Don't get us wrong: We hella love Oakland, in all its urban, slightly dangerous, Brooklyn-in-the-90s sort of glory. But excuse us if we chuckle a little finding it on a list of places around the world to visit this year, sandwiched between London and Tokyo, in today's New York Times. They cite the three-year-old Fox Theater and the burgeoning food and bar scene — specifically Commis, Hawker Fare, and Daniel Patterson's Plum, Plum Bar, and Haven — as signs that Oakland is finally coming into its own, at least in the eyes of NYT-reading tourists. more ›

Sad news, Moz fans: Morrissey has just announced that tonight's show at Oakland's Fox Theater has been cancelled due to a bandmate's injury. According to an email from Morrissey's publicist, his drummer has sustained an unfortunate eye injury. more ›

Oakland City Auditor Courtney Ruby has been in an ongoing battle with the Oakland City Council and city staff because she insists they didn't do a good enough job monitoring and scrutinizing cost overruns on the highly successful and quite lovely renovation of the Fox Theater. The whole project cost $91 million and was completed in 2009, but that included about $58 million in extra expenses and change orders, according to Ruby. Despite hailing from nearby Palm Desert, Queens of the Stone Age won't be performing at Coachella this weekend -- they last performed at the fest in 2003. They will, however, be performing tonight at the Fox in Oakland tonight (it's sold out, but tickets are going for about $50-$60 on craigslist right about now). more ›

We were originally going to put a cursory summary of Partners in Preservation's program in Day Around The Bay, but after poking around on the website, it's so cool that we've elevated it to a stand-alone post. American Express, in connection with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the World Monuments Fund, will give $1 million to historic sites around the Bay Area.
