Apple, Google, Yahoo, Genentech in Antitrust Probe Re: Hiring Practices

Some of the largest employers in the Bay Area are being investigated by the Department of Justice to determine if they have been in cahoots not to recruit or hire away each others' key employees. The story first broke on The Deal, and now appears on The Washington Post. Sources for the Post report that the probe is industry-wide, and asserts that "by agreeing not to hire away top talent, the companies could be stifling competition and trying to maintain their market power unfairly." more ›

Genentech Goes Roche?

South San Francisco biotechnology company Genentech, makers of some of the world's most boring prescription drugs ever (e.g., supplementary growth hormones Protropin and Nutropin, clot-busting pill TNKase, non-Hodgkins lymphomas treatment Rituxan, and zzzzzzz) might be bought out by Swiss drug company Roche. The European pill-pushers are offering the Bay Area company a whopping $43.7 billion. Genentech, though, is expected "to refuse the bid and strive to remain independent." Or, most likely, turn this offer down and strive to get a higher one. more ›
