Closeup of Anti-Whoring Sign at Powell and Market

Frank Chu and the "Jesus Loves You" guy seem to get all of the crazy-loon-with-crazier-sign attention. It's just not fair So, here's a shot of the sign that the guy at Powell and Market, near the cable car turnaround, has by his side screams "damned whore, repent!" at passersby.

Moving out of the LoRi (Lower Outer Rincon Hill)/South Park neighborhood, the folks at Twitter moved up Third Street to a sweeter, swankier pad.

Vault Fire at Battery & Pine

Just a little before 6 a.m. this morning, SFFD got a report of smoke coming out of a manhole at Battery and Pine in downtown San Francisco. When they got there, they found (another!) vault fire. According to Appeal, "PG&E is saying that initial reports suggest that 'a cable failed' which 'produced a little smoke.' They expect the area to remain a work site (that is, a big PG&E truck and workers are in the line of traffic), but all streets have been reopened."

SF Open Studios: SOMA/Downtown

Saturday marks the SOMA/downtown installment of SF Open Studios. All of the open galleries will be in the Eastern SOMA/Yerbua Buena area near SF MOMA -- the Yerba Buena neighborhood, if you will. Fourteen art galleries in the hood will open their doors for free art and free refreshments. Contemporary, emerging, and established artists will be featured at these galleries:

Two years ago, we happened on this rare downtown standout called Shotwell. Our first visit made us (literally) squee with joy, because not only did they have fantastic vintage pieces, but also carried a bevy of local designers, like Rebecca Beeson and Gytha Mander. Bag Lady hearts local designers, very much so.

Tomorrow Night: <em>SF Weekly</em> Bestows Accolades to Local Musicians

Bomb Squad Truck at Transbay Terminal

The big bomb squad truck is there at the Transbay Terminal right now. AlertSF says you'll want to avoid the area for at least the next 90 minutes.

Free Ice Cream Downtown Today

Free ice cream will be handed out later this afternoon in downtown San Francisco. Why? Because it's going to be hot today. Between 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Beale between Howard and Folsom, free sweet frozen dairy treats will be handed out to the presumably sweltering masses.

Whast's Going On Here, Nova?

Heh.

Deborah Butterfield's Horses at 425 Market

Deborah Butterfield's horse sculptures will be on display at 425 Market until September 14. Check them out if you're in the neighborhood.

We just got word that there is a rather large roaring in the financial district. Or, as our tipster informed us, there's a "[b]ig ass fire in the Financh right now." Oh dear. "Sirens everywhere, smoke smellable all over Embarcadero Center," we're told

Have You Seen This (Alleged) Bike Thief?

SFAppeal has word that the above (alleged!) bike thief was caught cutting bike lock cable thingies on Market near Fifth Street yesterday. And just who caught him? Members of the SF Bike Coalition who were frolicking about during their "Ice Cream Sunday Ride."

Let Ann-Margaret sooth your soul. Because after hearing this news, you're gonna need it. See, Swoops, the adorable and infamous blackbird who terrorized passersby from her perch outside City National Bank at Front and California streets, is gone. Or, so says a City National Bank employee who had a clear view of Swoops from his desk, who notices his absence this week.

Here are some images of today's San Francisco Pride festivities. Wee!

Spooked Horse Runs Amok Through City Streets

Oh this is rich. It seems a scared horse attached to a carriage, which is mean and unnecessary in this post-industrialized era of ours, went on a rampage through North Beach and The Embarcadero, "hospitalizing its handler and knocking at least two people off bicycles," according to SF Examiner. The incident, happening around 6 p.m. on Saturday, occurred as "the horse was being prepared for work when it was apparently spooked." The frightening horse, according to SFPD, also 'knocked down its handler and trampled over him." Yikes. Then, after that, the equine darted down The Embarcadero, "tracing a course through Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach, before finally being corralled by a Good Samaritan." But the horse's will proved too strong, because it busted free and galloped down The Embarcadero, "knocking down at least two bicyclists." Finally, two bystanders managed to subdue to horse, who has since been taken to a veterinarian in Novato. And as Eye On Blogs, Brittney Gilbert pointed out today, "Maybe horses don't want to pull buggies in urban areas." Word.

On Saturday Sunday at Yerba Buena Gardens in downtown San Francisco, the annual Israel in the Gardens Festival took place. As expected, it was more comfortable than your typical daytime outdoor public festival, complete with more shade, good bargains, comfy seating, less dairy, and almost zero SF progressives in attendance.

Have you had your head pecked while lunching or lollygagging downtown? This might be the reason: A tiny, adorable, rapscallion of a blackbird has been tormenting pedestrians in San Francisco's financial district as of late. The little bird, christened Swoops, has been "guarding his nest in a behavior experts call 'mobbing.'"

Food <s>Truck</s> Bike Bringing "Secret Sandwiches" Downtown Tomorrow

While some of us can't find it in our mercifully elitist hearts to enjoy a taco out of a Toyota, many of you do. Many of you love the food truck, nonstaurant trend. But before this year's mobile artisan trend took off, there was the Boccalone Salumi Cycle. And Eater has word that a "Boccalone Salumi Cycle is about to dawn upon the Financial District" to deliver hot sandwiches to hungry worker bees. Trouble is they want to know where they should set up their beef-injecting services first. According to @boccalone: "Secret Sandwiches coming this Friday lunch via our Salumi cycle. $8 Prosciutto Panino. Which downtown corner should we visit first?" So, let them know.

30 Hurt In 71 Haight-Noriega Crash

A little after 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, the 71 Haight-Noriega (of course, it had to be the notoriously dodgy 71), crashed into a moving car at Market and Jones streets. Both vehicles were traveling east on Market before they smashed into each other. According to Muni spokeswoman Kristen Holland, "[p]reliminary reports indicate seven people were taken to the hospital and 23 others were treated at the scene for injuries sustained in the crash." None of the injuries were life-threatening. Why did the two hunks of steel ram into each other? Who's to say. This is Muni, a mystery wrapped questions rolled into a transfer. But the Muni driver in yesterday's crash has been placed on "non-driving status" until his pee tests positive or negative for substance abuse.

Arrest in Downtown SF Armed Robbery

This kind of behavior flies in the Mission, is par the course in the TL, and is sometimes OK in the Castro during a particularly drunk Pride weekend. But armed robbery is most certainly not typical in downtown San Francisco. See, a little after midnight on Sunday, Jonathan Dyson was arrested for armed robbery. According to CBS 5, "[a] 30-year-old man had gotten off of work and was walking on Montgomery Street when he noticed two men walking a short distance in front of him ... the two men then stopped and when the victim walked past them, one of the suspects stepped in front of him and pointed a gun at him, demanding property." Mere blocks away from the Ritz-Carlton apartments? Unacceptable! The unidentified victim was uninjured, and managed to call the fuzz a few blocks away, after the robbery occurred. Jonathan Dyson was busted for "attempted robbery, threatening with a weapon, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a concealed firearm."

SFist Eats: Midi

by Tiffany Maleshefski

Three people suffered "non-life-threatening" wounds after Duwayne Hyman, 25, went loopy on Monday, stabbing three strangers in downtown San Francisco. According to KTVU, the first attack happened at the Montgomery Street Station. A 17-year-old lad, it seems, was sliced on his left side. Ugh. Then, a couple of hours later, Hyman plunged his knife into a 38-year-old man at Jessie and First streets, and once more into the thigh of a 40-year-old guy back at Montgomery Street.

Oh my, word. Did you hear it? We received a few emails mentioning it, but NBC 11 confirms:

We just received the following, rather tragic alert from a reader:

Tomorrow is BART Rider Appreciation / Thank You Day, and you, dear BART riders, will reap the benefits. The people at TransFair USA will give away 50,000 coupons for a shot of fair trade espresso from Tully's Coffee. Perfect for getting a move on in the morning and getting things moving, you know, down there.
