As the month of June approaches, a mix of cologne, sweat, joy, poppers, hair molding clay, meth clouds, mixed drinks, guilt and delicious tourism dollars will fill the air as the LGBT Pride Parade celebrates 40 years of homosexuality... and then some. To get a jump start on the festivities, be sure to clear your calendar this Saturday for the SF Pride's 40 & Fabulous Benefit 2010. Hosted by Tita Aida and Pollo del Mar.

Saturday night will feature music (care of the Lesbian Gay Chorus of San Francisco, DJs Robbie Martin and Edaj), mingling, a buffet dinner (if you must), buckets and buckets of booze (Smirnof Vodka for the gays and Bud Light for the sapphically-inclined), a live and silent auction, and more. Plus, the party will take place at the sleek Contemporary Jewish Museum, which is fitting since Jews and gays are the chocolate and peanut butter of minorities; they go together famously.

Sure, tickets are $65. It's a bit steep for some of you, perhaps. But, hey, it involves free dinner and drink, and you're sure to spend at least $65 on any given night at a tacky Castro bar, right? Right.

by Rachel Brodsky

The age of Prohibition (1920-1933) was a relatively unsuccessful period in American history where the American government sought to ban all alcoholic beverages from being exported, imported or sold. And though the 20's are remembered for paving the way of the Jazz Age, Women's Suffrage and the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald, the government's Prohibition of alcohol catalyzed a seedy underbelly of organized crime, speakeasies and liquor smuggling.

Although the massively unsuccessful Prohibition law was repealed years ago, the skulking nature of speakeasies has morphed into a trendier aspect of today's bar culture. SF's own Bourbon and Branch is known for its series of secret doors and sexy vintage appeal.

This Wednesday night, Bourbon & Branch owner Brian Sheehy joins with author and former owner of Pierre's, Dick Boyd and marijuana theorist/activist Michael Whitson at CounterPULSE to discuss the shared similarities of prohibitions past to the current marijuana legalization debate. Considering New Jersey's recent legalization of medical marijuana, not to mention California's herb victory today, this discussion is not to be missed.

Now that autumn is in the air, the Mission is too clammy and cold, the Avenues are too foggy, and the Marina is too the Marina. So, why not spend your Thursday night in the lovely, twinkly, high-rise building-y downtown area. It simply crackles at night. And it's chic. And it has a good mix of San Francisco ilk. And there's no better venue than 111 Minna, who will be hosting some of the city's best gastronomic sweet treats.

Starting at 7 p.m. at 111 Minna, Sugar Rush: A Benefit for Spark's Youth Apprenticeship Programs will feature desert tastings from such luminous eateries as Boulevard, Chez Panisse, Michael Mina, Range, Recchiuti Confections, Sibby's Cupcakery, and Humphry Slocombe.

Tickets range from $50 to $60, which is a total deal. In addition to the artisan sugar rush you'll feel at this place, you ticket price goes to Spark.

What is Spark? Well, it's billed as "the only program in the nation addressing the dropout crisis by re-engaging at-risk middle school students in their education with individualized, hands-on apprenticeships."

If you care about today's youth and/or the care of your sweet tooth, you will come to Sugar Rush.

Hanging out in the SOMA arrondissement this evening? Yes? Well, then, why not stop by Electric Works on Eighth Street for a photo exhibit by local photographer (and MOREboy) Brandon Norris. Known for his "outlandish and often debaucherous club photography, Norris has created a new body of work whose cast of characters is all too familiar" (that is to say, he snaps the shots of drunkards at Booty Call in the Castro), tonight "Norris ditches the constructed sets, the props, and the costumes in an attempt to expand on the deeper soul of his subjects."

You can check out some of his work at brandonnorrisphotography.com.

This evening's opening reception will also boast a performance by FACT/SF, a San Francisco-based contemporary dance-theater group. Which should prove interesting. And, sure, the place might be littered with stinky alteragays, but, God willing, there might be a little free wine to sooth the senses, not to mention the fine photography of Brandon Norris.

Saturday's Great American Food and Music Festival looked like it had win written all over it: ' Guy Fieri, alpha-male grilling fanboy Bobby Flay!
However, according to the unfortunate folks who attended Saturday's food and easy-listening gathering at Shoreline Amphitheater (who vented about the long lines, lack of food, computer snafus, and drink ticket nonsense) the event was, well, a shitshow.

For example, there's this:

"Jeez! A class of pre-schoolers could have done a better job organizing this festival than the producers: Serious Eats and The Agency Group.. If this event had happened in Japan, the head organizers (that's you, SeriousEats.com!!!) would have already committed suicide, and that's with 4 hours still left in the event (not suggesting that the festival organizers need to take such drastic measures)."

And this:

"...this was a crazy bad event. (which i had been looking forward to since it was first blogged about on serious eats.) i have never had such an atrocious experience at any public venue previously -- and i mean never."

Due to the erection of the new Transbay Terminal, Varnish Fine Art will be smashed to smithereens. Alas. Varnish Gallery, for those of you who don't know, is fantastic. The downtown wine bar/art gallery played host to readings by "jt leroy" and Karl Soehnlein, biweekly performances by Davies Symphony Hall darling Mason Bates (DJ Masonic), SFist's very first party, and provided lots and lots of free booze to your editor.

Open by Jennifer Rogers and Kerri Stephens back in 2003 and using the remains of a brewery built just after the 1906 earthquake, the result was a spiffy space that included a main gallery, mezzanine gallery and wine bar that combined fine art with a community vibe.

Anyway, it seems that that some city folks are knocking down the building soon and want them out by September -- word is that said city folk aren't being too nice about it either -- so they're having a fun going-away party with musicians, speakers, performers, and more. The list so far includes spoken word by the Dead Kennedys frontman and activist Jello Biafra, recent Vice Presidential candidate and former SF Supe President Matt Gonzalez, newsman and Argonaut Editor Warren Hinckle, music by Burnt House and DJ Evil Justin, live screenprinting by Political Gridlock and The Firehouse. But you don't have to be a raging male, commie-pinko to come -- oh, we kid, boys. Kinda -- all are welcome at next Friday's Varnish Gallery farewell.

Unmade Beds looks to be a very colorful and whimsical indie flick. "When a wide-eyed young Spaniard arrives in London searching for the father who abandoned him at birth, he lands in the creative hotbed of an underground squat filled with a multicultural collective of expats and colorful free spirits. The squat is also home to a beautiful Belgian haunted by memories of a recent failed love affair and seeking to restore her faith in romance. Separately they pursue momentous encounters and romantic adventures in an exquisitely tender tale of modern youth adrift in a foreign city."

Director/writer Alexis Dos Santos is expected to attend, along with lead actors Déborah François and Fernando Tielve.

7 p.m. // Castro Theatre (429 Castro St) // $12.50

The Closing Night Party will follow the film at Mezzanine. Exotic drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served, and music inspired by Unmade Beds will be played.

9:30 p.m. // Mezzanine (444 Jessie St) // $60-125 (includes film)

Anderson made a name for herself in the arts scene in New York in the 70s, and rose to international fame in 1980 with the song "O Superman" (a clip of which follows, post-jump). In recent years, she's been performing original works like her adaptation of Moby-Dick and, more recently, Homeland, which combine elements of spoken word, dance and music. She continues to be a prominent force in experimental music, and last year married her longtime companion and fellow musician, Lou Reed.

Tonight at 8:00, the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts will open their new exhibition, transPOP: Korea Vietnam Remix, with a big party involving Campari cocktails and Thomas’ Apartment, the LA-based-Vietnamese-American-alterna-rock phenom.

That’s a lot of hypens, I know, but it’s entirely appropriate for this exhibition. Just look at the title. First: “trans,” which means transcendent, in several senses but most of all transnational; and “POP,” which refers both to pop culture and Pop Art. The second half of the name, “Korea Vietnam Remix,” alludes to the 16 featured artists — all of whom are from Vietnam, Korea, or their respective communities in the United States — and their works, which explore the historic and current relationships between the three countries in terms of pop culture and using Pop Art strategies.

That three-way relationship has been fraught at times and friendly at others. The countries are relatively far apart on the Asian continent, but they were brought together by their common invader, the United States. The Vietnam War opened a path for tens of thousands of Koreans to come to Vietnam — a diaspora that paved the way for Vietnam’s “Korean Wave” in popular culture during the ensuing peace. The works themselves employ a wide range of techniques and media, from paint to digital video and everything in between.

The curators are Viet Le, who is an independent artist and curator, and Yong Soon Min, who is an associate professor in the Studio Art department at UC Irvine. The works were previously shown in Seoul, South Korea and at Irvine.

If you come to the party tonight, admission is free for members and $15 to the general public. If you can’t, though, never fear: the works will be on display until March 15. For further insight, you might want to check out this review of the show in Modern Painters and this review of its Irvine iteration.

Therefore, their stellar installation of movement-triggered sound environments created by a live-amplified skateboard railing will be screened live at the event from Canada. The rest of the show will consist of live installations as planned. Diana Burgoyne will be "enveloping the audience with live drawings that activate sounds into a rising cacophonic score," and locals Beno + Minnie will layer vocal and percussion textures and melodies with "video and projection interventions."
