Happy Margarita Day! Our Picks For The Best Margaritas In SF

Happy Margarita Day! Our Picks For The Best Margaritas In SF

Today, February 22, is National Margarita Day, one of the most sacred days for Marina cougars and Jimmy Buffett fanboys living in Sausalito. While San Francisco's artisan bar scene desperately wants to make margaritas the new manhattans (we'll let Regina George tell you how we feel about that), the drink of choice for many a Lake Havasu spring-breaker remains just that: the cocktail of the pedestrian partier. And we wouldn't want it any other way. more ›

Oscar Watch: Controversial Hollywood Cocktails At Quince

Oscar Watch: Controversial Hollywood Cocktails At Quince

The Financial District's noted restaurant of glitz and glamour, Quince, just concocted several new cocktails to coincide with Oscar season. (Pst, the Academy Awards fall on Sunday, February 26th.) Most of the drinks sound irresistible like the Chinatown Collins (a gin and lime brew) or the Casablanca Cobbler (with quince-infused cognac, lemon, Meyer lemon tincture and sparkling wine). Yet a couple brews, based off of Two Women and Papillon, are unusual cinema choices for festive cocktails. (The former film is about a mother and daughter's brutal gang-rape by Moroccan soldiers; the latter involves Dustin Hoffman famously shoving something up his butt.) more ›

Best Manhattan In San Francisco?

Best Manhattan In San Francisco?

After attending last night's Dueling Manhattans booze night at Jardinière—and after hearing several patrons worry about rye or bourbon selections, whether the cherries were brandied or maraschino—we wondered just where one could find the best Manhattan in town. We're already rabid fans of the White Manhattan at NOPA (which boasts white whiskey, Benedictine. bianco or blanc vermouth, and orange bitters), but we love the cheap ones found at most mid-level dive bars in downtown San Francisco. We'd like to anoint a singular sensation. Help us out, won't you? more ›

Top 5 Queerest Food/Drink Options for Pride

Top 5 Queerest Food/Drink Options for Pride

Under the misguided belief that gays are capable of digestion during Gay Pride weekend, came up with a handy guide to the top five food/drink items for next week's queer festivities. In order of gayness, they are as follows: #5, Sexy Boy sandwich ("thinly sliced ribeye steak and mozzarella sticks") at Ike's Place, 3506 - 16th Street; #4, Lesbionic maki ("white tuna rolled in tempura rice noodle over spinach") at Crazy Sushi, 3232 - 16th Street; #3, Bloody Maria Montez (tequila, chipotle and vodka) at Harvey's, 500 Castro; #2, The Tranny Chaser ("champagne and white peach puree" -- mmm) at QBar, 456 Castro; and #1... well, you'll have to check out the original post to see what gets the top spot. Sacramento Gay Bar Coins "The Gavin Drop" Cocktail

Sacramento Gay Bar Coins "The Gavin Drop" Cocktail

The Chronicle's Carla Marinucci reports from this weekend's Democratic Convention in Sacramento that area gay bars were packed with Newsom supporters who couldn't get passes to his street party, which was in their neighborhood. (Apparently, the crowd was expected to be at 3,000, but there were reportedly only 400 people there a half an hour before the event.) The Depot, which was located right near the stage, was serving up $5 "Gavin Drops," which feature blue curacao, simple syrup, sweet and sour, and Smirnoff melon because "he's a honey." Sounds like hangover material to us. We wonder if Gav has tried one. Apparently, The Depot patrons eventually crashed the party, which we suspect upped the fun level quite a bit. more ›

Get Ur Geek On

Get Ur Geek On

We've held out this long, and we're only gonna make this jokes once, but this summer, watch out for... Drinks on a plane! (We'll now run across the street and demand of the priest an appropriately harsh prescription for penance.) But don't worry, technology and, to a lesser extent, the Bush and Blair administrations, are here to protect you. With biometric terrorist detectors, other tech that's been around for generations, and the latest in arbitrary and invasive search and profiling trends. When of course, your laptop from Apple or Dell could pose just as much of a threat. All the while, organized crime may just avoid the lines at the gate by telecommuting -- we can't wait until infesting MySpace hipsters with extortionware and bullying World of Warcrafters out of their gold gets a mention on The Sopranos. more ›

So many moons ago, we wrote a post about Other Magazine. We were still young, unknown punks on this here locally scribbler scene. Nearly a year and a half later, we're still young punks at least (though we'll just be punks before long), mostly by virtue of being accepted by actual literary luminaries like Charlie Anders and Annalee Newitz. Granted, they're not hard to find, with Charlie MCing Writers With Drinks at the Makeout Room every month. more ›

Untacky Tiki Technology

Hanging on a wall of the brand new Trader Vic's near Civic Center is a copy of the restaurant's very first menu, circa 1930's Oakland. Back in the day, prices for the vaguely Polynesian cuisine hovered between 50 cents and two bucks, and as we waited to be seated we watched a tall blonde woman in a black trench coat study the old menu. Eventually, she turned to her companion and exclaimed, "I can't believe how cheap this place is!"
