Gallery of Street Name Typos

             + 1 more

Polk Sheet shared a funny photo the other day of this curb at "Sacarmneto" and Hyde sporting a comically misspelled street name. This led us to discover a delightful gallery by "throgers" (via a Creative Commons license) showcasing nearly one-hundred photos of goofy misspelled street names all over San Francisco. How does that happen, we wonder? more ›

Modern Vermeers: Photo Exhibit

Modern Vermeers: Photo Exhibit

A particular highlight of this week's First Thursday open galleries at 49 Geary (and elsewhere around town) is a show of exquisite, large-scale color photo portraits by Richard Learoyd at the Fraenkel Gallery. Each unique direct-positive image is made with a giant camera that is basically two rooms with a lens mounted between them. This modern day Vermeer has had one of his portraits attracting unprecedented buzz at SFMOMA over the past few months, and now here's a chance to bask in the magnificent glow of dozens more of his masterworks, even for those of us who can't afford the tens of thousands of dollars to take one home. more ›

Photographer Scott Owens captured some lovely photos of Monique Jenkinson's/Fauxnique's performance at City Hall on Friday as part of Dancers' Group's Rotunda Dance Series. The performance, entitled Beautility, was a "site-specific, durational solo playing with layers of symbolism that embellish San Francisco's City Hall's ornately beautiful rotunda." Jenkinson's breathtaking costume was designed by the singular talent, "Mr. David." more ›

Outside Lands Day 3: The Last and Final Gallery

             + 15 more

As many of you probably know, the weather took a turn for the San Franciscan on Sunday and Golden Gate Park remained socked in all day. But that did not deter fans from coming out to Outside Lands to see their beloved M.I.A. (who made a single shout-out to the Beasties and sang a two-song cover medley, and also had two slightly creepy twin redhead backup dancers), Modest Mouse and of course, Tenacious D. Whatever you may say about them not being real musicians, they certainly are entertainers, and from the flat screen TVs in the Winehaven wine tent their set sure did look fun. Band of Horses' late set in Lindley Meadow was mesmerizing and mellow, and Calexico also did a bang-up job with six or seven horns on stage to boot. But the best performance of the day, if we had to choose, came from recently re-issued soul singer Bettye LaVette, who sang a doozy of a number called "Let Me Down Easy" and also covered Sam Cooke's "Change is Gonna Come," which she sang at President Obama's inauguration. See some pics here, also including Slug of Atmosphere fame, the hippie-hunky Avett Brothers, the "brothers" Gene and Dean Ween who constitute Ween, and those joyful and boisterous kids from Brooklyn, Matt & Kim. more ›

Photos: Tonight's Prop 8 Rally

             + 15 more

There was a huge turnout tonight at both the City Hall and Yerba Buena rallies, and then a large chunk of people branched off toward the Castro. Stop8.org's Twitter feed informs us that a guy from the ACLU gave a rousing speech at City Hall about never giving up, and Mark Leno inspired the crowd about equal protection at Yerba Buena. Then a flatbed truck turned up with a speaker who got everyone riled up in party mode during the march. more ›
