While feather were ruffled at last year's Gap/Don Fisher/Presidio Museum/no bowling alley plan meeting thingy, this year things were a bit calmer. According to SFCItizen, the new plans for the Fisherization of the Presidio were released last night, and he scored an early look. Some highlights: The "white box" is no more, the Lodge (i.e., a “massive hotel”) is stuck in the middle of it all, the Walt Disney Family Museum (isn't "family" implied?) will boggle the mind, and more. The bowling alley, as most of you know by now, will be yet another memory of San Francisco past. more ›

We are still trying to work with the Presidio Trust on lease extensions as well as finding a new home for bowling, but to date we have not been successful. The Presidio Trust has been unable to find a suitable location to build a new bowling center. Your comments are necessary to champion our cause.

Alwaysupndown has loads of choice images from last Wednesday's Yes-on-A, No-on-H protest at the Market Street Gap store. At first we thought it was over Gap's continuing efforts to shove horizontal pastels down our throats. Not so. Seems that it's due to Gap Inc. founder, Don Fisher, and his douche-y behavior. He helped send out "a misleading mailer attacking Prop. A," screwed over a deal with Board of Supes president Aaron Peskin, served puppy carpaccio at a cocktail party, or something evil like that. more ›

Last week's winner, the San Jose Metro: Gary Singh wants the San Jose flea market to move to City Hall. Folks moving from city to city to run for office -- hey, at least they actually move into the city they want to represent down in the South Bay. Ed Jew, take a note! Cover: yay the environment, reduce your carbon footprint by buying a Prius. There's a gymnastics meet on the Olympics circuit this weekend. Stick the landing! Judd Apatow continues to have problems writing good female characters. A local guy's short films are really good. They screen Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes in a movie theater in Campbell? The new Philip Glass symphony sounded really good in Santa Cruz. Central Vietnamese food in a new Vietnam Town Santana Row-ish setting, And mmmm, stone fruit. more ›

is pretty hilarious. Spanish food in Menlo Park (we got totally trashed on sangria at that restaurant once! Fond memories.) And the Metro also wants more late-night pastry places. We hear ya. more ›

iwillfollow_dutch.jpg We know you're probably just dying to know what's been happening on all those fascinating news items we've been telling you about. Well, fret no more! Your prayers have been answered! Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval argued on behalf of himself yesterday that he shouldn't have to pay Don Fisher's political committee any more money. The judge seemed sympathetic to District 11's finest, calling Fisher's request "odd." Man, the New York Liquor Store in Oakland's having a bad week. Not only does it get targeted for vandalism by Your Black Muslim bakery, then set on fire, and then its owner gets kidnapped and left in a car truck, but now folks in the neighborhood are looting the charred, broken remains of the store. After agreeing to host a ping-pong tournament with Shanghai, Gavin Newsom travels to Beijing and checks out the Great Wall. Also -- dude, check him out playing basketball at Yao Ming's elementary school. What are those shoes? And Gavin, have you gotten us a panda yet? And Tookie Williams's request for a stay on his execution order was denied. Only Arnold Schwarzenegger can save him now. more ›

sandoval_sm.jpg First he loses the race for assessor (and the sweet almost 100% pay raise it would have entailed), and now this? Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval will be arguing on his own behalf (who is it again that has himself as a lawyer...?) that he shouldn't have to pay an additional $57,000 to the political committee he unsuccessfully tried to sue. You may remember that Sandoval sued Don Fisher of the Gap and political consultant Duane Baughman for releasing attack ads against him in the 2004 election -- but he lost the case and now has to pay for the defendants' attorneys' fees. Sandoval settled with Baughman but not with Fisher -- and now Fisher's trying to get the $57,000 they claim they're owed over the appeal that Sandoval filed and their costs in attempting to enforce the judgment against Sandoval. Sandoval claims he has no money to pay them, can't afford a lawyer, says they're trying to take his house, and claims they've even talked about garnishing his wages. Fisher's lawyer says they don't want Sandoval's house but they do want him to pay their costs. Argument's this afternoon. more ›

Sandoval is alerting people to the fact that he's running for Assessor. The election will be in November; if there's an incumbent, it will be an appointed incumbent, as Mabel Teng has resigned. The Mayor can appoint someone, but they will face an immediate election (not re-election.) more ›

matt_absentee.jpg Once a PD, always a PD -- Matt Gonzalez comes to the aid of fellow progressive (and former colleague at the public defender's office) Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval, penning an editorial published on the front page of the local African-American paper, the SF Bay View. So Sandoval's in a fight with Republican political consultant Duane Baughman over "anonymous" attack flyers mailed out in the 2004 race. But who? Who was it? Well, Gonzalez calls 'em out, identifying the flyers as sent by.... Don Fisher from the Gap -- possibly in retaliation for Sandoval's vote supporting a Gonzalez-sponsored bill against chain stores (which failed). Aw, say it ain't so, Matt! We love our Gap hoodie! One of the flyers, which Matt calls "the dirtiest piece of political mail I've ever seen," had a swastika on it and called Sandoval anti-Semitic. Another one had a picture of Ashcroft with the phrase "thanks, Gerardo!" stamped on The Soaring Eagle's forehead, arguing that Sandoval's support of that proposition allowing non-citizens to vote in school board elections would lead to more deportations. What, Fisher couldn't get Joss Stone to go negative about Sandoval's failure to wear white denim this season too? Gonzalez and Sandoval are calling for better disclosure laws on local political mailers in the future. Us, we're calling for a more relaxed fit on Don Fisher's boot-cut sandblasted vintage jeans. This picture of Matt is awesome. From the Progressive Voter Project. more ›

sandovallg.jpg Our super-secret SFist sources have notified us that Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval, repping the eleven for the Excelsior, is holding a rally today at noon, on the steps of City Hall. Why's he holding a rally?, you ask. Is he that worked up about line-item veto power over the MUNI budget? Well, no. So when Sandoval was running for reelection to the Board of Supes, someone anonymously started putting out flyers calling him anti-Semitic. (Sandoval made some unfortunate statements back in 2001.) Sandoval handily won District 11, but was so upset about the anonymous mailers that he sued. Funny, that First Amendment. So Duane Baughman, the political consultant whose clients put out the flyers (and who's now working with Mayor Bloomberg in NY), claimed that Sandoval's lawsuit inpinged on his First Amendment rights to call anyone a Nazi that he wants -- and he won. So, under California law, Sandoval is now on the hook for Baughman's legal fees, to the tune of $143K. Sandoval is now saying he might have to sell his house to pay. So Sandoval's holding a rally today to bring people's attention to the issue of anonymous mailers -- he's never figured out who paid for the flyers, but he suspects it's Don Fisher from the Gap -- and to protest the fees being assessed against him. It sounds like the whole progressive gang's gonna be there! And -- dare we hope? Maybe even Chris Daly? Oh, you better believe we're checking this one out. more ›
