Well what do you know! Tinder's CEO Sean Rad, who famously did not know what the word sodomy referred to, isn't a total idiot! In fact, he and his company have made a positive effort to embrace and protect, in particular, trans people who are using Tinder to get out there, get laid, and not be attacked online by strangers for their gender identity/expression. That's to say that Tinder has broken the gender binary and is now offering a spectrum of ways to identify, almost 40 options by one count, including non-binary and two-spirit, a term used by indigenous people. Some heads will explode at this number, and that's just wonderful.

Where Tinder ran into particular difficulty in the past: In addition to your usual online harassment, users have reported other users who appear to be transgender. Reported enough times, and profiles can be frozen, which many trans users report was their experience.

According to the New York Times, who covered the change, Tinder realized the issue about seven months go and began working with trans activists and leaders to arrive at solutions.

“Dating for trans people is generally safer via an app like Tinder,” trans activist Andrea James, who worked with Tinder on the change, told the Times. “I find it much safer to make connections online versus having a stranger approach me in a cafe or bar.”

Facebook opened itself up to the spectrum of genders by which people identify themselves in 2014, allowing for a "write-in" option as well as providing options for neutral or preferred pronouns. Now Tinder is apparently on board, which would only make sense as it uses your Facebook profile. But I'm left with one question for Tinder after this change. How does one identify one's interest in a particularly gender or genders on the app now? Has that changed, or will it?

“Part of the problem is a lot of tech platforms try to stay out of complex issues because they don’t want to alienate any of their users,” Tinder's CEO told the Times. “For us it’s very important to come in and particularly now given what’s going on in the world, with all the division in the world, it’s particularly important to step in and make a statement of inclusivity and acceptance.”

Did you enjoy a nice Lady Day? That symbolic event was celebrated at Google at the end of last week in a concerted response to the sexist comments of an unnamed shareholder in Google's parent company, Alphabet. You see, at an Alphabet shareholders meeting, this (male) shareholder addressed Alphabet's CFO, Ruth Porat, as the "lady CFO," a slip written about here by CNN that would seem to belie the shareholder's undue emphasis on Porat's gender.

The remark was widely mocked on Twitter, and minutes later, Sonen Capital's Danielle Ginach called the dude out. "I am sorry to put another shareholder on the spot," she said according to USA Today, "But Ms. Porat is the CFO, not the lady CFO."

Later, Ginach would add to the news outlet that "When it was my turn to speak, there was no way I was not going to acknowledge it. She has been a tremendous leader for Google, but her leadership aside, that was an unbelievably sexist comment. Imagine addressing the 'man CFO.' What is the relationship between gender and CFO?"

Hence, some days later, the decision from an internal group at Google to deride the shareholder's comment with a dedicated "Lady Day." On Thursday (and also Friday) women added "Lady" to their job title in email signatures and the company directory. The following GIF made it into an internal landing page, apparently.

via GIPHY

As Meg Mason, "Lady Partner Operations Manager, Shopping," told USA Today, "I wanted to do something fun and 'googley' that allowed us all to stand together, and to show that someone's gender is entirely irrelevant to how they do their job."

Also, and I think confusingly, men at Google like Bob Jung appeared to have added gender to their title. But instead of adding "Male," they, and he, also added Lady their titles to become "Lady Director, Software Engineering."

While this "tongue-in-cheek" protest might call attention to the disrespect and bias inherent in considering, first and foremost, a person's gender in the workplace, I feel compelled to add that it does awfully little to address the actual gender gap at Google! That was, at least as of 2015, pretty bad at about 70 percent male according to publicly reported numbers. To get "more granular," the technical side of Google was even more male-dominated, with 82 percent of those employees male. Last, and most pertinent to the discussion of Alphabet's CFO, Google's leadership was 78 percent male and just 22 percent female at the time of that diversity overview. Anyway, what I mean to say is, with numbers like that, it might be more illustrative for all the men at google to add "Male" to their title than for everyone to add "Lady," no?

Women are paid less than men. This discrimination manifests across numerous professions, even when factors like experience and education are taken into account. However, a new study by Glassdoor confirms what many in San Francisco may have long suspected — the position of computer programmer has the highest gender pay gap of any occupation in the country.

The study, published yesterday, is titled "Demystifying the Gender Pay Gap," and its authors note that "[today], the gender pay gap remains around 75-80 cents per dollar on average, and hasn’t budged in a decade."

That number is an average across professions, however, and things get decidedly worse when a closer look is taken at programming.

"The occupation with the highest gender pay gap was computer programmer, with a gap of 28.3 percent," the study finds. "This amounts to women earning on average 72 cents per dollar earned by men, after controlling for all differences between jobs, companies and workers—a gap that is roughly five times larger than the U.S. average 'adjusted' gender pay gap of 5.4 percent."

Seventy-two cents on the dollar.

Interestingly, this wage discrimination is not as pronounced in the tech industry as a whole. Don't get us wrong, it still exits in tech, however "the overall information technology (or 'tech') industry is close to the U.S. average and falls in the middle of the pack among industries." It appears the worst of the worst is specifically reserved for programming.

And while this report might elicit a "no duh" response from some, seeing the numbers laid bare is still pretty shocking. Fingers crossed someone in tech can figure out a way to disrupt the pay gap, but we're not holding our breath.

In a release statement calling for the "most comprehensive law in the nation," Supervisor David Campos is leading the charge to "increase bathroom access for transgender people, women, frail seniors, and people with disabilities," by declaring that all single-person restrooms in San Francisco businesses and city buildings be designated as "All Gender."

The move represents contemporary thinking on gender pluralism and inclusivity, and with plenty of support, it might not be long before we're all using all gender bathrooms.

“My reaction when I first learned about this issue," Campos tells the Chronicle, "was '‘Why aren’t we doing this already?'” Even City Hall is dotted with single-person single-gender restrooms, and that would change, though multi-stall restrooms would still carry gender designations.

Washington, DC has had such a law since 2006, and now Berkeley, West Hollywood, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Austin have followed suit. As a mechanism for ensuring that businesses are in compliance, the public would be encouraged to notify the Human Rights Commission of violations with the Department of Building Inspection able to levy fines.

The preferred terminology "All Gender" as opposed to the popular "Gender Neutral" distinction "recognizes the diversity of gender rather than to neutralize[s] it" according to Sasha Buchert, a staff attorney at the Transgender Law Center.

The Golden Gate Restaurant Association is in support, it says. “A lot of restaurants are going the route of unisex restrooms,” according to executive director Gwyneth Borden. “It’s actually a lot easier. How many times have you seen a line at the ladies’ room and not the men’s room?”

“For too long in K through 12, we have asked every single student to conform to one or the other binary,” Samuel Bass, the principal of San Francisco's Miraloma Elementary School, told the New York Times of the school's move to All Gender bathrooms. “We had several students on the gender spectrum, and decided it was the right thing to do. It doesn’t affect other students. Children don’t know gender norms until we as adults teach them. With any change, parents have questions. When they realize that it’s just like it is at home, it’s not a big deal.”

Supervisor Mark Farrell, a co-sponsor of the legislation, adds that “Equal rights and equal access should apply to restrooms just like everywhere else.”

Uberman Training Society MANSA: 'Sure, We're A Little Like Fight Club'

"MANSA is like the high IQ society MENSA, but for 'Man IQ.'"

SF News

clubs

gender

mansa

Caleb Pershan

"Let's face it, there are a lot of man-babies and Peter Pans running around out there," says Bryce Anderson, who has founded a small, unsettling, SF-based society for the preservation of masculine stereotypes. But hey, he does have a top-notch name for it.

MANSA, as Anderson explains laboriously in his video, is like the high IQ society MENSA, but for "Man IQ."

Over 470 deeply unsure males are enrolled in MANSA's Uberman Challenge, with 164 in the San Francisco Chapter who attend man skills events in the city. Lessons for the group of "warriors" include how to give a firm, confident handshake, how to undo a "girl's" bra with one hand (they practice on each other, the dears), and how to "Impress The Ladies By Learning How to Build A Bad-Ass Campsite."

Anderson's video is sort of troubling, though, because MANSA ends up sounding like one of many groups for frightened men in a changing society that's fixated on firearms (guns are a top "Man Skill"). But maybe it's harmless fiction-worship: Anderson says MANSA is all about finding your inner Tyler Durden. Not to worry, they aren't a paramilitary group like Fight Club. Otherwise? Yeah, they're a lot like Fight Club!

Quote du Jour: the Other BART Bathroom

A constituent asked BART staff a question about the potties during a public meeting yesterday.
