An SFist reader, who has asked to remain anonymous, sent us these photos and the following description of the scene:

Major bus accident occured at about 6:20pm in the Panhandle. Suggest everyone avoid the intersection of Fell & Masonic for awhile. Dozens of fire trucks, police cars, ambulances, etc. are clogging up the streets.

A black [Volkswagen] tried to cut in front of the bus, and instead got caught under the front of the bus.

The bus traveled the rest of the block with the car wedged under it, until it lost control and crashed into the Panhandle. Luckily no one was walking on the path at the time the bus came to a stop.

As of 6:35pm, the bus driver was lying on the ground and an ambulance was on the way.

Though it's hard to see in the photos, there was also a bike being stored on the front of the bus. That poor bike is obviously now a mangled mess.

At least one person was injured and transported to a nearby hospital. We'll update as soon as we know more. More pics below.

The fact that this happened after the new signals is just horrid."

No word yet on the condition of the cyclist.

Is It the '70s All Over Again?

We snapped the above photo at everyone's favorite traffic mess - the Arco station on Fell and Divisadero. The sign on the fence reminded me of photos we'd seen of gas shortages back before we were sentient, but happily for drivers, this isn't the harbinger of shortages or rationing. The station will soon finish with their repair work, and people will once again be able to fill their H2s for $.02/gallon less than at the station across the street! Sadly, that means the traffic mess will return - today was the first time in a very long time that we'd gone up the Fell Street bike lane without having to dodge out into traffic to avoid a car blocking the lane or the sidewalk.

Kind of makes you wonder what would happen if the SFPD stationed an officer at that driveway when the stations reopen? They might make enough in tickets to get rid of San Francisco's perennial budget deficit.

Monster Fall at Monster Park

Egads.
A man fell to his death yesterday at Monster Park after falling 20 feet from the upper concourse area of the stadium to the concrete mezzanine below. Scary. And sad. According to the Chronicle, the 31-year-old sports fan "went to the concession area between sections 5 and 7 to hang out during halftime about 2:20 p.m. and fell over a wall to the floor below."

After two other accidents that happened in the mid 1980s -- one hijink-related, the other similar to the one that happened yesterday -- this brings the stadiums' fatalities to three.

As of today, SFPD have yet to release the name of the victim's identity.

Update: Le Weekly says that the victim's name is Torrey Kretschman. And that he's from Roseville. He suffered both a broken wrist and ankle, but is in fine, fighting, camera-ready condition.

He was trying to get out of the tree, via a traverse line, to visit his poppa waiting down below. But it seems that he was not, in fact, on the line, and then took a nasty fall while trying to ride the non-existent traverse. Ouch. According to NBC 11, "Hill said although he does not want to place blame he believes the accident would not have happened if the university had not put up a fence around the grove." Oh, come now. One, if Hill hadn't been 40 feet up high in a tree to begin with, succumbing to the temptations of gravity, he wouldn't have fallen. Two, he "thought he was connected to a traverse line but he was mistaken." So? It's your fault, you sexy, klutzy bear.

"UC Police Chief Victoria Harrison said that the school built the new fence as a security measure prior to the forcible removal of the protesters from the trees," which should be happening...sometime soon.

But here's to a speedy recovery, Hill. (Little tip: tell the doctors that codeine upsets your stomach, and you'll get the good stuff.)
