Apparently, Al is a little upset that the Raiders once again didn't have a winning season and blames himself Lane. He is also pretty miffed that Lane talked him into trading Randy Moss. It's a little unclear as to what is going on as ESPN and the Chron have differing accounts but it appears that Al is trying to get Lane to quit so he doesn't have to fire him.

Many, many people want to know just what, pray tell, goes on inside the mind of Barry Bonds. Or maybe just a handful do. Who's to say? And much like the fog-laced hills of San Francisco, he is a complicated man of mystery. Or perhaps he's just a greedy, self-centered prick. (Deep down, who isn't? And remember, some people strongly defend the guy, like ESPN's Jemele Hill did just today.) Again, who's to say?...

Poor Cal-- so close yet so far. Our theory about what happened is that the idea of Cal having the #1 ranked team in the country was so crazy that even in this year (decade, actually) of sports craziness, the God of Sports deemed that just too crazy and set the upset in motion. Of course, we're also looking at the Rockies in the World Series, so whadda we know?

We totally missed this, but yesterday was the 10-year anniversary of probably the most famous home run in Giants history since "the Giants Win the Pennant! The Giants Win the Pennant" home run, the Brian Johnson home run. Sure, there's been more important one's and there's all those Barry home runs, but nothing brings a smile to a Giants fan more than that home run. How could it not? It was an extra innings game deep in an improbable pennant race against the hated Dodgers, hit by some random dude just acquired a few weeks before, and it came right after the late and great Rod Beck's derring-do in getting out of a bases loaded no-out jam. It was an epic ending to an epic game in an epic season. Well, except for the end of it. Since everybody else is reminiscing, we thought we would too.

Ah, 1979…"I Will Survive" topped the charts and Bette Midler gave us "the Rose" (love, it is a river, you know). ESPN came into existence, the kids were into "Captain Caveman," and Muni got a new command center. Some things may have changed and gone away, but some things stay the same. Like Muni’s command center-- it hasn't been updated since those carefree days of Studio 54 and New Wave.

ESPN.com's Uni Watch column today has a story about uniform concepts that never saw the light of day as they got shelved before they became official. Some of them are God-awful but some of them are way better than the eventual uniform. Anyways, the column brought up something that we have long since forgotten about, probably because it was such an awful idea that we (and we're guessing a lot of you) forgot on purpose because it was so bad. That is the announcement in 1991 that the logo on the 49ers helmet was going to go from the SF in the red oval to just a goofy type treatment of the numbers. It was awful. So awful, it lasted like a day before Eddie D And Carmen Policy issued a mea culpa and banished the thing before it ever became official.

Tomorrow, ESPN will take a break determining whether Tom Brady is more Now than LeBron is and feature a town hall type thingy in San Francisco on the issue of Barry Bonds and the Hallowed Record. Despite ESPN's increasing descent into annoying shtick and hype, this should be pretty interesting as it's being hosted by "Outside the Lines" host Bob Ley, one of the few ESPN "personalities" with any integrity left. It's supposed to be a discussion on all things Barry, including race, Bud Selig's complicitness in the mess, how tainted the record is, and a whole bunch of other things. The panel will feature a bunch of writers including ESPN's excellent Buster Olney and "Game of Shadows" Lance Williams as well as Barry's ex teammates Kirk Rueter and Ellis Burks as well as Dusty. Jeff Kent will not be participating.

Friend of SFist David Lilienstein was out in the Cove yesterday and took this photo of one of the denizens. If you want to read what it was like out there, check out Jim Caple's excellent write up in ESPN.com and if you want to see more photos, you can see the Flickr stream here and SFGate's phenomenal pictures here.

with this one for his own blog -- the Chronicle Local News Blog gleefully reports that, at Sunday's Celebrity All-Star game at AT&T Park, former college baseball player Mayor Gavin Newsom:

We have to admit to becoming positively stoked about all the All Star Festivities these days, especially as tonight is the big Home Run Derby. Local sports talk radio is all over it, ESPN is here, Fox has been promoting the hell out of it, and Jay Z is even throwing a party for it (and hey, Hovah, if you happen to be reading this and want to help hype it by having an on the spot reporter, just drop us a line). And we're not the only ones excited-- reports say that the All Star Game is bringing the city big bucks.

A's 2 Red Sox 0- Before we begin our recap, we'd like to give our condolences to Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson as it appears Kawen is no more. Or was that Ote? Eh, who knows. Anyways, the A's mojo once again kept on keeping on as they have now taken two straight from the Sox of Red, shutting out one of the best lineups in baseball. And, yes, they beat Dice K who, despite everything said on ESPN, is a mere mortal. The pitcher who outdueled him was Lenny DiNardo who pitched a three hitter. Now, you might be wondering who DiNardo is. Well, he was formerly of the Red Sox as of last year and has pitched in the A's bullpen this year. He is also not from New Jersey. But with all the injuries going around, DiNardo got the call to start games and in usual A's fashion, is now pitching better than anyone ever thought possible. Also in the good news column for A's fans is Eric Chavez once again going yard and possibly saying goodbye to his season long slump.

To get you psyched for tonight's game, here's some news on the Warriors front:

You know, if last fall wasn't exactly a great time for Bay Area sports, this spring, especially this weekend, has to be considered a great moment. We listened to Gary Radnich this morning and he was complaining about not having anything to complain about.

Wow-- this is pretty shocking: Pulitzer Prize winning author David Halberstam was killed today in a three-car accident in Menlo Park. The accident occurred at westbound Bayfront Expressway and Willow Road near the Dumbarton Bridge and according to authorities, he was one of the passengers.

OK, so we've gotten some flak about picking the Warriors to take down the Dallas Mavericks in six games in the opening round of the NBA's western Conference playoffs. We'll be the first to admit it's a homer pick, because, well, we do really want the Warriors to win, and we'll be the first to admit it.

But our pie in the sky has an empirical basis. Here's five reasons why the Warriors will beat the Mavs in this playoff series.

Revel in it Bay Area NBA fans: this year the Western Conference playoffs mean something, because for the first time in 13 years, the hometown Warriors are part of the party.

So let's take a quick drive down the lane and see what the Warriors are going to have to deal with as they knife their way to the Finals. (Yeah, we know, but just roll with the sentiment. It's been 13 years and there's an abundance of pent-up enthusiasm to be dissipated.)
