Free San Francisco Symphony Outdoor Concert at Noon Today

Bring your lunch and soak up some sun (or find some shade) at Justin Herman Plaza at Noon today, while enjoying the sweet sounds of the San Francisco Symphony. Popular works will be featured, including Liszt, Mephisto Waltz No. 1; Rodgers, Carousel Walt; and Ravel, La Valse.

Bark at Showdogs, Get Free Beer

Now that mainstream media has sunk its dentures in the seemingly fascinating world of social media -- which means they now have the editorial filter of The View's Sherri Shepherd -- they can't get enough of it. Today, CNN reports on Foursquare and EveryBlock, mentioning San Francisco hot dog retailer Showdogs. What CNN had to say about e-new media 3.0 is not important. What is important is that Showdogs is handing out free 8oz beer today to customers who bark at the cashier. [via Eater]

Admission Free At National Parks This Weekend

Entrance fees to national parks will be waived this weekend, folks. (Yay!) In addition to free admission, according to the LA Times, "many park partners, including area hotels and restaurants, will offer discounts and special promotions."

Perusing the Craigslist Free Section

People offer up everything under the sun in Craigslist's free section, including random junk like a bottle of dish-washing detergent and the saddest wheelbarrow ever (too ugly for photos, the ad says). Also available are a gutted old-person scooter that needs a new tire and battery and 2,000 photos of tourists to potentially be cut up into collage masterpieces.

Voice Your Prop 8 Anger with a Tiny, Adorable, Free Sticker!

For those of you who don't care for loud protests, cannot afford to donate, or don't like signing petitions, here's the best way you can show your support for gay marriage. This cute sticker at right -- tastefully adorned with two twee red hearts, measuring a scant 4.5" x 6" (about the size of a postcard) -- which you can get for free. According to this bizarre political activism and/or mobile communications company called CREDO, who are giving the stickers away, "we want everyone to know that we support marriage rights for all couples -- you can let everyone know that you do, too with one of our awesome stickers! You can get one sticker for free. Buy 5 or 50 stickers; we'll donate the profits to fight for marriage equality. For $5 we'll send you 5 stickers; for $25 we'll send 50 stickers."

Free Ben & Jerry's Cone Day is Here!

It's that time of year again, and what great weather for gobbling down a free Ben & Jerry's cone. Help them celebrate 31 years of "scooping the chunkiest, funkiest ice cream, frozen yogurt and sorbet." Check out their new flavors and old favorites, and decide what you want ahead of time. Here's a list of all participating locations in California. Participating San Francisco locations are Macy's, Haight Ashbury, and Fisherman's Wharf. Store hours are Noon to 8 p.m.

Take a Free Walking Tour Today, This Weekend, Any Day

We recently discovered San Francisco City Guides' free walking tours last fall, which have been around for 30 years. They offer seasonally-themed tours throughout the year, including their annual Scavenger Hunt in the fall, as well as regular tours in various neighborhoods every day of the week.

Bach to Bach: Four Free San Francisco Chamber Orchestra Concerts

Here's another great heads-up from funcheapSF.com. The San Francisco Chamber Orchestra will be performing free concerts in downtown San Francisco, Berkeley, and Palo Alto this weekend.

Free Cab Rides Home

What with St. Patrick's Day synonymous with binge drinking, the number of drunk drivers on the road increases. Obviously. So, instead of trying to weave home after your ninth round at your favorite local pub, why not catch a cab home paid for Berg Injury Lawyers. See, their the Safe and Sober Free Ride Home for St. Patrick’s Day program will give residents in Alameda, Oakland, SF and Berkeley rides home for free.

Had enough of the Christmas cheer? Laying low on amateur night, aka New Years Eve, with its $50 covers, vomit-saturated Muni buses, and good-luck-getting-a-cab b.s.? Then this Saturday night is where the real party is! Come one, come all to the KnockOut for "Broken presents: Silent Night, Deadly Night," a free, Post-Christmas dance party mixing the best of old-school goth, industrial, new wave, and indie. SFist will be there (we'll be the ones wearing black and burgundy).

Although trains are running slowly as of 2:30 p.m., CalTrain is expected to return to normal by this evening's commute. If you recall, all choo-choos came to a halt this morning after a "system-wide signal interruption." As an extended olive branch, CalTrain will offer riders free rides for the rest of the day. Rides will be on the house until 1:30 a.m. Friday. Also, Caltrain tickets can be honored on SamTrans buses and on VTA routes 22 and 522. (Can you imagine if Muni started being this kind to riders? They'd be in financial ruins in less that a week. Well, more than they already are, that is.)

Free bicycle lights will be handed out at five service stations throughout San Francisco tonight. This is all a part of "Light Up the Night," a darkness awareness event, if you will, brought to you by SFMTA and the SF Bicycle Coalition. Since December is the darkest month of the year and bike commuters must deal with an earlier nightfall, volunteers will install front and back bicycle lights at Market Street at Duboce Avenue, Howard Street at 8th Street, Valencia Street at Cesar Chavez Street (St. Luke's Hospital), McAllister Street at Webster Street (Ella Hill Hutch Center), and Polk Street at California Street. Remember: it happens from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. tonight.

Dear SF Cabs:

Today is National Donut Day, folks. Wee! Every first Friday of June, "National Doughnut Day honors the Salvation Army "Lassies" of WWI. It is also used as a fund raiser for needy causes of the Salvation Army."

Here's your chance to win a spot on Grand Ole Party's guest list for their upcoming concert with Rogue Wave on Saturday night at the Fillmore. We promised and we never break our promises. (Well, at least we try not to.)

Oh no. Here it comes again: Ben & Jerry's Free Cone Day.

A small protest was held at City Hall yesterday by 400-plus pissed off Tibetan immigrants, honoring the 49th anniversary of Tibet's uprising against China, but also San Francisco's hosting of the Olympic torch. Just a preface of what will happen in the city next month, San Francisco will be the focus of a major protest since it's the only US city hosting the Olympic torch relay in the 2008 Beijing games.

When first reading the headline, "Google Gives All SF Homeless Free Voicemail" on our Digg feed, we didn't get it. Why the heck would the homeless want free voicemail? Aren't there more vital things the homeless need?

able to find hundreds of tomatoes hidden in Dolores Park (map) San Francisco, each and every one with cash attached." Nifty.

Each Tuesday we will feature new music that should (or whatever) be on your radar.

And honk they did. Yesterday a worldwide Scientology protest took place by "Anonymous" (AKA Project Chanology, an Internet-based protest against the Church of Scientology), and we caught a few images of the action on our rickety, old cellular communication device. Had we had a better camera, we could've gotten images of the police surrounding the Scientology building entrance; the tour guide telling his gaggle of tourists that John Travolta was, in fact, inside the Montgomery Street building (he was not), and more. Alas.

Tomorrow is BART Rider Appreciation / Thank You Day, and you, dear BART riders, will reap the benefits. The people at TransFair USA will give away 50,000 coupons for a shot of fair trade espresso from Tully's Coffee. Perfect for getting a move on in the morning and getting things moving, you know, down there.

A pod of orcas has been seen off the coast of Monterey Bay, way far south of where the whales normally travel. Scientists are guessing that the "collapse" in the chinook salmon population is responsible. Normally, these whales from the Puget Sound, never need travel south of the Columbia River, which empties on the border between Washington and Oregon. Since this is the sixth year the whales have been seen off of Monterey, the current salmon problem is looking more and more like a crisis. If Free Willy had enough to eat up in the Puget Sound, he wouldn't have to make such a long journey.

If only results of this Kaisar study came out on Friday. Then we may have seen more interesting placards at Walk for Life on Saturday. "Coffee Kills," "Vegan, Caffeine-Free, and Pro-Life," for example.

Tickets are $20.00 general admission plus applicable service charges...all ages

Attention conspiracy buffs: There's a secret project underway to seize control all of San Francisco's traffic lights, just like how the terrorists did in . Well, okay, the civic initiative (called "SFgo") isn't TECHNICALLY a secret; while it's true that nobody talks about it and current information is hard to come by, that's just because the project is really really boring. But here's something to spice it up: President Bush just gave it a half million bucks in the FY2008 Omnibus Appropriations. (Along with $12 million for the next phase of the Third Street line, and the impending Central Subway disaster.)

Mayor Gavin Newsom says that one of his "top priorities is to ensure that every San Franciscan has a safe and happy New Year. Riding Muni is a smart and green way to ring in the new year." (Thanks, Gavin!) And with a firm flick of his wrist, this New Year's Eve, starting at 8 p.m., Muni will be free all night, which is about what it's worth. The free rides come to a screeching halt at 6 a.m., Tuesday, January 1.

Compared to the same time last year, this week BART saw a 20% jump in riders traveling to SFO during the Christmas week. How was this done? Well, according to reports, the dramatic increase was partly due to a "Kids Ride Free" promotion, which exposed itself to an unsuspecting public on 12/22. (Thankfully, we missed this promotion by one day. Lucky us. But tell us, was there an inordinate amount of little people on the trains last Saturday?)

The music starts at 8 p.m. at Ruby Skye; $50-100.

  • Ladies night at Gestalt Haus: Tonight, it seems, it's ladies night at this hot sausage fest. (Amscray, sexy gentlemen cyclists.) Every Wednesday, in fact, women who dig women are welcome to dive into a plate of links and sip pints for a mere $3 at this bicyclist-friendly bar. Free bike parking, too!
