Hi, I’m Brock, and I’ll be your new editor. A wee bit about me: I used to work here writing stuff, where I skipped innumerable important deadlines by looking at this very site. I’m now humbled and honored to be a part of something that helped my work productivity take such a sharp nosedive; I only hope that I can help do the same for you.

The 2005 'Fisties went even better than we'd hoped, with great comments, discussion, and suggestions followng almost all the posts.

We here at SFist like our celebrities like we like our men: insane, rude, dirty, and fabulous. Oh, wait, that's NOT how we like our men anymore (that's 12 years of therapy finally paying off, folks.) But any celebrity who seems too classy, clean, or "just like us" is not who makes us buy that Us magazine at the Cala point of purchase.

Our favorite place to shop for non-essentials is, bar none, Super 7. We wander their tiny store for ages, certainly inciting suspicions of shoplifting. But we swear we're not! We just love everything in the store SO MUCH that we can't make up our damn minds.

Oh, how to choose, how to choose. There are simply so many Movements in this town that it's only to be expected that some would utterly fail to have any impact whatsoever on our lives, other than giving us something to bitch about. For example, there was all that chatter a few months ago about banning pit bulls. And that citywide gun ban thingy that is probably, um, well, just a wee bit unconsitutional. And did you know, there's big-business-advocacy groups like SFSOS that want to see MORE cars downtown? Sure, that'll happen. And then there's folks like Jack Myers and Supervisor McGoldrick trying to delay the building of the Transbay terminal; their only impact on its construction will be to push it even MORE over budget. And the proposition about military recruiters not being welcome at state schools -- it's nonbinding and probably won't have any impact on recruiting, or gays in the military, or the war in Iraq. But it does provide us all with excellent new scenic overlooks of our own navels.

When people ask us (as they do, with surprising frequency) why we don't eat meat, we often answer "because we can." We consider ourselves very lucky to be living in a city that offers indulgence to many a less-common political, dietary, and spiritual bent, as we get to consume the results.

Beautiful pictures from Bay Area restaurants. How many do you recognize, how many of them were new in 2005 and which one of them, sadly, closed down recently?

Let's review our sushi cred, will you? For SFist, we have been to quite a few sushi places; we are very familiar with the big names in the sushi market, the Ebisus, Blowfishs or Kabutos, which we visit periodically, and our s.o. comes from Japan. Yet, we find ourselves back at Hamano a few times a month, rain or shine. Why don't we ever stray too far? Part of it is the relationship we have with the management there, whom said s.o. befriended after becoming a regular there. Most of it is the stellar sushi.

Man, every day in 2005 had some kind of good San Francisco Bay Area news story -- whether it was the lady who planted the finger in the Wendy's chili, Bill O'Reilly, explosions downtown, anarchist yutzes in the Mission, and nude art in bars, to pick some totally random examples we pulled from a disorganized riffling through the SFist archives search engine. How can we pick just one favorite news story for the entire year? We love them all equally!

Julius Kahn must have done something right to have the 'Fistiest park in the city named after him. Whatever he did*, his best accomplishment is to have this playground to his name. Nested in the south side of the Presidio, facing the mansions of the well-to-do, it breathes the charme discret de la bourgeoisie. And it is a city park, so even you can afford it too.

There are rumors swirling around --which will propagate and give credence to, of course, despite having absolutely no further information -- that Chef Daniel Humm could be leaving Campton Place Restaurant, just off Union square, due to some reshuffling after the acquisition of his restaurant (and the hotel which hosts it) by some LA businessmen. So just in case there is a hint of truth in this, we'll hurry and award him the first Fancy Restaurant 'Fistie. We'll make sure it is accompanied by a very heavy cast iron trophy, just so lifting a suitcase with a 'Fistie in it proves too overwhelming a task, and he just stays put.

Boy--we sure love completely subjective awards, and we're super thankful for a chance to give out a few of our own.

Sure, the Bay Area is pretty much tops in tech — but we're also tops in freakitude! So far this 'Fistie, we're casting a wider net, roaming around the world for the not just the coolest tech, but by far the weirdest. Don't worry, the winners are a home-town team. While great things were done by leaders in the field like Yahoo, Apple, Google, Sun, Intel and smaller companies like SixApart, Technorati, Odeo, Audioblog, Tribe, we don't want to coo over the best database or interface of the year. We want far-out, man! And so we begin...

Were you among the tens of thousands who attended the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival this year? We cannot say enough good things about this event. If you're a fan of folk, Americana, country, bluegrass, or roots music of any ilk, you should have been at Golden Gate Park on September 30th and October 1st. This year's Hardly Strictly drew over 50 acts, most of which were headliners in their own right. Lucky for us, a friend of ours who was performing hooked us up with all access backstage passes, and we were able to witness how the vibe was as nice among the artists as it was among the crowd.

When asked to nominate the best place to see art in this city, we admit to feeling a bit reticent.

When it came time to pick the best place to shop for food, we fretted over the decision. We knew the winner would be a farmer's market, since seasonal produce bought from local farmers beats virtually every store's fruits and vegetables. But which market to choose? The Bay Area probably has more farmer's markets per capita than anywhere else, each with its own personality and devotees.

9 random pictures of pizza from 5 different Bay Area Pizza producers. Can you guess all 5 venues?

It’s about that time again (for the first time). Time to heap a whole year’s worth of praise on to several lucky and talented establishments that did us the kind service of getting us drunk. Yes indeed, ‘tis the season for recognizing the best of the best, the places that don’t settle for second place, that realize life is a marathon not a sprint, and any other clichéd ‘successories’ slogans you can think of. Crack-a-lack-a!! Barrespondent Drew here to give out some FISTies!!

It's not like we didn't warn you -- the 'Fisties are here! All year long, we've done our best to keep our readers informed of the best and brightest in the Bay Area, and the 'Fisties are a distillation of that work. We'll be giving one out every weekday the rest of the year, so keep coming back (not that you wouldn't, already).
