Doing Your Constitutional Duty

The first of the Bay Area alt-weeklies to do their "Best of the Bay" contest is the corporate one, SF Weekly. And since one of the categories is Best Blog, we'd totally be flattered and honored if you would uphold your constitutional duty by voting for us. We can't really say we'd give you anything for voting for us, but we will tell you that everytime you do, an angel get's their wings. Contest ends May 4th so go, go, go! more ›

TV on the Radio

TV on the Radio

Once again, little ole SFist is going to be on ABC 7 during their 6 o'clock broadcast. Somehow, they think our whiny, silly post about Gary Delagnes criticizing Gen X is worthy of a story. Don't watch it to see us or some professor try to pontificate on generational differences (badly, we might admit) but watch it because Delagnes not only clarifies his remarks but goes on to discuss just why it is that we have trouble putting more cops on the street. Considering how relevant the issue is, not just with handling crime but in emergency preparedness, it just might be worth a looksee. more ›

Happy Birfday, Alex Tourk

Happy Birfday, Alex Tourk

If Alex Tourk had a MySpace page, he would have moved Gavin from the #1 spot on his Top 8 after he heard about the affair, and deleted Gavin as a friend. So Gavin trying to be nice on Alex's birthday was like Gavin trying to re-friend Alex, and being denied. Gavin's gonna rot in Alex's hypothetical friend request box for all of eternity because they aren't even RealSpace friends anymore. more ›

Because we here at SFist are here to serve, we need to find out how better to serve you. So we've developed a very quick survey to check in with our readers. We hope to use the information to improve the site, from developing our content areas to picking promotional and advertising partners. If you have a few minutes (it's very short), we'd appreciate it if you could answer. more ›

Tales of Parking Woes

Tales of Parking Woes

It's SFist Question Time

Gavin might not want to hear a bunch of questions from people, but we do. So we've developed a very quick survey to check in with our readers. We hope to use the information to improve the site, from developing our content areas to picking promotional and advertising partners. If you have a few minutes (it's very short), we'd appreciate it if you could answer. more ›

SFist on TV

SFist on TV

So we're moving up, media wise, as our little story about Peter Ragone and his sock puppet (now officially dubbed "SFistGate") will be airing sometime a little after six on ABC 7. How big is this story? Dan Noyes is giving it the special I-Team treatment. Actually, we know enough of this story to know it's going to be a good one. more ›

SFist on MySpace

SFist on MySpace

>Hey kids, did you know that we have a MySpace page of our very own? Yep, it's true-- SFist is on MySpace. It's not the most exciting corner of the MySpace world but it's ours and we're just gosh-darn proud of it. And maybe one day, it'll be a bit more exciting. In fact, sometime this week we'll start sending out updates to all those people in our little network. more ›

It's a Hard Knock Life in California

It's a Hard Knock Life in California

And today's study unleashed upon the world concerns the chances the kids have of succeeding in life. According to said study, kids today in California don't have that much of a chance to succeed. Out of fifty states, we come in thirty-fourth. Ouch. That's way behind #1 state, Virginia but much better than lowly New Mexico which comes in at #50. Ha ha, sucks to be you. And here's our little questions-- how much credibility can you give a study that puts a state that came this close to electing George Allen as Senator as #1? more ›

SFist on the Radio Again

SFist on the Radio Again

We'll be on the radio tonight real late. Like past midnight late. So join us as we fight off sleep and three cups of coffee and a trying day blogging. We're fun when we're delirious too—we have no control over what we are saying and have the occasional acid flashback. So if you hear us muttering something about the walls, that'll be the reason why more ›

A Sort of Homecoming

A Sort of Homecoming

As we've said before, we're ensconced on the East Coast visiting family as like everyone else, we're not from here. It's always kind of entertaining going back east because as a San Franciscan, we somehow take the role as the representative from the (Non War ravaged) Baghdad by the Bay. It's like we're ambassadors. Or avatars. We are, for all intents in purposes, San Francisco. more ›

SFist Gives Thanks

SFist Gives Thanks

It's Thanksgiving tomorrow, which means a time to give thanks for all those things one gives thanks to. It's just how we celebrate the one-time settlers and Indians had a nice time of it before we took all their land away. Yay holidays! more ›

We're Going Through Changes

We're Going Through Changes

Hi, it's Jon, your editor with some SFist news to explain some of the new changes to which you are seeing now. Yes, it's true, we have a new design. Pretty spiffy, ain't it? Call it SFist 2.0 if you will. Our corporate overlords are trying out new looks for the -ists and we're one of the first ones to get the change. But, as all of you who survived those days that we old-timers like to refer as "the Boom" will tell you, nothing ever goes smoothly the first time through so if things suddenly weird or buggy or messed up, you'll know. more ›

CHOW Down

CHOW Down

We had our excuses (Hangar One Thai Boxer cocktails, delectable nibbles, interesting gossip opps, and supreme people watching) for staying for the entire CHOW launch party at Bix. It was fascinating and delish, which is always a wonderful combo! more ›

Greetings and Salutations

Greetings and Salutations

Hi, this is Jon and I'll be your new editor. Some of you might know me as the reactionary one, others of you might know me as the unsophisticated one, but most of you know me as the non-Rita one. I usually write about sports and politics with the occasional rant and review thrown in for good measure. As for where I sit on all the great social and cultural questions of the age, in an effort to show editorial transparency, I will admit that I go Christina over Britney, N'Sync over the Backstreet Boys, young Elvis over fat Elvis, Nirvana over Pearl Jam, the LoTR trilogy over the Star Wars trilogy, like both the English and American " the Office" equally, and think cats and dogs should just get along. Oh, and my favorite Beatle is John. more ›

SFist Editorial: Edward Champion on Muni

SFist Editorial: Edward Champion on Muni

It was a Wednesday morning and I was waiting for the bus. If you're a nine-to-fiver, you know the drill. Swelling crowds, contending with the inconsistent transit schedule, the oratorical dialogue with the cold foggy air. Will the bus come? Is there a chance in hell you'll actually make it to work on time? more ›

Dear Mr Ford: We Go First Person On Your Ass

Dear Mr Ford: We Go First Person On Your Ass

So, I'm on the N Judah this morning, around 8:45. I'm seated when I feel someone leaning on me. Lord help me, I look up, all annoyed, when I realize that the guy standing next to me has lost consciousness, and is falling. more ›

Server Problems Continue

Server Problems Continue

Just a note from your friendly SFist co-editor -- as commenters may have guessed from the long hang time you're getting when trying to pass along your Chris Daly witticisms or anti-Alou rage, we're having server problems again. more ›

The Vista from the Valley on Microsoft

The Vista from the Valley on Microsoft

Two big names announced this week that they're stepping down at Microsoft -- first, the most human face of the company, Robert Scoble, followed shortly by founder and icon Bill Gates. While we seriously doubt the two moves were related in any way, both moves could substantially impact the company's future. If for the worse, then big trouble at Microsoft could mean a big boon to Silicon Valley. more ›

Palms, Palms, Palms for the Poor

Palms, Palms, Palms for the Poor

We were reading the Chron this morning and read up on their story about the planting of palm trees throughout the city. Let's just say right off we like palm trees. And let's just say that while we often find it kind of funny that we are planting palm trees in a city known for having tropical kind of days maybe once or twice a year, we still like the thought behind it. In fact, we think it's in a way, very San Francisco in that it shows our belief in being something reality says we're not but who cares? Anyways, while the story was mainly about the history of the trees and our determination to plant more of them, we couldn't happen to notice that there was some criticism of the trees mentioned in the story. One person brings up the fact that from an environmental standpoint, palm trees aren't exactly the best trees in that regards, or at least there are infinitely more trees that could do better. But it was this statement by Randy Shaw of the Tenderloin Housing Clinic that caught our attention. Randy complains that the trees are "are associated with upscale places like Miami Beach" and that the planting of them on 6th street, where many poor can be found, "sends the wrong message." more ›

All This Griping Makes Us Want To Throw Something Out The Window

All This Griping Makes Us Want To Throw Something Out The Window

It all started so innocently -- we got a release telling us about the Defenestration Literary Journal Launch Party at the Rickshaw stop. Being accomodating folks, we added this event to our Wednesday event column, and, since their release didn't include a link, we googled "Defenestration Literary Journal", got a link to this publication, and used it in the post. more ›

The Perils of Blogging Drunk

The Perils of Blogging Drunk

This is kind of a correction, kind of an apology, and kind of hilarious. Yesterday, while hunting up links for our Bay Area Blog Pulse, we were cruising Bloglines. The funny thing about RSS -- even if you've deleted something from your blog, once it's posted, it goes out over the wire. And apparently, if you're a MovableType user, once you've deleted something from your blog, the permalink doesn't necessarily die, either. So we saw this [NSFW]. Is it in bad taste? Yeah, pretty much. But it gave us a chuckle. more ›

We Love Movable Type!

We Love Movable Type!

Hey, everyone loves a good tool (unless you're from New England, in which case no one loves tools), and if you want to be a blogger, one of the best tools is Movable Type. Folks build blogs with it, folks use it as a simple content management system -- heck, folks even use it as a software design platform. Well, Movable Type is four years old now, and at version 3.2 is looking better than ever. more ›
