The Dumbarton Bridge, the Bay Area's best-named bridge, reopened this morning "after a major-injury crash blocked traffic for more than 90 minutes." At least four cars were involved in the accident, which was reported at around 6:30 a.m. Blocking westbound and eastbound lanes for more than an hour, the bridge reopened a little over an hour later. Soon It Could Cost $5 To Cross Bay, Dumbarton, San Mateo Bridges
State-owned bridges like the Bay and San Mateo Bridges may face a toll hike of a dollar (from $4 to $5) in the next year in order to cover costs for retrofitting bridges like the Antioch and Dumbarton bridges, which are apparently also due for collapse in the next big earthquake (along with the Bay Bridge's current eastern span). Why bridges built in the 70s and 80s would need retrofitting is beyond us, but obviously a testament to the fact that government has always cut corners wherever possible. The Golden Gate Bridge, which is privately owned, has had a $5 toll for several years now.

David Halberstam Killed in Car Crash
Wow-- this is pretty shocking: Pulitzer Prize winning author David Halberstam was killed today in a three-car accident in Menlo Park. The accident occurred at westbound Bayfront Expressway and Willow Road near the Dumbarton Bridge and according to authorities, he was one of the passengers.
