact, the entire building can be yours for around $1.5 million. According to Haighteration, the owner is "looking to part with either the property, the business, or both." So, if you want to buy a nightclub and, say, change its name to something that isn't mentally-challenged (there's no logical reason to use "SF" in the name of an establishment that's already in San Francisco), check out this listing. more ›

Tragic news: Gizmo, the chihuahua at the center of controversy surrounding a shooting at Fred's New Lite Supermarket at Haight and Masonic has been run over by a motor vehicle at the same intersection. The dog's argumentative owner is still nursing that gunshot wound it seems, but the animal's current caretaker is no stranger to controversy himself - Gizmo ran off while the caretaker was engaged in a scuffle that started a block away at Masonic and Page. Poor Gizmo. more ›

Haight Voters Rejected Sit/Lie: But Money and Votes from City's Richest Hoods Made for Successful Measure L

While Haight residents rejected Measure L -- election 2010's divisive sit/lie law that, after passing, will now keep city sidewalks sparkling clean, or whatever -- loads of cash and plenty of votes from San Francisco's richest neighborhoods helped edge the anti-street urchin law into victory. SF Appeal's Chris Roberts looked at precinct results, basically showing sit-lie snatched vote in rich person places -- i.e., Pacific Heights, Seacliff, and West of Twin Peaks. more ›
