Examiner Needs Course in Drag 101

Examiner Needs Course in Drag 101

Pardon us, San Francisco Examiner, but Donna Sachet is not "a drag queen dressed in a red ball gown." She is THE drag queen dressed in a red ball gown. Next you'll be telling us that you've spotted an unidentified Asian man hanging out in the mayor's office. more ›

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Rupaul's Drag Race Season 2 Teaser

Perhaps you couldn't give two shits about the state of drag as we know it. But like it or not, you live in a city that remains at the forefront of the underground culture formerly known as "female impersonation." With that in mind, see the above teaser for Rupaul's Drag Race's sophomore season on Logo—a show that's not so much about the forefront as it is about overly Gaga'd and Beyoncé'd, ass end of the drag world—and you also may want to check out some of World of Wonder's ongoing tribute to National Drag History Month (which we're pretty sure Logo invented last year to pimp this very show). more ›

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Virgin Mary Drag

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Virgin Mary Drag

Nothing says Christmas like a drag performance, right? New York-based drag performer Mimi Imfurst is doing the second of two shows tonight in San Francisco at Finn's Funhouse (814 Grove St) of her show "Madonna's Christmas Celebration" -- and that's The Madonna, as opposed to "Like a Virgin" Madonna. Tickets are still available, and judging from the preview vid above, it looks like a straight-up, good old fashioned comedy drag medley show, heavy on pop song parodies and Sarah Palin jokes. more ›

Drag Queens On Ice: A Gallery

             + 3 more

A troupe of about fifty assorted drag queens, gays, lesbians and others took the Union Square ice rink by storm yesterday -- all in the midst of the afternoon storminess that included a few minutes of hail. Organizers Beth Amphetamine (pictured here) and Vivvyanne ForeverMore (of Tiara Sensation) hoped this could be a fun and educational experience for the holiday shoppers and families gathered for wintertime skating, and by all accounts a good time was had by all. In fact, one little girl, aged approximately 7, was overheard as she skated by telling her dad, "This is the best day of my whole life!!" more ›

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Drag Golden Girls

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Drag Golden Girls

It's becoming a holiday (and June) tradition for a quartet of San Francisco's finest drag talents to tackle, on the live stage, word-for-word, a selection of old episodes of The Golden Girls -- that long-running sitcom about randy old ladies still beloved by gays in syndication. Given her spot-on inflection and talents for extemporaneous jabber, Heklina is always a delight as Dorothy, and backing her up are Pollo Del Mar as Rose, Cookie Dough as Blanche, and Matthew Martin as Sophia. The video above comes from last year's holiday show. This year's December run features just "The Christmas Episodes," and tonight's 7 p.m. opening night performance is a benefit for Toys for Tots and features a guest appearance by Fernando & Greg, formerly of 92.7, and now on 99.7. more ›

Local Drag Legend Vicki Marlane Makes the New York Times

We feel truly remiss in not catching this sooner, but since when did the Grey Lady start covering the San Francisco drag beat anyway? more ›

Punk-Drag Party Charlie Horse Killed By Neighbor Noise Complaints

Punk-Drag Party Charlie Horse Killed By Neighbor Noise Complaints

The expanding War on Fun has taken another life, ladies and germs. Marke B. over at the SFBG reports that punk-politico drag queen Anna Conda has decided to call it quits on her weekly Friday party Charlie Horse at the Cinch after complaining Polk Street neighbors brought the bar before the Entertainment Commission. Rather than "take a break" and try to tone down the often raucous drag night (where it was likely the noisy smoking porch out back and the spillover out front that brought the complaints) Anna has decided to put a bullet in the head of this five-year-old party and pursue other ventures. more ›

Local Drag Queen Makes History at AT&T Park

Local Drag Queen Makes History at AT&T Park

We're a little late on this one, but: local tranny Donna Sachet made history this past week by becoming the first (?) drag queen to perform the "The Star-Spangled Banner" at a Major League Baseball game. (We cannot find any clips of her singing at Tuesday's game, but here she is performing at some pageant thingy.) more ›
