At a pun-filled press conference in Manhattan this afternoon, Marissa Mayer brushed aside this weekend's big acquisition to focus on Yahoo's other brand that "dropped the e." After a quick pat on the back and an announcement that the company would be opening an East Coast office in the old New York Times building in Times Square, Mayer told the crowd that her company had pledged to "make Flickr awesome again."

For starters, Flickr has more or less removed any space restrictions by giving every user 1 terabyte of space, or about 537,731 high resolution photos. In addition to the massive amount of storage space, Yahoo also gave the site design a refresh to bring it more in line with Facebook's move to bigger, more-image heavy layouts. Each user's photostream is now a seamless, full-bleed roll of photos. Like Facebook, individual pages now carry a cover image in the header.

Updated layouts aside, slideshows now get a slick, Ken Burns-y effect (just add your own soundtrack).

Flickr Pro is going away now that every user has so much available storage, but the interface will now be ad-supported. There will be an ad-free model for anyone willing to shell out $49.99 per year and people who already spent 25 bucks on a recent Pro account get to use the service ad-free for now. Should you somehow manage to fill your terabyte of data, you can buy a second terabyte for $500 per year.

Along with the press event, Yahoo will be aggressively 11 of the largest billboards in Times Square. For the next few weeks, any time someone takes a step out into Times Square, it will feel like they're immersed in Flickr photos.

Although Instagram may have riled nearly 100% of their users by changing their terms of service late Monday, and claiming the right to use your photos and photos of you in any advertisement they want, new mom/Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer quietly released a new version of her company's Flickr mobile app earlier this month. Flickr's new photo filters drew quick comparisons to Instagram's most talked-about feature, but in the wake of yesterday's immense wave of backlash, Flickr's offering is looking increasingly appealing to users who aren't interested in giving away the rights to their photos.

While we doubt Instagram ever really intended to sell the vast majority of photos they host — most of which are just pictures of feet anyway — the idea that Instagram was entitled to sell users' original works bristled more than a few professional photographers who helped prove the service was useful for more than just documenting latte art. Instagram tried to counter the negative PR, claiming the new terms allow the company to fight spam and build better features for everyone, but that says nothing of the bit where Instagram can use your work — you amazing foot-photographer, you — however they see fit. As photographer Noah Kalina put it, no photographer should ever agree to such a contract:

The Instagram TOS is a contract no professional or non professional should ever sign. Walk away.
— Noah Kalina (@noahkalina) December 17, 2012

Meanwhile, Flickr's photo-sharing service has long been a favorite among photographers, although it fell out of favor as mobile photography picked up speed and Facebook became the most popular place to share photos. In the days before the Instagram TOS scandal, tech pundit Anil Dash lamented the shift away from Flickr's openness:

Five years ago, most social photos were uploaded to Flickr, where they could be tagged by humans or even by apps and services, using machine tags. Images were easily discoverable on the public web using simple RSS feeds. And the photos people uploaded could easily be licensed under permissive licenses like those provided by Creative Commons, allowing remixing and reuse in all manner of creative ways by artists, businesses, and individuals.

The new Flickr app provides a range of photo filters (adorably named after exotic animals) and plays nice with Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr — which should be enough to keep the casual photographers interested. Advanced settings give the more discerning iPhoneographers a range of editing options outside of Instagram's square format, the ability to set privacy levels by pre-defined groups, and add tags that won't mess up a pristine caption with a stack of #hashtags. (Hyperallergic has a great run-down of some of Flickr's more technical editing features here.)

Most importantly to the conversation currently at hand though: Marissa Mayer apparently injected some of that "Don't be Evil" philosophy from her former gig when her team breathed new life into Flickr mobile. The Creative Commons license, which allows a users work to be re-purposed as long as original credit is given, comes along with every photo on Flickr and can be tweaked on a per-photo basis. This is crucial in a time when Tweeted photos are increasingly important to breaking news, but Instagram seems more content to keep their photos locked up and impossibly hard to find. Instagram's photos always felt a little fleeting, but that suddenly makes sense if you think about the service as a flipbook of slick magazine ads shot by your friends.

Anyhow, Instagram isn't just sitting on their heels waiting to see who leaves. The company has already hinted at another revision to their terms of service in a tweet this afternoon:

We've heard you that the updates to our Privacy Policy & Terms of Service are raising a lot of questions. We'll have more to share very soon
— Instagram (@instagram) December 18, 2012

We're back with more Ed Jew news! And this time, with a vast Sunset-wing conspiracy.

Former District 4 supervisor Ed Jew may have pled out of his state court civil suit ("okay, you caught me, I don't actually live here"), but his federal criminal extortion case ("a man can't get a $40,000 bubble tea once in awhile?") continues apace. In his federal case, Ed's now asked for a hearing on whether his former lawyer, <strike>the Iraqi minister of information</strike> Steven Gruel, committed ethical violations.

Namely, Ed's now claiming that the whole mess was all a "calculated attack" by Ed's Sunset-area political enemies Jaynry Mak and Leland Yee, who ensnared Gruel into their nefarious plan to get the feds to investigate Ed's alleged Quickly shakedown. Gruel then, according to Ed, turned around and ensnared Ed into hiring him as his lawyer. Nefarious!!

Gruel, for what it's worth, says he fully informed Ed about his involvement in the initial investigations before agreeing to represent Ed, and Ed signed a waiver saying he didn't mind. And a third party legal expert that the Examiner called said Ed's motion was "silly." Aw, we miss the Ed Jew silly! These latest city government outrages are too serious to be fun.

We're thankful to Flickr user Lulu Vision for giving us a heads-up in the SFist Contribute section regarding tonight's Lower Polk Neighbors meeting with SF Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White about Fire Station 3 and how they're trying to make us all go deaf with their sirens. Hilariously enough, this fire station is located right next to Diva's and Grass Roots. Why would they ever want to leave?

From the flyer:

The current building boom that is taking place in SF Central City area at this very moment will add several thousands of new dwellings to the service area of Fire Station 3 -- already the busiest in the nation*. Due to the development and the practice of dispatching a fire truck and an ambulance on every medical call (near 100,000 annually), a significant increase in the already hourly around-the-clock noise from 140-decibel air horns and sirens is to be expected unless effective measures are put in place by the SF Fire Department to reduce the noise.

* source: San Francisco Fire Department -- statistics

We live just a few blocks from this fire station, and we can attest to the ear-piercing decibel of those sirens. We nearly had a heart attack when we first moved to the neighborhood and were awakened at 4 a.m. (Now we just have a white noise machine in the room, much in part to filter out the drunk Academy of Art students.)

If anyone out there is going to the meeting, please let us know how it went in the comments!
