Thanks to the help of Lyon-Martin Health Services' many loyal supporters, the clinic's board has decided to keep the clinic open for another month with the hope that they can raise an additional $200,000 in donations by the end of April. The board had initially set a goal of raising $700,000 by the end of March, but they decided that the $353,975 raised would keep Lyon-Martin afloat for another month.

The board elected Marj Plumb as its new president on Wednesday, who they describe as having "tremendous energy and a fresh sense of optimism.”

Plumb told the Examiner that although the clinic's still "on the edge of a cliff," she's confident that with the extended deadline they'll be able to raise more money and work with the city to remain open permanently. She vows to "help usher in a new era for Lyon-Martin—with major improvements in transparency, accountability, and financial stability.”

Starting next year, students in kindergarten through fifth grade will take one 45 minute class per year based on the GroundSpark curriculum. Fifth graders will read And Tango Makes Three, the true story of a pair of male penguins at the Central Park Zoo who successfully hatched an egg and raised a chick.

Teachers at the schools say there is a strong need for these classes, as they have heard students as young as five years old calling each other "fags." High school student Brian Harris said he went through torture because of his sexual orientation.

Many religious parents are angry that they won't be able to opt their kids out of the class, saying the gay lifestyle is against their religion. The district's legal counsel recommended against opting-out because the curriculum does not deal with health or sex education, which are topics that do require opt-out provisions. Opponents also question why the school system is signaling out one intolerance, and others argue that race and religion are already addressed in the school's regular classes. The school system will also reassess the tolerance curriculum after one year.

Prop. 8 Protesters Block Intersection at Van Ness & Grove

The intersection at "Grove and Van Ness [is] corked by 200 protesters, more coming from civic center," says Jim Herd who is live on the scene.
The intersection at "Grove and Van Ness [is] corked by 200 protesters, more coming from civic center," says Jim Herd who is live on the scene. Traffic is blocked as far as he can see. Cops are on the scene now. As we already mentioned, there is "lots of screaming at Civic Center plaza...[t]he goal, it seems, is to block all lanes of traffic." The protesters, according to a hurried KRON 4 reporter, plan top stay until they are arrested. (For more updates on what's going on at Civic Center, go here.)

The California State Supreme Court, for those of you just tuning in, ruled to uphold prop 8.

But! Please remember that this is just one day, that same-sex marriage will be legal soon.

Update: 10:30 a.m.: According to SFist commenter FYoCouch247, "Police deploying behind City Hall. Marchers have locked arms and will likely get arrested at some point. Avoid MUNI lines 47, 49 and anything on Grove. Hell, avoid all of the Civic Center if possible. McAllister is traffic cop moderated."

Update 10:45 a.m.: According to stop8dotorg, "Crowd very sad. Everyone in should attend tonight's rallies, happening all over country." We agree.

Update: 11:40 a.m.: stop8dotorg also says "Arrests starting in 10 mins say cops. Rumor is that people will be taken to Bryant St jail." Protesters are "singing" that they will not be moved. Oh, and check out SFAppeal's live blogging on today's ruling too.

Update 12:05 p.m.: stop8dotorg says "No arrests yet. Everyone just standing around, not getting gay married." Crowd chanting, ""repeal prop8! We will not be moved!," according to JustMarriedUs.

Prop 8 Upheld, Rules California State Supreme Court

As anticipated, the California State Supreme Court ruled to uphold prop 8, the same-sex marriage ban.
As anticipated, the California State Supreme Court ruled to uphold prop 8, the same-sex marriage ban. That means that gay marriage in the state of California is still considered illegal, effectively stripping away civil rights of many GLBT Californians. The State Supreme court ruled that prop 8 is legal in a 6-1 ruling with justice Marino being the sole holdout.

Alas.

The 18,000 same-sex marriages, however, will remain legal, effectively creating two classes of people in the gay community, those who are married and those who are not. Vile.

We're still going strong on this week's ticket giveaways for the Frameline GLBT film fest!

Today's giveaway is for tickets to a screening for you and a friend on Saturday night (not Friday!): it's the new RuPaul movie STARRBOOTY! And this screening is sold out, so if you want to guarantee yourself seats, you gotta go through us.

Starrbooty's a modern-day blaxxploitation comedy, with RuPaul reprising the role that made her famous, supermodel/crimefighter Starrbooty, forced to go deep undercover as a prostitute (read: raunchy sex scenes) to save her niece. There's porn stars, drag queens, and New York divas in the movie, and Frameline calls it "part Russ Meyer, part John Waters, and part Naked Gun."

Check out the new song RuPaul's performing in that YouTube preview clip, and then enter to win tickets! 8:30 p.m. at the Castro, Saturday the 23rd. We'll announce winners by Friday morning.

Thanks for asking, Lilly -- though we should clarify that, like all other press outlets, SFist does not guarantee reviews in exchange for passes, nor are we expecting reviews from the readers who win free passes for individual screenings.

So this is the first movie we've seen at the Victoria Theater. 1) They have excellent popcorn -- just the right amount of salt, butter, and crunch, and 2) we really like the slide-y seats they have in the auditorium!

Eternal Summer (Sheng xia guang nian) is a moodily-shot, melodramatic movie about an equilateral love triangle between three young adults in the summer before college in the oceanside city of Hualien, Taiwan, as Jonathan struggles to come to terms with his feelings for his best friend, Shane, through the intermediary of new girl Carrie.

This being the Frameline movie festival, we suppose we weren't too surprised to see the direction the movie goes (in a tasteful and mildly-graphic scene), but we found it interesting that the Chinese words for "gay" and "love" are never used in the movie, the script going with the more ambiguous terms "good friends" and "like" instead. And there's a little more heterosex than you'd expect for a gay-themed movie too. Maybe that's the only way they could get the movie made?

The tension this creates in the plot results in a movie that doesn't really make a whole lot of sense in places, but the emotion in the scenes is palpable -- we heard some sniffling in the audience during the final climactic scenes, and through the quite ambiguous ending as the credits rolled.

Eternal Summer screens again on Wednesday at the Parkway Theater in Oakland.
Eternal Summer

Frameline: Win Tickets To El Calentito!

It's true!

El Calentito is a nostalgic coming of age comedy about punk and fascism in 80’s Madrid. Calentito is what early Almodóvar would be if it were tidier (nostalgia does tidy) and watched girls kissing instead of boys. The themes are all there: oppressive Catholicism, tyrannical mothers, vice as choice, subversive sexuality. And virginity! Don’t forget the virgins.

Starting today, The Frameline LGBT Film Festival will be rolling out its rainbow carpet at the Castro and the lineup of guests is glittery. Besides appearances by RuPaul (for Starrbooty), Alan Cumming (for his directorial debut Suffering Man’s Charity) and Alexis Arquette (for Alexis Arquette: She’s our Brother), the fest is again offering a super smart lineup of LGBT themed fare with a special mention of the fest’s foreign language section.

Opening night (tonight!) is the French film The Witnesses. Set over a year between 1984-85, this film follows a group of friends and lovers during the AIDS discovery period. An ensemble piece, André Téchiné intelligently weaves a plot that implicates parental and sexual relationships while getting at the question: “what can we really know about each other?” Subtle in its ways, Witnesses lets you be the witness to its eventual quandary. And if you’re not into it, at the very least it’s artful.

Nina’s Heavenly Delights (preview here) is a sort of Indian/Lesbian/Scottish Like Water For Chocolate (director Pratibha Parmar attending). It’s mainstream and a little overly sweetened, but it’s full of really pretty people and positively raises the question of compromise: everyone is bi-cultural, everyone is hiding a decision and everyone would be so much happier if they just spit it out already! (Audience included.)
