We Get By With a Little Yelp From Our Friends
We had already been pretty fascinated with the growing trend of online user reviews lately. Then last week, the Chronicle came out with an article on "amateur" food blogs and restaurant reviews, about which SFist Jeremy posted an awesome rant, prompting some great dialog in the comments. This further prompted us to ponder how much online user reviews affect, and reflect, our own daily consumeristic lives.
Food Blog Round-Up
We haven't really posted a lot on Shuna the past couple weeks, since confessing our blog crush on her. There are lots of Bay Area food blogs (close to 100 that we know about, and that's not counting the restaurant review blogs) and we like to spread the love. However, we're going to link to her a lot this week, and we don't feel bad about it at all. First off, we are in awe of the way she stunningly eviscerates a reader for complaining about the high prices of Cafe Gratitude, which Shuna liked. Seriously, it's like watching a mongoose take down a cobra--mesmerizing, lethal and so very, very right. She was probably already amped up from this post, explaining what actions she will take this May 1st to support the Day Without An Immigrant demonstrations for immigrants's rights, and dispensing tips about what her readers can do. In short, Shuna talks the talk, walks the walk, and writes poetry. She is a samurai of the kitchen.
Gastronomique: the Richmond's Rich Richmond.
Two food blogs, Life begins at 30 and Locavores have been organizing the Eat Local Challenge, an effort to support local producers and encourage awareness of what is on our plates, by eating for the whole month of August, food grown within some radius of where you live. We find it a noble goal. However, our participation could be summarized in our nodding with approval, maybe saying ‘you go, guys’, then eating Dungeness crab that has to be flown in from Alaska, or God knows where, since it is out-of-season locally. We would be apologetic about it, but there are only so many events one can participate in, and -thanks to SFist Sam’s masterly organized competition- we were busy impersonating Food TV’s Rachael Ray for a day.
Interview: Owen Linderholm
Is blogging so pervasive that it will enter your diet and your library? At SFist, we belive so. We have a vested interest, with contributors creating excellent, beautiful food blogs. So we shoot the question to Owen Linderholm. Owen edited an actual book, Digital Dish, a selection of posts from 24 different food blogs, four of them from the San Francisco bay area. Owen also founded Press for Change, from whom you can order the book.
Does Anybody Read 7x7?
Sam Breach of Becks & Posh bravely opened up a copy of 7x7 magazine (San Francisco's answer to society mag New York Magazine) only to find her own name in it! Of course, 7x7 doesn't have any of their content on-line (for shame). From Sam's report, the article looks at the influence of online critics versus Chronicle bigwig Michael Bauer in terms of chef's opinions. Sam was nice enough to not only copy out this quote but to link to some of the best local foodies out there:
