Celebrated each year on the first Friday in June, National Doughnut Day started 75 years ago as a fundraising effort for the Salvation Army. Since then, many national chains have been giving away free doughnuts. While you likely won't get a free maple bacon donut from esteems bakeries like Dynamo, you can still get a raging sugar high at some places for free.

• Noted doughnut maker Krispy Kreme is offering free doughnut with no purchase necessary today. You can find your closest Krispy Kreme here.

• Dunkin Donuts is giving away freebies all day, but WE DO'T HAVE ANY IN THE BAY AREA. So... sorry.

And that's about it. Shame on you, Bay Area. Anyway, some local shops are also participating in their own special way.

• Also, though you won't score any free sweet treats, through June 15, Entenmann's will donate $1 to the Salvation Army for every person who "likes" the Entenmann's Facebook Page.
