Tickets, tickets, anyone want some tickets? We have two tickets to Friday's concert at Slim's featuring: Until June, Matt White and Melee. We've already told you that you don't want to be late to this show, because all three bands are equally as good.

Twenty-four of the world's most bitchin-ass surfers are on their way to Half Moon bay for a dangerous showdown at this year's 2008 Mavericks Surf Contest. Shore stars like Shawn Rhodes, Greg Long (San Clemente FTW), Brock Little, Randy Cone, Santa Cruz's Tyler Smith, and more will take part in tomorrow's dangerous and exhilarating surf contest. The cold waters of Half Moon Bay combined with the Pacific storm winter weather make some of "the most dangerous waves in the world." This battle of the sea is not to be missed. Dude.
Who could forget last year's public display of hair pulling and uncontrollable sobbing surrounding the Barleycorn's closure? We almost did until we read Eater's news that the Barleycorn will - get this - turn into another Irish pub called Duffy's Irish Pub. Ta-da. Word has it, straight from Luisa Hanson's mouth according to Eater, that the still-empty space at 1415 Larkin is set to open come February '08. Although a visable lack of renovation seems to suggest otherwise.
Sure. We'd love to see Hilary Clinton win just for the darling Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton pattern that's coming along nicely, but we're also curious about this Barack Obama fella. He seems to be some guy running for President of the U S of A, and you can see him this Wednesday night. He's here to talk, make the rounds, look deep into your eyes, and probably make nice with a few unreasonably sensitive gays.
Jumping into a quickly growing crowd, we looked down at our watch and it said 8:45pm. What was Ingrid Michaelson already doing on stage? Right before leaving our house, we checked the website: 8pm - Doors Open, 9pm - Show Starts. Boy, were we surprised to find out Michaelson had already been playing for 15 minutes. Maybe it's fate, karma or maybe just bad planning but this is the second time we've missed Michaelson's full...
Minipop, a San Francisco-based band, is releasing their much anticipated debut album, A New Hope next Tuesday. Lucky for all of us we'll be able to get their new CD this Saturday, a few days early, at their CD Release party at Rickshaw Stop.
At the Roxie, (3117 16th St. between Valencia & Guerrero) it's FARMCORE, a documentary about punk rock's 1980s home in the Mission, The Farm. The screening is a benefit for San Francisco Indybay Media and Oaxaca Indymedia. The film documents the punk scene (Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, and Black Flag played there, to name a few) and the staff’s struggles to keep the doors open while battling a greedy landlord and hostile police, until the place became an early victim of Mission gentrification and “live-work” loft conversion schemes (now you can say, "Ellis Act Evictions, that's sooo 1987"). In its heyday, the Farm also provided a place for community gardens, an urban barnyard, an art gallery, child daycare center and a multicultural community space. (7 & 9pm)
Happy 10th birthday, Bitch Magazine! Back in 1996, local writers Lisa Jervis and Andi Zeisler kicked up a furor with their provocatively-named zine about feminism and pop culture -- and ten years later, the magazine's putting out its 33rd issue (the Hot and Bothered Issue), they've put out a best-of anthology (BitchFest), and Ms. Zeisler's good-naturedly matching wits with Deborah Solomon of the NY Times Magazine (the East Coast's own Aidan Vaziri).
We're inundated with the hottest variety of shows you could ever hope for.
Saturday: It's all so confusing! The San Francisco Golden Gloves event that's been going on all week isn't actually the Golden Gloves (seriously, click on that link and read that story, it's pretty interesting) that USA Boxing (boxing's governing body) recognizes. The Golden Gloves was held to such little fanfare that we missed it, earlier this month. This week's non-sanctioned Golden Gloves-monikered event is handled by the same folks who handled last year's, an event we enjoyed thoroughly. Anyway, real or velveteen, the finals are happening Friday and tonight, and we can't wait. The Civic Center doors open at 5:00 for the 6:30 show, buy tickets here.
Like Yoga? Like Cycling? Want to support a good cause? Do all three by dropping in on Friend of SFist Tony Eason's benefit classes at Satori Yoga Studio. An expert on yoga for cyclists, and a LifeCycle veteran, Tony will be holding session from 6:30 to 8:00 tonight, with donations going to support his pledge for the AIDS LifeCycle ride. If you can't do it this Friday, drop by next Friday for a special session just for cyclists that will include a bike fitting and special tips.
Don't worry, this is not another one of our posts where we bemoan the razing of another local independent theater to make way for a much-needed Walgreens. This is a happy story! Gary Meyer, friend of SFist and owner of the Richmond's Balboa Theater, has announced a change in the programming at the theater. Once the best place in town to see a double feature of second-run movies on the cheap, the Balboa is now devoting one of their two screens to "premieres of international and US independent films, restored classics and selected revival festivals." This is a moment reminiscent of the first time someone dropped their chocolate in your peanut butter, as we like nothing better than having the option of high-falutin' classy cinema on one screen, and first-run-fun on the other.
It's come to this. We don't know if it's a failure of the imagination or simply a lack of inspiration, but we're just not getting enough questions to fuel the acerbic wit machine known as the Essefficist. In order to get you all used to pestering the poor man to answer your nagging questions, we are offering two pairs of free tickets to tomorrow's show at Bimbos 365, featuring The Gift of Gab with friends Lateef the Truth Speaker and DJs Reim and D Sharp (we assume Chief Xcel is holed up somewhere working on some phat beats). You can thank Quannum Projects for giving us the tickets to give to you.
