DIY, fashion, cheese, and pride -- who could ask for anything more?! Here are just a few events going on this weekend:

Maker Faire: The annual, family-friendly DIY fest, celebrating the arts, crafts, engineering, science projects, and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset is happening all weekend down at the San Mateo Expo Center. Get an early taste of Burning Man! Avoid the line and get your tickets ahead of time at these locations, which will also save you $5 off of regular admission. Or, for $35, you can get a year's subscription to Make Magazine, along with an adult day pass. Saturday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Union Design Festival Sunday in Hayes Valley is a day full of fashion. There will be 130 participating designers selling a variety of clothing, accessories, textiles, and paper goods, along with artists and musicians performing in Patricia's Green Park. Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Octavia and Hayes Streets, free.

Tour de Fromage: That's right, it's a bike ride for cheese lovers! "Two-wheeled cheese appreciators" will visit some of the city's top fromage specialists, and they'll finish up with a cheese-sharing picnic at a nearby park. Don't forget to bring cash for those cheese purchases. Saturday from 11a.m. to 3 p.m., meet at the Panhandle Statue, Fell and Baker.

San Francisco LGBT Community Center's Pride Month Kick-Off Party: There will be live entertainment, an awards ceremony, and information about city and neighborhood offerings. Food and refreshments will be served. Saturday from Noon to 4 p.m., free.

Parents of students in the Alameda School District are split down the middle regarding the district's decision to proceed with a new set of classes aimed at curbing anti-gay bullying. Starting next year, students in kindergarten through fifth grade will take one 45 minute class per year based on the GroundSpark curriculum. Fifth graders will read And Tango Makes Three, the true story of a pair of male penguins at the Central Park Zoo who successfully hatched an egg and raised a chick.

Teachers at the schools say there is a strong need for these classes, as they have heard students as young as five years old calling each other "fags." High school student Brian Harris said he went through torture because of his sexual orientation.

Many religious parents are angry that they won't be able to opt their kids out of the class, saying the gay lifestyle is against their religion. The district's legal counsel recommended against opting-out because the curriculum does not deal with health or sex education, which are topics that do require opt-out provisions. Opponents also question why the school system is signaling out one intolerance, and others argue that race and religion are already addressed in the school's regular classes. The school system will also reassess the tolerance curriculum after one year.

The intersection at "Grove and Van Ness [is] corked by 200 protesters, more coming from civic center," says Jim Herd who is live on the scene. Traffic is blocked as far as he can see. Cops are on the scene now. As we already mentioned, there is "lots of screaming at Civic Center plaza...[t]he goal, it seems, is to block all lanes of traffic." The protesters, according to a hurried KRON 4 reporter, plan top stay until they are arrested. (For more updates on what's going on at Civic Center, go here.)

The California State Supreme Court, for those of you just tuning in, ruled to uphold prop 8.

But! Please remember that this is just one day, that same-sex marriage will be legal soon.

Update: 10:30 a.m.: According to SFist commenter FYoCouch247, "Police deploying behind City Hall. Marchers have locked arms and will likely get arrested at some point. Avoid MUNI lines 47, 49 and anything on Grove. Hell, avoid all of the Civic Center if possible. McAllister is traffic cop moderated."

Update 10:45 a.m.: According to stop8dotorg, "Crowd very sad. Everyone in should attend tonight's rallies, happening all over country." We agree.

Update: 11:40 a.m.: stop8dotorg also says "Arrests starting in 10 mins say cops. Rumor is that people will be taken to Bryant St jail." Protesters are "singing" that they will not be moved. Oh, and check out SFAppeal's live blogging on today's ruling too.

Update 12:05 p.m.: stop8dotorg says "No arrests yet. Everyone just standing around, not getting gay married." Crowd chanting, ""repeal prop8! We will not be moved!," according to JustMarriedUs.

As anticipated, the California State Supreme Court ruled to uphold prop 8, the same-sex marriage ban. That means that gay marriage in the state of California is still considered illegal, effectively stripping away civil rights of many GLBT Californians. The State Supreme court ruled that prop 8 is legal in a 6-1 ruling with justice Marino being the sole holdout.

Alas.

The 18,000 same-sex marriages, however, will remain legal, effectively creating two classes of people in the gay community, those who are married and those who are not. Vile.

Canteen asks accomplished writers to reveal their creative process, and they pair that insight with the best new work in fiction, poetry, art, and photography—all designed to look more like a fine art book than a dusty journal.

Aside from Juanita More's party at Bambuddha Lounge, the Frameline Film Fest, KRON4 fag hag Jan Wahl's coverage of the parade, the meth cloud that will hover above Beck's Motor Lodge, and the bittersweet tang of buried shame rising to the surface, we can't say we're looking forward to this month's melee. We're just that cool. Or bitter. Or both.

El Calentito is a nostalgic coming of age comedy about punk and fascism in 80’s Madrid. Calentito is what early Almodóvar would be if it were tidier (nostalgia does tidy) and watched girls kissing instead of boys. The themes are all there: oppressive Catholicism, tyrannical mothers, vice as choice, subversive sexuality. And virginity! Don’t forget the virgins.
