Top 5 Queerest Food/Drink Options for Pride

Under the misguided belief that gays are capable of digestion during Gay Pride weekend, came up with a handy guide to the top five food/drink items for next week's queer festivities. In order of gayness, they are as follows: #5, Sexy Boy sandwich ("thinly sliced ribeye steak and mozzarella sticks") at Ike's Place, 3506 - 16th Street; #4, Lesbionic maki ("white tuna rolled in tempura rice noodle over spinach") at Crazy Sushi, 3232 - 16th Street; #3, Bloody Maria Montez (tequila, chipotle and vodka) at Harvey's, 500 Castro; #2, The Tranny Chaser ("champagne and white peach puree" -- mmm) at QBar, 456 Castro; and #1... well, you'll have to check out the original post to see what gets the top spot. Sacramento Gay Bar Coins "The Gavin Drop" Cocktail

The Chronicle's Carla Marinucci reports from this weekend's Democratic Convention in Sacramento that area gay bars were packed with Newsom supporters who couldn't get passes to his street party, which was in their neighborhood. (Apparently, the crowd was expected to be at 3,000, but there were reportedly only 400 people there a half an hour before the event.) The Depot, which was located right near the stage, was serving up $5 "Gavin Drops," which feature blue curacao, simple syrup, sweet and sour, and Smirnoff melon because "he's a honey." Sounds like hangover material to us. We wonder if Gav has tried one. Apparently, The Depot patrons eventually crashed the party, which we suspect upped the fun level quite a bit.

Given the drinks we are about to discuss, you might think we were still pregnant. But we're not.

-- Evil Dead 2 (1987): Sam Raimi's exquisite sequel to the equally-exquisite Evil Dead, minus any tree-rape. Screens at 7:15p.m., 9:15 at The Red Vic, 1727 Haight (at Cole).

-- Writers With Drinks: Tonight Robert Mailer Anderson, writer and game designer Austin Grossman, Sheng Wang, Darieck Scott, and Dom Brassey read. 7 p.m. at the Make-Out Room, 3225 - 22nd; $3-$5.

-- Writers With Drinks not only boasts an awesome substance-abuse party, but overlaps it with readings from some of your favorite local and national (that is to say, usually New York City- or LA-based) scribes and novelists. Who knew writers like to drink?

Friend of SFist Charlie Anders reminds us that her nifty and unusual spoken-word group, Writers With Drinks, will be experiencing yet another stupendous explosion of literary greatness this Saturday, the 9th, from 7:30 to 9:30 at The Make Out Room. Presenters include:

Don't forget, the next Fake Question Time (or, as we call it around here: FQT4) is this Saturday, April 21 at the Boys and Girls Club in Excelsior (163 London Street, x Excelsior Ave, one block off Mission). The meeting starts at 2 p.m. (not the usual 10 or 11 a.m.) and the topic is Kids and Families. Gee, you think Gavin'll let people ask questions this time? Drinks are on us if he does!

Friends of SFist, Charlie Anders (Writers with Drinks) and Annalee Newitz (whose Techsploitation column we read each week with the Weeklies) have a new anthology out called Tonight, contributors will be reading at City Lights (261 Columbus Ave. at Broadway). The book is a collection of first-person stories by women working in tech, science, game design, and other male-dominated "geeky" fields like tech law and even comic book writing. And of course the book has its own blog! (7pm)

Drinks and dessert first, are you ready? Affogato (ice cream and espresso) is one creamy-cold-sweet-meets-warmth drink we love to sip and serve. We think Chubby at Bunrab's on to something seriously great with the I forgotto adult version of affogato, pictured above. You may find it appealing if you'd like to "forgotto" holiday time with family, oy!

First, the excitement of the election, and now the excitement of a (for many people) three day weekend.

More art tonight!

We've held out this long, and we're only gonna make this jokes once, but this summer, watch out for... Drinks on a plane! (We'll now run across the street and demand of the priest an appropriately harsh prescription for penance.) But don't worry, technology and, to a lesser extent, the Bush and Blair administrations, are here to protect you. With biometric terrorist detectors, other tech that's been around for generations, and the latest in arbitrary and invasive search and profiling trends. When of course, your laptop from Apple or Dell could pose just as much of a threat. All the while, organized crime may just avoid the lines at the gate by telecommuting -- we can't wait until infesting MySpace hipsters with extortionware and bullying World of Warcrafters out of their gold gets a mention on The Sopranos.

All the shows we told you about last time are stil running, so if you haven't hit them yet, get on it! In addition, we have a one-time-only event for you for this Friday:

We know that all of you will be hitting the Daly art opening tonight, probably hoping that he's joking when he says "Tomorrow I will discuss this legislation at the opening of The Hotel Project". Chris, less discussion, more two buck Chuck!

So many moons ago, we wrote a post about Other Magazine. We were still young, unknown punks on this here locally scribbler scene. Nearly a year and a half later, we're still young punks at least (though we'll just be punks before long), mostly by virtue of being accepted by actual literary luminaries like Charlie Anders and Annalee Newitz. Granted, they're not hard to find, with Charlie MCing Writers With Drinks at the Makeout Room every month.

What are you doing tonight? Don't forget that we'll be hosting a little IndieFest get-together tonight at Dalva (3121 16th St., right next to the Roxie), from 9-close.

Hanging on a wall of the brand new Trader Vic's near Civic Center is a copy of the restaurant's very first menu, circa 1930's Oakland. Back in the day, prices for the vaguely Polynesian cuisine hovered between 50 cents and two bucks, and as we waited to be seated we watched a tall blonde woman in a black trench coat study the old menu. Eventually, she turned to her companion and exclaimed, "I can't believe how cheap this place is!"

Weekly drinking review.

Get together for drinks and lit at the Makeout Room this Saturday.
