Newsom Sightings Reported as Mayor Returns to Work

Ever since Gavin Newsom dropped out of the California governor's race, and ran off to Hawaii without telling his staff, residents are dying to get a peek at our mayor post-wound lick.

Feinstein : Will She Or Won't She?

Now that Gavin Newsom has dropped out of the governor's race (welcome back to work, Gavin!), rumors are swirling that Senator Dianne Feinstein might take a stab as the new "it" Democratic candidate. Or not. Who's to say for sure. This speculation pops up all the time with DiFi.

After Gov. Race Withdrawal, Newsom Takes Hawaiian Vacation

Where does one go to figure out what to do with the rest of their life? If you're former gubernatorial candidate Gavin Newsom, you go to Hawaii. CBS 5's Joe Vazquez has first word that the San Francisco Mayor "left the city Tuesday to spend the rest of the week in Hawaii following his decision to drop out of the California governor's race."

Quote of the Month: Newsom On Taking the Bait

While everyone and their pet goldfish thinks they're the only ones to have predicted that SF Mayor Gavin Newsom would withdraw his bid for California governor -- in related news, we predict you will have a bowel movement within the next 24 hours! -- this has been ancient watercooler talk for months. Why, just last week, if you recall, Newsom not only denied but chided reporters for having the gall to question him about it.

Breaking: Newsom Drops Out of Governor's Race

Newsom's out. Here is the official press release.

Rumor Mill: Newsom Dropping Out of Governor's Race?

Speculation time, folks! Los Angeles politics blog Mayor Sam's Sister City reports that SF Mayor Gavin Newsom will (allegedly!) announce his withdrawl from the California gubernatorial race this afternoon. Mayor Sam says:

I'm Staying And You're Gonna Love Me, Cries Newsom

Trailing behind Jerry Brown in both the polls and fundraising, one might assume SF Mayor Gavin Newsom would bow out at this point. Not so. Even though rumors are swirling -- swirling! -- that Gavin will either a) drop out of the gubernatorial race to focus on bettering San Francisco, or b) leave the race and instead run for Lieutenant Governor on Brown's ticket, this just isn't the case. At least, so says Team Newsom.

Pick The Red Newsom Campaign Logo

Taking a cue from American Idol, team Newsom is having a contest where you, the voter, get to decide which logo will represent Gavin Newsom's crapshoot for Governor of California.

Scene From a Clinton-Newsom Gathering

This begs for some sort of poll. Here you go:

Newsweek to Newsom: Implosion Impending

Topped off with one of the harshest headlines aimed at Gavin Newsom yet ("The Impending Implosion of CA Gov Hopeful Gavin Newsom"), Newsweek scribe Daniel Stone says that the San Francisco Mayor's current white-hot streak in the relatively nascent gubernatorial race is in danger of cooling off. Fast.

Meg Whitman = Bad Citizen

Well, well, well. It looks like some pesky reporter over at the Sacto Bee got snoopy and discovered that Former E-Bay CEO and current Republican gubernatorial candidate, Meg Whitman, somehow managed to forget to vote for like the entirety of her whole life...

Oh oh. It's on.

Meg Whitman Officially Announces Her Gubernatorial Bid

If elected, the former eBay CEO -- a bigot who, at best, considers the homosexuals second-class citizens, or at least that's what she would lead the public to believe -- will cut state spending "by another $15 billion," prune California's current state work force "by 17 percent," and further the stereotype that female Republicans must sport garish blonde hair in order to be successful. Welcome to the race, Meg!

Bill Clinton Backs Newsom

While some are wildly conspiracy theorizing that Mayor Gavin Newsom will bow out of the gubernatorial race, former POTUS Bill Clinton just gave Gav his official seal of approval. That's right, Clinton has backed Newsom's bid for the Democratic nomination for California governor. If you recall, Newsom was one of Hillary Clinton's biggest supporters during her failed presidential campaign. The Clintons, it seems, are returning the favor.

Newsom Eating Flautas In Mexico Today

While Gavin Newsom's daily itinerary is typically (and aggressively) detail-free, today's public schedule is brimming with loads of information, stuff you might find during a showcase showdown on the Price Is Right. Today, according to SFBG, Mayor Newsom is relaxing in high style in Mexico "on a PG&E-sponsored trip that has nothing to do with San Francisco." (Aside: we are so jealous. We haven't had a vacation in eons, especially one that involved us not having to think about the city of San Francisco every other second. Lucky bastard.)

Last night, SF Mayor Gavin Newsom "officially kicked off his campaign" for governor of California 2010. That is to say, you'll see even less of Newsom over the next year or so. If that's even possible. Which is fine with us. Because "Mayor Nathan Ballard" has a nice ring to it. Oh, come now. Ballard is a funny guy. Period. And a smartypants too. And that's good enough for us.

Newsom Throws $100,000 Block Party

While trolling over in Sacramento this past weekend at the Democratic convention, Mayor Gavin Newsom, according to Matier et Ross, threw a $100,000 block party. Would you expect anything less? Anyway, the possible future governor of California spared little expense, featuring 1,500 reusable aluminum water bottles, embossed with Gavin's name; plenty of nibbles and booze; and a performance by (the notoriously prickly) Wyclef Jean. Even Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson made an cameo to declare the"next governor of California." (Booze? block party? hip hop? How very urban of you, Gavin.) The bill, M&R go on to report, was collected from sponsors such as AT&T, PG&E., the California Teachers Association, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 6, and Greentech California. In related news, Siebel doesn't seem to be showing yet.

In a move most everyone expected, Lt. Gov. John Garamendi announced this morning that he'll run for governor in 2010. The Democrat has been trying for years to get in that office, starting with his first attempt back in 1982. Considered a "B-list" candidate, he faces such strong (not to mention younger) candidates as Attorney General Jerry Brown, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.
