Meanwhile, On The Municipal Railway...

Mayor Ed Lee celebrated 100 years of San Francisco's Municipal Railway today by re-launching Muni's first streetcar, the restored Car No. 1. Joining the Mayor for the dignitaries-only first ride in the century-old railcar are Senator Diane Feinstein, former Mayor Willie Brown (who would rather walk), SFMTA Director Ed Reiskin and members of the Board of Supervisors. more ›

What You Should Know About Flattening Coins On the F-Market Rail

What You Should Know About Flattening Coins On the F-Market Rail

For some bored downtown workerbees, flattening coins on the F-Market track is a shiny way to pass the time. Take, for example, Matthew Knudsen, who pressed these beauties just the other day. SFist asked Knudsen to tell us how he did it. "I work at an ad agency across from the F, and walk over the tracks everyday and decided to put some coins on the line and see if they'd squash, like on railroad tracks," he explained. "After a few cars knocking them off, I got a train to nail two of them... They sort of jump off when the train hits them, and flattens them right out." more ›

Today: Come Yell At The People Who Want To Raise F-Market Fare To $5

Today: Come Yell At The People Who Want To Raise F-Market Fare To $5

The potentially horrible human beings on the board of the SFMTA -- who, among other things, could raise the F-Market line fare to an astounding and inaccessible $5, which would render them big ol' meanies, even though these recommendations were probably made in consultation with board members -- are having a meeting today. The SFMTA weekly meeting should prove to be a hot one, so we'd hate for you to miss it. -- especially considering the righteous frustration many of you spewed over last week's Muni announcement. more ›

Bad Idea, San Francisco: $5 F-Market Rides

Bad Idea, San Francisco: $5 F-Market Rides

The MTA is proposing cuts to every Muni line in an effort to close a plus-sized $16.9 million budget gap. What's more, and you might want to grab a nearby trashcan to use as a makeshift airsick bag before you read this, they're proposing a jarring fee hike to ride the USEFUL and CONVENIENT historic streetcars that zip along Market Street more ›

Milk F-Market Streetcar Defaced With Homosexual Slurs

Milk F-Market Streetcar Defaced With Homosexual Slurs

A historic Muni streetcar was pulled out of service last week after anti-gay graffiti was found on one of the placards on the side of the train. The streetcar, dedicated to the late Harvey Milk, was tagged sometime during Pride, the Bay Area Reporter reports. "Sometime during Pride Month a tagger wrote the word 'fag' on Milk's chin and blackened out one of his front teeth on a photo of the late politician on one of the panels." On a different sign, the BAR goes on to say, the tagger(s) "wrote the word 'faggot.'" Mean! SFMTA spokesman Judson True said, "Especially in this historic week we want to be sure to honor Milk's legacy on this streetcar so we will do everything we can to remove any graffiti and get the dedication panels back in place as quickly as possible." This week, if you recall, Milk was honored with a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Anyway, the defaced streetcar was given a Silkwood-scrub down of any and all anti-gay graffiti, and put back into service on Tuesday. more ›

Muni Crash Update

Muni Crash Update

SFMTA director Nathaniel Ford expressed deep sadness and frustration over yesterday's Muni crash, which injured 6 people, saying in a statement, "This accident was intolerable and deeply frustrating, I know that the riding public is concerned about Muni safety, and so am I. Our ongoing work to improve Muni safety is clearly more urgent than ever." more ›

Sick Boy's Wish: Riding SF Trolleys

Sick Boy's Wish: Riding SF Trolleys

Some boys would request a trip to Disneyland. Some would like a shiny, red Ferrari. Some would want to touch a perky boob. Eleven-year-old Henry Mulvey of Massachusetts, however, wanted to ride the F-Market as one of his requests. See, Henry, who was born with a medical disorder, has a thing for trolley cars. After asking the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help him out, Henry was sent to SF yesterday where he "rode five trolleys and a cable car, bumping the number of trolleys he was ridden to 'up near 100.'" more ›

Best MUNI Line Poll

Best MUNI Line Poll

Here t'is, just in time for the four day work week, the Official Best MUNI Line poll. We have the F Market Line as the favorite because, well, who doesn't love that line? We love riding them all the time despite the fact they're always crowded. Also tapped as favorites are the Cable Cars. Would we be San Francisco without them?. Then there's the Fightin' 1 California which seems to be a favorite of a lot of people. We've always found the 1 to be one of the better lines, mainly because they seem to roll by every minute. The dark horse, however, just might be the 41 if only because it's the, well, most scenic of routes. more ›

Your Commute

Those of you trying to cross Market Street to get to, or out of, the Mission last night were probably stymied by yesterday's traffic debacle -- an F Market lost control at the top of the Market Street slope (starting at around Duboce, we think) and slid all the way down to Valencia, hitting about five cars along the way. One car driver and the train conductor suffered minor injuries; there were about 15 people on the train at the time. Traffic was tied up for about 2 hours after. more ›
