fadetoclear04.jpg Watch out for that lady in the delivery room! A pregnant woman in San Mateo county, enraged at her baby daddy's constant exhortations to prenatal nutrition, stabbed him in the stomach with a serrated knife. The DA says she's had plenty of criminal cases with a pregnant victim, but never one with a pregnant perp. People in SF are wondering if a browned-out fire station on Market and Sanchez might have been able to save some of the people who died in the fire on Capp Street were it not for the budget cuts. Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White notes that the other fire stations responded within 2-4 minutes of the call and that the people who died had died immediately, but other firefighters are calling for a repeal of the brownouts policy. And glug, glug, glug -- a boat sank off the dock of the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, leaving only an oil slick where the 30 x 80 foot barge used to be. The barge probably sank because it was constantly being banged around by its neighbor, the so-called "Artship," which had previously been moored in Oakland as an art gallery. The Artship's current caretakers have taken responsibility for the barge's sinking, and will take the appropriate steps to clean up any pollution caused. more ›

Fire on 16th Street

4698696.jpg Man. Six people were injured, and around 64 people are homeless, after an early morning fire destroyed the big apartment building across the street from Mission Dolores on 16th Street. The firefighters rescued two women and two children from the third floor, where they'd been trapped between the fire on the second floor and the fire on the roof. One guy, who made it out with only his computer, cat, and bike, said, "My friend called me to get the hell out of there, but I hooked up a garden hose to the sink and started pouring water until my hair started burning." He'd lived in the building for ten years. Neither the Mission Dolores nor the synagogue across the street were damaged, due to the wind direction. 120 firefighters responded, and Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White noted it was fortunate that none of the fire stations in the area were on brownout that evening. metallicasanq.jpg Well, we all knew it was going to happen -- SF DA Kamala Harris is bringing charges against Maureen Faibish for felony child endangerment. As Harris said at the press conference, "We are not in the business of vilifying parents, but in this city, we are also not in the business of allowing children to be placed in situations where they are killed when it is completely preventable." Sure. Meanwhile, a girl mauled by a pit bull in Santa Rosa the other day is recovering, and an elderly man successfully fled a pit bull attack in San Jose. The SFPD has released the 911 tapes (audio) of Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White's husband's subsequently-recanted tale of spousal abuse. "My wife is JOANNE HAYES-WHITE, THE FIRE CHIEF!!! Ow! No! Don't come near me again with that pint glass!! Don't hit me again! Aaaaaaaaagh!! Did I mention my wife is JOANNE HAYES-WHITE, THE FIRE CHIEF???" And the feds indicted 19 people in the medical marijuana enforcement action, or, what they're calling "Operation Urban Harvest." Kevin Ryan, the Bay Area's US Attorney, claims that the people busted were using medical marijuana stores as a front to sell $5 million of pot to healthy people. more ›

finalanalysis.jpg Domestic turmoil -- Sean White, the non-hyphenated husband of SF Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White, called the cops Sunday night, claiming that his wife had hit him on the head with a pint glass. The cops, though, noticed no signs of injury on Mr. White. As of Monday, though, Sean White is retracting the story, and reports have Chief Hayes-White telling the cops that he hit himself and then called 911. The couple is in the middle of a separation. The pit bull panel has met, and has decided it will begin lobbying the state to rescind its ban on breed-specific legislation, so it can institute requirements that all pit bulls in the city be spayed or neutered. Meanwhile, local fines for failing to microchip or get a license will be raised, more dog education classes will be held, "backyard breeding" will be banned, and dog owners will be required to get liability insurance. And finally, Kaiser Permanente has been fined $200,000 for accidentally putting patient information on a public web page. However, the woman who alerted the media to the privacy breach -- by reposting the data on her blog -- still faces civil liability. more ›

timeaftertime.jpg Oh no! The fire captain who secretly resigned after Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White launched an investigation into his drinking on the job, Steve Gritsch, just got busted on a DUI this weekend. Gritsch was driving south on 101 in Marin, when he drifted off to the side of the road and crashed into the guardrail. Gritsch informed the press that he was not injured and had no further comment. In other DUI news, the allegedly-drunk nanny who hit and killed two kids in Danville, fled the scene in a cab, and then went into hiding for two weeks in San Jose before she was caught cried all the way through the first day of trial. She cried so loud the judge had to stop the questioning of the witness temporarily. Oh, boo hoo hoo hoo -- she probably cried in the cab all the way to San Jose too. And speaking of people making ostentatiously-loud noises in court, Marcellus Cooksey, the guy who shot the tolltaker on the Golden Gate Bridge, pled not guilty at his arraignment yesterday. Cooksey, who shot the tolltaker in the stomach before being shot in the leg by a security guard, was rolled into court in a wheelchair with a splint on his leg, a bandaged hand, and a sweatshirt over his head. During the proceedings, he was shivering and "whimpered loudly several times." Owwwwww. more ›

Drinking With the SFFD

The second-in-command of the San Francisco Fire Department, Deputy Chief Fred Sanchez, stepped down yesterday due to controversy over his actions involving a drunk battalion chief. Some people just can't take the heat, we guess. more ›
