Weekend Events

DIY, fashion, cheese, and pride -- who could ask for anything more?! Here are just a few events going on this weekend:

Alameda Schools Approve Curriculum on Gay Tolerance

Parents of students in the Alameda School District are split down the middle regarding the district's decision to proceed with a new set of classes aimed at curbing anti-gay bullying. Starting next year, students in kindergarten through fifth grade will take one 45 minute class per year based on the GroundSpark curriculum. Fifth graders will read And Tango Makes Three, the true story of a pair of male penguins at the Central Park Zoo who successfully hatched an egg and raised a chick.

Prop. 8 Protesters Block Intersection at Van Ness & Grove

The intersection at "Grove and Van Ness [is] corked by 200 protesters, more coming from civic center," says Jim Herd who is live on the scene. Traffic is blocked as far as he can see. Cops are on the scene now. As we already mentioned, there is "lots of screaming at Civic Center plaza...[t]he goal, it seems, is to block all lanes of traffic." The protesters, according to a hurried KRON 4 reporter, plan top stay until they are arrested. (For more updates on what's going on at Civic Center, go here.)

Prop 8 Upheld, Rules California State Supreme Court

As anticipated, the California State Supreme Court ruled to uphold prop 8, the same-sex marriage ban. That means that gay marriage in the state of California is still considered illegal, effectively stripping away civil rights of many GLBT Californians. The State Supreme court ruled that prop 8 is legal in a 6-1 ruling with justice Marino being the sole holdout.

SFist Tonight

LIT: Canteen magazine, which was edited and launched in San Francisco, is celebrating their fourth issue and the new semester of canTeen, their creative writing tutoring and publishing program in Harlem. Canteen asks accomplished writers to reveal their creative process, and they pair that insight with the best new work in fiction, poetry, art, and photography—all designed to look more like a fine art book than a dusty journal.

Aside from Juanita More's party at Bambuddha Lounge, the Frameline Film Fest, KRON4 fag hag Jan Wahl's coverage of the parade, the meth cloud that will hover above Beck's Motor Lodge, and the bittersweet tang of buried shame rising to the surface, we can't say we're looking forward to this month's melee. We're just that cool. Or bitter. Or both.

Brian Eno's visual imagescape 77 million paintings premiers tonight at Yerba Buena with a 45-foot wall of projections of changing images set to an evolving soundscape. Tickets are $25 unless you're a student or senior. No word on whether Eno will be there...but it seems worth it all the same. 701 Mission St., SF.

We're still going strong on this week's ticket giveaways for the Frameline GLBT film fest!

There's no better way to celebrate the Frameline GLBT film fest than by entering to win free tickets for you and a friend to a screening tomorrow night!

We know commenter Lilly is dying to know what we thought of , the Taiwanese movie we were watching this afternoon in the Frameline GLBT film festival! Thanks for asking, Lilly -- though we should clarify that, like all other press outlets, SFist does not guarantee reviews in exchange for passes, nor are we expecting reviews from the readers who win free passes for individual screenings.

It's true! We're doing ticket giveaways through the entire Frameline GLBT film fest this and next week! Enter and win!

Starting today, The Frameline LGBT Film Festival will be rolling out its rainbow carpet at the Castro and the lineup of guests is glittery. Besides appearances by RuPaul (for ), the fest is again offering a super smart lineup of LGBT themed fare with a special mention of the fest’s foreign language section.

Look! Just like we promised -- to celebrate the Frameline GLBT film fest, we're giving away free passes throughout the festival (running June 14-24).

Timed to hit Gay Pride Month, it's San Francisco's favorite GLBT film fest Frameline!

Hey, have you seen that giant, ugly monstrosity of a wall on Haight Street between Laguna and Buchanan? That's the old UC Extension campus. Yep, the one that's been closed since 2003 and has been fallow since. Why are we bringing this thing up now, ruining your beautiful June morning with mental images of a dilapidated, graffiti-scarred bit of lovely urban blight right in the middle of the city?

accomplished something momentous Friday night; not only did he manage to convince us to travel down to City Hall for the first time since we spent four hours trying to register a business name (all the good ones are taken by the way), he brought back former Supervisor and slain gay rights legend, Harvey Milk as well.

Blog nerds better go buy the kids at Technorati a drink or two tonight, as they're celebrating the rollout of their new look and features at the House of Shields (which has wifi!). Tomorrow night is the SFlickr Drinkup at the BigFoot Lodge for those of you who just can't wait another two weeks until the next 'official' meetup.

We're awash in trannies! Frameline, San Francisco's annual GLBT film festival, has decided to highlight the "T" portion of the acronym this year, but there's still plenty of G, L, B, and P on the incredibly massive schedule. With 115 screenings, yikes that's a lot, between June 16 and 26, there's sure to be something for everyone. Including heterosexuals. If there really even is such a thing. Anyway, trust SFist to scurry about like a fey little fieldmouse, bringing you reviews and recaps of selected screenings throughout the fest. Programs we're covering include a slew of cartoons, a collection of Peaches Christ's best work, and yet another documentary about Tammy Faye, at which Lady Faye herself will be present.
