The crash temporarily closed westbound I-80 lanes near the incline.

According to KTVU, a four-car collision on the Bay Bridge late Friday night left one man dead and another person injured, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash, which occurred around 11:15 p.m. on the westbound lanes of I-80 near the incline, caused major traffic disruption and temporarily shut down four lanes.

CHP says the incident began when a white Genesis sedan, traveling at a high speed, failed to notice slower traffic ahead and rear-ended a silver Toyota Corolla. The impact triggered a chain reaction, causing the Corolla to collide with a second silver Toyota, which then struck a fourth vehicle—a gray Toyota.

The driver of the Corolla suffered severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not been released. Another person involved in the crash was hospitalized, though their identity and condition remain unclear.

An earlier report had suggested drugs or alcohol may have played a role, but CHP has since stated that impairment is not believed to be a factor. The driver of the Genesis remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

The total number of people involved and the full extent of injuries are still being determined. All westbound lanes were reopened shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday as the investigation continues.

Image: Gaustria/Wikimedia

One Dead In Fast-Moving San Francisco House Fire

Neighbors said 20 to 30 foot flames were shooting from the building.

SF News

fatal fire

fatality

fire

sffd

Eve Batey

One person is dead and a second injured, after an early-morning fire broke out in a home near Glen Canyon Park.

According to the San Francisco Fire Department, the blaze at 44 Molimo Drive was reported at around 4:20 Sunday morning.

According to NBC Bay Area, "neighbors quickly ran out to see if they could help calm the blaze but found 20 to 30-foot flames engulfing the structure for about ten minutes."

When they arrived on the scene, firefighters were met with "heavy fire blowing out of the front of the building," San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Lieutenant Jonathan Baxter said.

"The whole front of the house had flames coming out the front," neighbor Daniel Homsey, told NBC Bay Area. "People had fire hoses, trying to suppress the fire and stop it from spreading to the homes nearby."

That combined effort was successful, the Chron reports, as by 6 a.m. firefighters had contained the blaze and "prevented the flames from spreading to neighboring homes."

However, the SFFD says that one adult was killed in the blaze, their body found on the first floor of the home. According to NBC, they were "killed trying to escape from the front of the home which was engulfed in flames." As of publication time, they had not been publicly identified.

The homeowner managed to escape from the rear of the two-story home, NBC reports. According to Bay City News, that person was injured in the fire but is is stable condition at an area hospital.

According to the SFFD, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

A woman was killed in San Francisco Thursday evening, after she fell from a cliff at Fort Funston.

San Francisco Fire Department spokesperson Lieutenant Jonathan Baxter tells CBS 5 that the incident was reported via 911 at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

The woman, since identified by the Chron as 36-year-old Tracy resident Arezoo Yusufi, was standing to the side of one of the area's hang gliding platforms before the fall, CBS 5 reports.

According to ABC 7, "The victim was apparently alone --- and it is unclear how she fell."

"It's a 300 foot fall," Baxter told ABC 7. "We started life-saving measures...unsuccessful."

The platform itself has a safety barrier, CBS 5 reports. According to NBC Bay Area, "There are signs along the trails warning walkers to stay away from the edge. A lot of footprints also can be seen in those dangerous areas."

“Cliffs anywhere are going to be dangerous," Baxter told CBS 5, "That’s why your San Francisco Fire continuously puts out cliff- and surf-rescue warnings which we did today as well. If you’re going to be in the area you need to stay away from the cliffs."

"Our hearts go out to the victim and her family," SF Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White told ABC 7. "It's always good to have a buddy, or a partner when you're walking."

The day after a fatal collision killed a San Francisco man, police said that the intersection remained the site of an investigation into the crash.

It was 5:22 p.m. Wednesday when a 90-year-old SF resident since identified by the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office as David Grinberg was struck at the intersection of Baker and Fell Streets, police said Thursday morning.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, a 28-year-old woman "was driving down the street when she contacted" Grinberg.

Grinberg was transported to an area hospital, and died at 11:30 that night, the Chron reports.

Additional details on the crash, including which party had the traffic signal, were not provided by police. The SFPD did confirm, however, that the driver had not been arrested following the fatal collision.

As of 6:22 a.m. Thursday, police said via Twitter that the intersection remained the site of an investigation into the crash. At 6:57, police tweeted that the scene had been cleared and that traffic to the area was no longer disrupted.

San Francisco's recent heat wave is now San Francisco's deadly heat wave, officials said Wednesday, tracing the demise of three residents to the city's record-breaking temperatures. Add to that a release Thursday from the San Mateo County Coroner saying that three more people died there as a result of the heat — and the death toll may rise as more reports come in from other counties.

The San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office announced that three elderly people died due to “probable” heat-related causes this weekend, the Ex reports.

All three were born in the 1920s or 1930s, lived alone, and died at home, the ME's office says.

None of the deaths were preceded by calls to 911, putting to rest worries that any of the dead were among the 28 life-threatening calls made over a weekend so short on EMTs that fire engine crews had to wait 20 minutes or more for an ambulance to arrive.

San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault told the Chronicle that we can add to that list Patrick Henry of Pacifica, 90; Ernesto Demesa of Daly City, 79; and Loraine Christiansen of Millbrae, 95. Demesa and Henry both lived in homes without air conditioning, Demesa alone and Henry with his wife. Christiansen lived in an assisted living facility.

As noted by NBC Bay Area, "People of advanced ages living independently are the most vulnerable in extreme conditions," saying that the ME's office recommends "well checks and frequent contact to ensure friends, family, and neighbors are healthy and not in need of assistance."

When contacted by the Chron regarding the deaths, Department of Public Health spokeswoman Rachael Kagan said “We will look deeply into these incidents and see what we can learn about improving outreach to elderly and vulnerable populations."

On Tuesday, Supervisors London Breed, Aaron Peskin and Jane Kim called for a hearing on the city's preparation for the heat wave, which the Chron described as "sluggish."

“It is deeply concerning that in a city with San Francisco’s resources, at least three preventable deaths happened as a result of the heat wave — and many more people were affected in non-fatal ways,” Peskin says.

“We will be asking the tough questions to make sure San Francisco is not caught flat-footed again."

And well he should: As previously reported, climate scientists are suggesting that the recent heat wave could be the first of many, as continued climate change makes for conditions leading to extreme temperatures like last weekend's.

"It makes more sense to ask whether global warming made an event more likely," UCLA climate scientist Dr. Daniel Swain says. "And in the case of an unprecedented extreme heat wave, the answer these days is usually yes."

A 17-year-old girl who was hiking near Land's End was killed Thursday night, after she apparently lost her footing and fell to the rocks below.

Corte Madera resident Victoria La Rocca was hiking with another teen and adult on a trail near the Legion of Honor, ABC 7 reports, when she apparently stumbled on the trail and fell over the cliffside around 6 p.m. Thursday evening.

“They were probably walking along a path or something
and we’re not sure if she slipped,” Fire Battalion Chief Denise Newman told the Ex.

The Chron reports that La Rocca fell about 50 feet and "landed on the rocks just east of Lands End," a remote spot that "made it difficult for rescue swimmers to reach La Rocca, prompting emergency crews to use a personal watercraft to get to her."

"When we arrived, we tried to get as close as possible, but there was a lot of terrain," Newman told NBC Bay Area. "Beach Patrol, which is the lifeguard at Ocean Beach, they had their Jet-ski and came on the water side and were able to find the victim."

La Rocca “had multiple injuries and fractures, she was barely breathing when we got to her,” Newman says. “She fell all the way down to the water so therefore she was in the water and was kind of cold.”

Rescue crews were able to eventually secure her to a flotation device, KRON 4 reports, and managed to get her to China Beach. She was pronounced dead as an ambulance transported her to the hospital.

La Rocca was a student at San Francisco's St. Ignatius High School, CBS 5 reports. Parents of La Rocca's classmates recieved an email from the school early Friday, saying “We mourn her loss and ask you to pray for her entire family and friends...Please keep Tori and her entire family in your prayers in their hour of need.”

Traffic north of the Golden Gate Bridge was snarled for hours Sunday night, after a motorist's crash caused their vehicle to burst into flames.

ABC 7 reports that the incident occurred at around 7:20 p.m. Sunday, on southbound 101 just north of Spencer Avenue in Sausalito.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, according to KRON 4. What we do know so far is that a driver swerved up onto a sharply angled embankment near the Golden Gate Bridge, then slammed into an exit sign. The vehicle erupted into flames after that, apparently as a result of the impact.

The driver, who CBS 5 reports was the only occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene. Fire crews and officers with the California Highway Patrol fought the blaze, a struggle that closed several lanes of the freeway until early Monday morning.

A young Oakland boy was killed Tuesday afternoon after he was struck by an AC Transit bus as he reportedly chased a ball into the street.

KRON 4 reports that two-year-old Jeremiah Esera ran into the intersection of 35th and Penniman Avenues at around 2 p.m. Tuesday, and was struck by AC Transit Bus #54, which the Chron reports was headed north toward Merritt College.

Esera was pronounced dead at the scene, and was, says Oakland Police Department Deputy Chief Darin White, "killed on impact."

"I heard mom cry, 'Help me, help me!' That's when I ran," neighbor William Roa told ABC 7, which reports that Esera was playing outside an apartment complex on 35th Avenue before the collision.

"They said he was running into the street to catch a ball," neighbor Paula Miller told ABC 7.

"I'm heartbroken. I was just speaking to his sister right before I went to the doctors. But kids play on the street all the time."

In an emailed statement, AC Transit spokesperson Robert Lyles says that they "extend our deepest condolences" to Esera's family, and says that the transit agency "will continue to work closely with the Oakland Police Department as they investigate the circumstances of this event."

Lyles says that the bus driver "has been with the District since 1999" and "is fully cooperating with the police investigation."

"Standard protocol requires that the operator undergo drug and alcohol screening," Lyles says, noting that "HIPPA regulations preclude AC Transit from releasing the names or conditions of individuals involved in any active investigation."

Speaking with ABC 7, Lyles noted that nearby construction slowed traffic in the area, and says that "there is nothing to suggest in preliminary information that speed was a factor" in this case.

According to Lyles, AC Transit is providing "therapeutic counseling to the Operator and staff members adversely affected by this truly tragic event." In addition, the Chron reports that an Oakland Fire Department chaplain was on the scene Tuesday to counsel witnesses and residents.

Though Esera's family has declined to speak with the media, they did release a statement Tuesday night, saying that "Jeremiah was a very rambunctious, lively two year old who loved to run dance and play."

"He was always helpful and loving showering his family with his sweet hugs and sloppy-face wet kisses. He will be missed dearly."

The driver of a tanker truck was killed this morning, following a dramatic, fiery crash on Interstate 880.

Bay City News reports that the driver of the big rig was killed "instantly" in the crash, which occurred on 880 in San Leandro just before 4 a.m. near the Davis Street exit.

Following the crash, the truck immediately burst into flames, witnesses told the the California Highway Patrol. It's unclear what the truck was carrying, and a CHP spokesperson couldn't comment on that detail as of Wednesday morning.

At present, it's still unclear what caused the crash, according to the CHP. Other than the big-rig driver, who has yet to be identified, no other motorists reported injuries in the incident.

A man riding a scooter on 101 in San Francisco was killed Wednesday night, when he fell from the the highway to the street far below.

According to California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Vu Williams, the scooter rider was "making a sweeping left turn" onto 101 north just south of the Ninth Street exit at 11:23 p.m. Wednesday.

As he made the turn on this elevated stretch of roadway, he apparently lost control and struck the guardrail. The man then fell from the highway to the street below, a distance of around 40 feet.

The man, who has yet to be publicly identified by the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office and was described only as "in his 30s," was pronounced dead at the scene, Williams says.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no other damage or injuries were reported as a result of his fall, Williams says.

Elderly Man's 'Medical Emergency' Causes Multi-Car Mission Crash

One driver died, others were injured.

SF News

collision

crash

fatality

mission

sfpd

Eve Batey

A man injured in a multi-vehicle Mission District crash has died, but police still aren't sure if it was the collision, or something else, that killed him.

It was 5:23 p.m. Sunday when a man the Chron describes as "elderly" drove into oncoming traffic at the intersection of 18th and Guerrero Streets.

At least four vehicles crashed as a result, ABC 7 reports. According to San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Carlos Manfredi, the man had suffered an unspecified "medical emergency," likely the reason he drove into traffic in the first place.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, but Manfredi says police still don't know if the man's death was caused by the injuries he sustained in the crash or by the medical emergency, itself.

“It is unclear if he died due to the collision, or the medical condition,” Manfredi told the Ex.

As of publication time, the San Francisco Medical Examiner's office had not publicly identified the dead man, nor did they have any additional details on his cause of death.

KTVU reports that the driver and passenger of the vehicle the deceased man struck suffered minor injuries, and "two others involved were treated for non-life threatening injuries, and are expected to be OK."

All Three Alleged Doughnut-Doers Killed In Fiery SoMa Crash Were Visiting SF From The East Bay

"I just feel like they shouldn't have been pursuing them in the first place," one victim's sister says.

SF News

CHP

collision

east bay

fatality

soma

Eve Batey

Three men who were allegedly doing doughnuts in SoMa before fleeing from police, crashing, and dying Saturday evening have been identified — and a family member of one of the victims says the cops might be to blame for their death.

You likely remember the story: a California Highway Patrol spokesperson says that they received reports of doughnut-doing at Fifth and Brannan Streets at around 9:20 p.m. Saturday. As officers arrived the driver of the alleged doughnut-doing vehicle (a white, 4-door Chevy SS sedan, a witness told SFist) "sped off" and ran many red lights.

Though CHP says that the officer then ceased the pursuit "because he thought it was too dangerous," the driver of the Chevy continued, striking a cab at Ninth and Brannan and bursting into flames.

The taxi driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover, CHP says. Two men were trapped in the Chevy and died in the blaze, The third was ejected on impact, and was also dead at the scene.

ABC7 reports that the three men killed were Pittsburg High School student Roland Zanie, 27-year-old Bay Point man Gene Mollique Jr., and 31-year-old David Hamilton III, of Antioch.

In an odd note, ABC7 reports in an earlier story, "Zanie's stepmother says his father is a deputy sheriff with the San Francisco Sheriff's Department." A spokesperson with the SF Sheriff's department could not confirm that detail with SFist.

All three were reportedly heading home from Super Bowl City's NFL Experience when witnesses say that they were spotted doing doughnuts and racing "a blue Viper or Corvette and a black Charger" at speeds exceeding 80 miles an hour.

According to Zanie's sister, who spoke with ABC7, the police bear some of the blame in this case.

"I just feel like they shouldn't have been pursuing them in the first place," she said, "with the city being so crowded at that moment."

Zanie's best friend takes a different approach, and holds the driver responsible.

"If you take a person on a high-speed chase, honestly you're being selfish," he says.

"You're not thinking about the people that are in the car with you."

Nearly a month after a man was shot and killed while riding BART, it appears the police are no nearer to finding his killer. Will a cash reward help develop a lead to the gunman? That's what one the transit agency is now banking on.

As you likely recall, back on January 9 at 7:49 p.m., a man later identified as 19-year-old Antioch resident Carlos Misael Funez-Romero was shot and killed on a BART train at the West Oakland Station.

According to witnesses, a "disheveled looking man," got on the train at either Rockridge or MacArthur station, then pulled out a gun and shot Funez-Romero multiple times as he sat next to the train door, before fleeing on foot into the West Oakland night.

Since then, reports from BART police have been confusing: The shooting wasn't random! Wait, maybe it was! The shooter and the victim never interacted! Oh, wait, they did! In fact, KRON4 reported Friday, investigators still don't know "what the motive was for the shooting and don’t know what kind of a relationship the suspect and Funez-Romero had, if any."

The issue was complicated when it was revealed that many of the cameras that appear to be mounted on BART's cars are actually fake, including those that might have caught the incident on tape. But they do say that these photos depict the shooter:

And now, via press release, BART has announced that the transit agency is now "offering a reward of up to $10,000.00 through Oakland Crime Stoppers."

According to BART, the money is yours "if a tip leads to an arrest of the murder suspect."

“Someone in the public knows who this guy is and we need their help to bring him to justice,” said BART Police Chief Kenton Rainey says.

“This is an active investigation and detectives are following up on all leads.”

Know something about the shooting? (It doesn't even have to be $10,000 worth, as anything will obviously help BART's crack team of investigators solve the case.) If you do, you can submit an anonymous tip at 510-464-7011, contact BART investigators directly at 510-464-7040, or call Oakland Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
