Michael Phelps Cereal Donated to California Food Banks

After Kellogg's foolishly dropped gold medal Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps' endorsement contract -- if you recall, he was caught taking a hit of mary jane earlier this year -- the lanky sports star the company decided to donate "two tons of Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes with the gold medal winner on the box" to local food banks, according to NBC Bay Area. Kellogg's loss is hungry San Francisco's gain. A San Francisco Food Bank spokesperson Gayle Keck told what's-his-name, "We do regularly see products with packages that are no longer desirable ... Though Kellogg's and their star spokesman hit a patch of rough water, San Francisco's hungry just got thrown a life preserver."

Piff! Pow! Zwap!

Feel that? Why, those are your heart stings being tugged care of us and this cool little guy over here on the right. (Who like totally did not just make us completely tear up right now, so shut up!)

Tuesday was National Hunger Awareness Day, and we're late mentioning it. We're kinda dragging our feet when it comes to this serious, depressing stuff. Turns out that a bunch of kids, when they are not fed through the school system (minus the fresh fruits) during summer break, go hungry. In California. Now.

At next TuesdayFriday's MTA meeting (March 20, 2pm, Room 400, City Hall), they'll be moving to pay off five claims. Most are unlitigated, so we can't look up the details; the other two are vehicle-property-damage cases that are pretty standard-issue, at least for Muni. One, Evelyn Bravos versus SF, involves a $3,000 fender-bender in the Richmond; the other, San Francisco Food Bank versus SF, involves a bus crash that did about $18,000 in damage.

at Biscuits and Blues (401 Mason St.), legendary New Orleans pianist, Henry Butler performs solo piano, combining the classical and jazz elements he absorbed at Louisiana School for the Blind and Southern University with the gospel, blues and R&B sounds he heard growing up in New Orleans. (8pm & 10pm shows)

On Thursday morning, we bent our self imposed no-drinks-before-noon"guideline" and attended a fun food and wine event. What made this invite stand out was that the wine tasting, Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau 2006, was tied to an important cause, the San Francisco Food Bank. Had we known we would be able to witness and talk to a good natured young woman dressed in a gigantic Beaujolais Nouveau costume we would've RSVP'd even sooner. Oh, and did we mention we dig romantic French accordion music by Odile Lavault while we sip and nibble?

There's a lot of tastiness going on tonight on both sides of the bay.

Saturday: We're going to the first Amoeba Auction, planned to be a weekly event to directly aid musicians and independent relief efforts on the Gulf Coast from Hurricane Katrina. Unique, one of a kind, and collectible items (the VIP tickets to Bauhaus at the Warfield will be ours, bitches!) Amoeba will match all winning bids from the auctions, so you can bid with impunity. It all starts at 4.
