On the heels of Forbes annual Priciest ZIP Codes List comes their annual list of America's Most Dangerous Cities — and, surprise, there is no overlap between the two. As for the latter, the Bay Area's own Oakland comes in at #3, failing to beat four-time winner Detroit. Forbes writes: "Oakland's high levels of poverty and proximity to drug corridors combine to generate lots of violence. The city across the Bay from San Francisco ranks first nationwide in violent robberies."

The frightening city of Stockton — so bad that A's pitcher Dallas Braden went on a public tirade last month and threatened to leave his hometown after his grandmother was robbed and himself carjacked, while police did nothing — comes in a #8 in between Baltimore, Maryland (#7) and Cleveland, Ohio (#9). Regarding Stocking, the magazine notes: "It's hard to control crime when your city is broke. Stockton filed for bankruptcy in June and has cut back dramatically on policing, exacerbating the city's longstanding problems with violence."

The list is based on the number of violent crimes in a year per 100,000 people. Detroit beats out Karachi, Pakistan and Juarez, Mexico with 2,137 crimes per 100,000, and that would include murders, rapes, robberies and aggravated assaults. They saw 344 murders last year. Thus, Detroit has lost more than 200,000 residents since 2001.

Interestingly, when it comes to violent robberies, Oakland is actually #1 in the nation. The much maligned city across the Bay is a frequent fixture on lists like this, and currently has about 1700 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

The list, if you dare:

10. Buffalo, New York
9. Cleveland, Ohio
8. Stockton, California
7. Baltimore, Maryland
6. Atlanta, Georgia
5. Birmingham, Alabama
4. Memphis, Tennessee
3. Oakland, California
2. St. Louis, Missouri
1. Detroit, Michigan

New York City's Upper East Side and the Silicon Valley towns of splendor and wealth in California dominated Forbes' 2012 Priciest ZIP Codes List. Atherton (#3), Hillsborough (#5), Los Altos Hills (#7) all managed to crack the top ten. The annual list, published on Tuesday, ranks ZIP code areas based on the median list price of homes.

And what homes indeed! This understated and totally reasonable 10-bed, 6-bath, 14,000-square-foot home in Atherton asked for $22,800,000 in May. The perfect house in which to raise a family and to strangle Alexis Carrington.

While this 5 bedroom Hillsborough house, boasting nearly 36,000 square feet as well as three separate apartments and a guest house, only costs $48,888,000. Sweet Jesus.

John Chambers, Chair of the Board and CEO of Cisco Systems, Inc., put up his Los Altos 5-bed, 8-bath, 8,280-square-foot home, which is "comprised of 3 adjoining parcels totaling over 6 acres and the property is accessed from two separate streets," for $14,800,000. Why does on e need 8 bathrooms? The answer is, why not!

The top ten:

1. 10065, New York, NY
2. 07620, Alpine, NJ
3. 94027, Atherton, CA
4. 11962, Sagaponack, NY
5. 94010, Hillsborough, CA
6. 10014, New York, NY
7. 94022, Los Altos Hills, CA
8. 10021, New York, NY
9. 90274, Rolling Hills, CA
10.10075, New York, NY

Forbes annual list of Best Institutes for Higher Learning and Contact Making came out today. The coveted list, compiled by Forbes and Washington, D.C.'s Center for College Affordability and Productivity, focuses on data and issues "that matter the most to students" such as quality of teaching, career prospects, graduation rates, and levels of debt. The Bay Area's own Stanford ranked #3, just behind Williams and top-ranking Princeton. In more shocking news, UCLA (#45) pulled ahead of UC Berkeley (#50). Interesting. Or not.

Tony private University of San Francisco ranked #177, while the always festive and inarguably rad UC Santa Cruz came in at #199. (Any school with a banana slug for a mascot deserves nothing less than top-ten glory. Bah.)

Rounding out the bottom five? Columbia College Chicago (646), Morgan State University (647), South Carolina State University (648), Johnson & Wales University (649), and Texas Southern University (650).

Another alarming tidbit was cost. Four years at one of the esteemed private school, like University of Chicago (#4) or Williams (#2), costs more than a quarter of a million dollars. A degree from "more affordable" state schools, like the College of William & Mary (#40) or UC Berkeley (#50), still costs around $100,000, even for in-state students.

How did your school fare?

Well, the Novato joint was the only Bay Area eatery to land on Forbes list of highest grossing restaurants in America. Last year they pulled in a whopping $18.7 million with a menu boasting such "classic" fare as coconut shrimp, chicken scallopini, penne pasta alfredo, and bacon-wrapped filet mignon. Basically, a menu over which your average San Francisco food twit would strain a muscle rolling their eyes. (For the record, we would totally eat there.)

Rickey's also urges customers to break the cardinal rule of waiting to swim before you eat. Forbes points out that "in the summer diners not only get live jazz with their dinner, they can also swim in Rickey's pool."

A few Yelp reviews:

• "Fun location where the kids can swim and play while you wait for dinner." - Des D.

• "My dinner (a prawn and scallop special) was very good! Hubby's prime rib was 'ok.' Dessert was an apple crisp (apples weren't peeled) that was also ok." - EC

• "NO SOUP. NO SALAD. DESSERT WAS A SMALL DISH OF VANILLA ICE CREAM WITH A BIT OF CHOCOLATE SAUCE OR FLAVORED LIKE CHOCOLATE." - Hope H.

• "One of the things that I love about Rickeys is that they have a gluten-free menu! They have a decent selections of appetizers, entrees, and desserts that are all gluten free, which makes eating and ordering here so easy if you are not able to tolerate gluten." - AM

Anyway, the majority of Forbes' list is bombarded with steakhouses and upscale crab shacks. Not too surprising. But we're surprised to see that a Novato joint with a pool was the only restaurant to make the list. Anyway, according to their site, "Rickey's serves old-fashioned American favorites, such as spit-roasted meats, slow smoked prime rib, and seasonal cuisine. The affordable and comfortable cuisine focuses on only the freshest ingredients from the tremendous bounty from small local growers."

San Francisco: Not as Overpriced as You Thought

According to yet another <a href="ht...

SF News

forbes

list

ranking

Brock Keeling

Not to be outdone, Modesto came in just under medal contention at 5th place.
