Laughing Squid broke the news that game designer Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons (1974)/co-founder of Tactical Studies Rules, died today at the ripe age of 69. According to LS, his death was announced on the Troll Lord Games forum. Steve (AKA the High Lord, Coburg the Undying, he who sits on the elephants back of the Castle and Crusade Society) had this to say on the forums:
Gary Gygax, Co-Creator of Dungeons & Dragons, Dies
'Wine By The Bay' Event: Good Wines, Great Cause, Old Friends
This Saturday at the San Francisco Embarcadero Hyatt Regency from noon-4 p.m., you can join KGO Radio and the Mendocino Wine Growers Foundation in celebration of the wines and other good stuff from Mendocino County. The event, called "Wine By The Bay 2007,", is $35 if you buy your ticket now; it'll be ten buck more ($45) at the door. What's exciting to us is that Friend of SFist, Destination Dinners' Lisa Diamond, is scheduled to be interviewed by KGO's Gene Burns during the event for his "Dining Around" program.
SFist Watches: The Bridge
We've talked about the controversial documentary The Bridge here on SFist before, but for those who couldn't bring themselves to see the film in a theater, you've got your chance for a cozy TV viewing on IFC tonight at 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. At least at home you can cover your eyes and scream "OH MY GOD!" without bothering a theater full of people.
Free Movie At Dolores Park About Coffee/Fair Trade
Friend of SFist James Guzzi, who is with TransFair USA, alerted us to a cool event his group is holding tomorrow night in Dolores Park. Black Gold is about coffee farmers in Ethiopia and helps to hammer home the importance of using fair trade products. Show up at 7:30 p.m. to sample some goodies (chocolate, coffee); the movie starts at 8:30 p.m.
Every Day is Right-Handers' Day
Are you ready? Today's the big day! International Left Handers' Day! Wheeeeee! How do you plan to celebrate? Is your costume ready for the parade? Are your out-of-town friends all coming? We heard that Bevan Dufty is going to ask every business in the city to file for bankruptcy in order to prevent rowdiness.
Yelp! Guns Drawn In Front Of Yelp's Offices?
Friend of SFist Jeremy Stoppelman, Yelp's CEO and co-founder, just shot us this note: "Guns drawn in front of Yelp office..."
Did You Feel The Earthquake?
No, you didn't dream it! There was a 4.2 temblor this morning at around 4:42 a.m., centered two miles east of Oakland on the dreaded Hayward Fault. It knocked out power in Oakland (poor PG&E, it's been a busy week), and broke the windows of the Safeway on Shattuck and Rose in Berkeley, and at a doughnut shop on College and Ashby (but with no interruption in donut service, they added) -- but in SF, we didn't notice anything other than some shaking, and in San Jose, they didn't feel anything at all.
Ritual Roasters Event For Bikes To Rwanda This Saturday
Ritual Coffee Roasters' two locations are only about three miles apart. Not so bad on a bike, right? Well, what if you're biking with 130 pounds of coffee? Yeah, a little tougher. This Saturday, popular cafe Ritual Roasters, in conjunction with Bikes to Rwanda, is having a wacky, multi-tiered charity event that involves bike-race betting, film-watching, a raffle, and the consumption of both of our favorite beverages: booze and coffee.
Pretty Home Run Derby Pictures
Friend of SFist David Lilienstein was out in the Cove yesterday and took this photo of one of the denizens. If you want to read what it was like out there, check out Jim Caple's excellent write up in ESPN.com and if you want to see more photos, you can see the Flickr stream here and SFGate's phenomenal pictures here.
Like The Surface Of The Sun
Friend of SFist, Burritophile's Cate, alerted us to this amusing error over on sfgate's weather page.
No Danger-Flags Here, No Sirree
Friend-of-SFist Matt V passes along these photos of a verrrrry safe looking taxi, sighted outside a Starbucks in the Abandoned Warehouse district of the Mission. "You choose what you pay," it says on the side, which is exactly how Lucifer would phrase an offer.
When The Lights Go Down In The City
We've got two giveaways this week, and the first one is particularly near and dear to our heart. We're halfway through 2007 and already thinking about what might make our annual list of top 10 records. One album that's sure to make the cut is Menomena's Friend and Foe. The band is back to play live this Friday night at the Independent with opener All Smiles, a.k.a. Jim Fairchild. We've known Jim since way back in the day when he was playing guitar in Grandaddy and we worked at their label V2 Records in NYC. It's great to see him stepping out on his own. We're giving away a prize pack with tickets to the show, a copy of Menomena's Friend and Foe, plus an All Smiles 7-inch record and a copy of the new CD Ten Readings Of A Warning. (Contest ends at noon Friday, winner will be notified via email.)
Epicugenerous
Tuesday was National Hunger Awareness Day, and we're late mentioning it. We're kinda dragging our feet when it comes to this serious, depressing stuff. Turns out that a bunch of kids, when they are not fed through the school system (minus the fresh fruits) during summer break, go hungry. In California. Now.
The Finest Kind of Writer
Friend of SFist Charlie Anders reminds us that her nifty and unusual spoken-word group, Writers With Drinks, will be experiencing yet another stupendous explosion of literary greatness this Saturday, the 9th, from 7:30 to 9:30 at The Make Out Room. Presenters include:
Oh No Ed Jew! "I, we Have a Number of Attorneys ... and so Forth."
Ed Jew alert! Friend-of-SFist Dan N. (or, if you like, D. Noyes) alerts us to a brand spanking new Ed Jew interview on the I-Team's website! Oh, faithful I-Team. Here's the juicy bit:
The Doubtful Guests Depart
General consensus is that the whales have disappeared off into the ocean as mysteriously as they came. Possible next stop on their itinerary: the feeding areas near the Farallon Islands. We'll keep you posted if they turn up again.
First Chron Layoff Announced
And the layoffs begin -- a source tells us the first person to be let go from the Chronicle in their 25% reduction-in-staff campaign is managing editor Robert "Rosey" Rosenthal. We got the news confirmed by Friend of SFist and Chron Blogging/Interactive Editor Eve Batey, who says:
A Holiday Second only to Boonta Eve in its Extravagance
Happy Birthday local auteur! It's year 63 for George Lucas, posing at right with ... what the hell? Is that supposed to be Yoda? Eesh. Anyway, as you can imagine, George's campus in the presidio, aka Naboo, is in a festive uproar today, with giant lumbering beasts, cheering crowds, ducks, and the handing off of a big swirly gazing ball to a drooling bipedal frog. We've watched George's career with interest, and wish him hundreds of more years of success.
Dan Noyes: Original Gangsta
We found this vintage clip of our favorite hellraiser/Facebook Friend, Dan Noyes, dropping the F-bomb. We're not sure why the dude holding the yellow sign in the background thinks KGO is "bad news," but the rest of the video is priceless.
When The Lights Go Down In The City
Did you get your tickets to see Menomena on Friday night at Cafe Du Nord? Hopefully you did, because the show is sold out. As we've said before, this record is already on our top 10 of '07, so if you haven't checked the band out yet - what are you waiting for? OK maybe you're broke or you've fallen and you can't get to Amoeba, so we're going to hook one of you up with their amazing album Friend and Foe plus a really nice poster courtesy of their label Barsuk. Since we're currently locked out of our fancy contesting tool, only you close readers will be rewarded with a chance to win: just email yours truly for your chance.
SFist's I-Team Report on City Proclamations
After news came out that Gavin gave a proclamation for a gay porn studio, it was soon revealed that apparently nobody was paying attention to the city's process of issuing proclamations. So SFist did some digging around and discovered that in the past few years, we have issued these proclamations:
Inside the Armory
On February 23rd, Kink.com opened the doors to the armory and let five lucky winners of the Kink.com golden ticket to see the wonders what the armory had in store. Let's just say this: "Oopma Loompas in bondage gear."
No, they opened the doors to everyone and anyone who wanted to check things out. So Friend of SFist, Nathan, sent along his photos for us to post.
Tales of Parking Woes
Friend of SFist Peggy saw our story on bad people parking in bad ways and sent an e-mail telling us of her tales of parking woes. She also sent to us the e-mail exchange she had with the Taraval Station Police Department about what to do about her problems.
SFist Needs Your Help
Friend of SFist, Julie, sent us an e-mail this morning about yet another assault, this time in the Marina. Believe it or not, the cops weren't that much of a help in this case either and Julie says that not only did the cops not make an arrest but that it seems likely they didn't take suspect names in their police report. So since they weren't of much help, she turns to us to see if we could help her out.
Your Fun MUNI Story of the Day
We got this story from Friend of SFist, Ian about his MUNI adventure over the weekend.
SFist Christopher's Best From The Past 365 Days
It's January 1, and here are the best things from the last 365 days.
It's Wednesday-- Do You Know Where Your Football Team Is?
What does the move of the San Francisco 49ers to Santa Clara mean for San Francisco's 49ers fans? As we didn't grow up here and as we aren't "the Faithful" it's hard for us to explain. So we asked a Friend of SFist to see what it means to them. Below is his comment.
Don't Recycle Those Mailers!
Commenter and Friend of SFist Greg Dewar's running his semi-regular Blog Post Of The Election Mailers (also known as the Disinfo Rehab Mail Archive), where he collects all the political mailers sent out in San Francisco and posts them as a photomontage on his blog. Check out the last election cycle here.
