SFist Interviews Elka Karl of Kitchen Sink Magazine

SFist Interviews Elka Karl of Kitchen Sink Magazine

kitchensink.jpg As noted in this week's SF Weekly and SFist Rita's "We Read the Weeklies" column, the Bay Area's (and beyond) beloved Kitchen Sinkthe magazine for people who think too much—is calling it quits this spring. Kitchen Sink is the latest of several independent publications to shut down due to the Independent Press Association's failure to fulfill its commitments before going under. Before Kitchen Sink's proverbial well runs dry, they will be producing one last issue. But they need your help to do it! Stop on by Edinburgh Castle this Saturday night for their fundraiser, which will feature lots of bands and a raffle with prizes from Amoeba, the Believer and local artisans. more ›

Wednesdays, The New Wednesdays

Wednesdays, The New Wednesdays

Anything you can do, Wednesday can do better. Tonight: The APA group Kearny Street Workshop, in conjunction with Intersection for the Arts, presents the finale to its 2006 Intergenerational Writers Labwith a reading of the works that the lab participants have been preparing throughout the year. Sounds like experimental fiction, poetry, and maybe some lyrical prose might be making an appearance (though the group is careful to say that their work "transcends genre.") $5-15, 7-9 p.m., at Space180 (180 Capp Street, between 16th and 17th, and Mission and S. Van Ness.) more ›

SFist Goes to the Swearing Festival

SFist Goes to the Swearing Festival

Cursing can be fun. Liberating, even. In the right hands, it's almost artful. In the wrong hands, well, you have a million bad rap songs. It's all in who says it, we guess. In the hands of uptight comedians, hipsters, or cartoon eight year olds, it's giddy inducing. In other hands, it's only confirmation of our worst suspicions. All of which is why when we heard that the Edinburgh Castle was going to have it's First Annual "Swearing Festival" we knew we had to go. If there was any place that would do cursing right, it would be the Castle as it would be sure to feature lots of literary types, smart hipster types and Scottish types. We love hearing Scottish types curse. How could this event not miss? It did. Unfortunately, while the concept was brilliant, the execution wasn't. more ›

Bay Area Blog Pulse

Bay Area Blog Pulse

Hey, remember when SFist Rita asked for Manuel Jiminez' thoughts regarding The Daly's call for Bush's impeachment at the Board of Supervisors? Well, Manuel went and responded! There's nothing that SFist loves more than people actually paying attention. Left in SF notes that the work at Bernal Park starts tomorrow (and links to a Bernal neighborhood blog we hadn't seen before). Josh Wolf heads to a the federal building for a grand jury appearance in vain. And if you thought the Dykes on Bikes trademark case was over, think again. more ›

Jessica Coen For A Day

That's right, we finally have an excuse to link to Page Six, just like the kids over at Gawker do every day. Seems like our beloved Phil Bronstein "looked awfully cozy" with Mick Jagger's star-crossed ex Jerry Hall (pictured) at the Finn & Porter in Austin's Hilton. Of course, the nice woman Phil was escorting home from the Edinburgh Castle Pub after the Hunter S. Thompson wake wasn't Ms. Hall, but we're going to give Phil the benefit of the doubt, as they're probably just friends from way back. Either that, or he's polyamorous, and we're not the types to judge (at least in that regard). more ›

Wake the Dead

With Dr. Hunter S. Thompson moving on to bigger and better things, writers, critics, stoners and other hangers-on are organizing tributes around the country and around the world. But we have a feeling that the only one Hunter himself would have attended would be right here in San Francisco at the Edinburgh Castle Pub. Sure, Jahn Wenner will probably throw some blockbuster event full of literary luminaries in New York, but we all know that Rolling Stone lost any counter-cultural relevance it may have had when they moved across the country, and it's in San Francisco where the independent spirit and the embrace of the surreal that was Thompson's legacy still lives on. From the press release: more ›

Fair fa' your honest sonsie face, Great Chieftain o' the puddin' race

Edinburgh Castle is hosting their very own Burns Night throw down. The party, at a mere cost of $10, includes free buffet, bagpipes, Burns' poetry recitals, and drinking. Lots of drinking. Oh, and haggis, which SFist has had before at Burns Night and can vouch for the fact that while it might be Scottish, it is definitely crap. Best part of the night? By the fifth or sixth shot of whiskey, Burns’ heavy on the Scottish dialect poetry starts making sense. more ›
