Our warm-weather weekend brought some marine life close to sure, including a couple of dolphins who, for whatever reason, decided to put on a free show for beachgoers at Stinson Beach on Sunday. The two leaped out of the water in succession and swam around the water just off the beach all afternoon.

As ABC 7 tells us, the pair of dolphins "hung around for several hours," much to the delight of everyone there.

A rare albino dolphin calf, specifically a Risso's dolphin, was just spotted last week in Monterey Bay among a pod of Risso's dolphins. The sighting was captured on video on June 7 by Princess Monterey Whale Watching, and on the YouTube video description they say the dolphin could either be albino or "possibly leucistic," which is a similar condition of partial loss or reduction in multiple types of pigmentation.

As ABC 7 notes, adult Risso's dolphins grow to about 10 feet long.

The little white guy can be seen even better in the video below, which was shot on Friday, June 9.

Albino dolphins have occasionally gotten worldwide fame, like one named Angel who was captured by dolphin hunters in Japan and sold to an aquarium in 2014. She's been the subject of considerable activism because she's been forced to live ever since in a small, chlorinated tank.

Sailing in the San Francisco is a beautiful, if often chilly, experience. It was made all the more so (beautiful, that is) for several women this past Friday when their encounter with a bottlenose dolphin was captured on video. The woman lucky enough to film the dolphin spoke with CBS 5, and described the scene to the channel.

“We were so excited and shocked, as none of us had ever seen a dolphin in the Bay," explained Julia Smith. “We were racing and they just showed up."

While sighting of dolphins near Ocean Beach are not that uncommon, this is believed to be the first video showing bottlenose dolphins in San Francisco Bay — an unusual (although apparently not worrying for marine biologists) occurrence.

Director of San Francisco's Golden Gate Cetacean Research Bill Keener told SF Gate that bottlenose dolphins only began hanging around the Bay starting in 1983 as a result of El Niño. And this is of course a year when an unusual number of sightings of other marine mammals like humpbacks have been happening in the Bay and on the coast.

The dolphin (or dolphins, Smith isn't sure if it was one or several) in Smith's video appears to be having quite the time — breaching repeatedly to chorus of delighted cheers from the women on the boat.

"We don't see it a lot here, but it happens," Keener told the publication. "They're big-brained animals, very intelligent. They're curious, and they see people in boats all the time."

Marine mammal experts continue to investigate the death of a dolphin found washed up on Ocean Beach Monday, saying that the beached beast is a relative rarity for the Bay Area.

Marine Mammal Center spokesperson Laura Sherr confirms SFist's report that at least one dead sea lion and a dead dolphin were discovered on the San Francisco beach Monday by a National Parks Service beach patrol team.

Sherr says that teams from the Marine Mammal Center and the California Academy of Sciences responded to the report of adult male bottlenose dolphin at around 2 p.m. Monday, but that "the dolphin was not alive when the rescue team arrived."

The dolphin, which was about 9 feet long and weighs 755 lbs, was loaded into the beach patrol truck for transport to the Marine Mammal Center's Sausalito headquarters. That's where experts performed a full necropsy "to attempt to determine a cause of death and learn as much about this animal as possible," Sherr says.

"We’ll look at every organ. We’ll try to look for signs of disease and we’ll connect samples for studies,” biologist Lauren Rust told CBS5.

“We don’t exactly know, it could be change in prey, change in water temperature. There could be a lot of factors that could change there.”

While the dead sea lion and a deceased elephant seal also spotted that day are fairly common for Ocean Beach, this dolphin is a relative rarity for the Bay Area: according to Sherr, this is only the 12th bottlenose dolphin they've responded to since 1975.

In the other 11 cases, "two in San Luis Obispo County were found alive and successfully relocated, another was treated and released, and the other eight were either found dead or died in treatment" Sherr told the Ex.

According to Golden Gate Cetacean Research co-founder Bill Keener, the dead dolphin is "pretty unusual." He'll be working to determine of this specific dolphin has been spotted before.

“If it’s one of 82 in our catalog, we’ll be able to see where it had been earlier in its life, where it might have spent time hanging out,” Keener told the Ex.

“It would be very interesting to find out more of its life history.”

At least two dead sea lions, including one large adult, and one large dolphin, washed ashore today along Ocean Beach and there may be more to come.

A tipster sent in these photos showing a removal effort by National Parks Service lifeguards in the case of the large dolphin, which was big enough that it was hanging out the back of the crew's truck.

The large sea lion washed up further down the beach, and was being mostly ignored by a group of fishermen there. There was also a smaller animal that appeared to be a sea lion pup.

It's unclear just yet if this could part of a larger beaching, or part of a recent pattern, but a report arrived just this morning via Bay City News that ocean temperatures both along the San Francisco coast, down the Peninsula, and in Monterey Bay are about five degrees above normal for this time of year. In Monterey Bay, a buoy that typically would read 58 degrees in early July just hit 64.

Warmer temperatures lead to die-offs and relocations of schools of small plankton and other fish that are a food source for the mammals, and more beachings due to starvation are expected.

The higher ocean temperatures are attributed to a huge mass of warm water in the Pacific, referred to by experts just as a "blob" because it lacks precedent, and some say this could be a precursor of a significant El Nino season and could also be exacerbating our drought.

Last year, a record temperature off our coast was set on July 23, and that was 68 degrees, and this has meteorologists and ocean experts wondering if we might not see another record this month of 70 degrees or higher.

Today's beachings follow multiple cases of dead whales appearing on our coast over the last couple of months.

Update: CBS 5, inspired by SFist, went to Ocean Beach and got this sunset footage of the largest of the three dead mammals, which they say is an elephant seal. It appears not to have been removed yet. There's still not explanation for the three beachings.

Earlier this month in Vallejo, Calif., a young, first-time mom gave birth to a bright and energetic offspring who will probably never know a better life outside the confines of a pool in suburban sprawl.

Mirabella, whose name means "lovely and wondrous" in Italian, was born to 9-year-old dolphin Bella, who lives at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo. According to Holly Muraco, a marine mammal reproductive specialist who works at the Looney Tunes-themed zoo, Mirabella is an "adorable, independent and tough dolphin." Although mother Bella is reportedly a great mom, Mirabella will be staying at the theme park to live out the next 45 to 50 years of her life in Vallejo.

This week in wildlife sightings: local nature observer David Cruz spotted this pod of cetaceans over the past week or so, leaping out of the water off of Ocean Beach and generally acting like the carefree, intelligent creatures they are.

To paraphrase the late Douglas Adams: we San Franciscans assume we're more intelligent than dolphins because we have achieved so much — like proper public decorum, football and expensive rent — while all the dolphins have ever done is muck about in the water having a good time. Conversely, the dolphins (probably) believe that they are far more intelligent than us for precisely the same reasons.

Note: some of the photos may actually be of porpoises, but according to this handy graphic, it would appear these are dolphins we're looking at.

She really wants to travel to Hawaii with her family to swim with dolphins. Who wouldn't? But Kiona deserves this trip.... certainly more than you do, if we may be so bold. However, for her wish to be fulfilled, she needs help. This is where you come in: The Make-A-Wish Bay Area chapter is asking for locals to donate airline miles to help children, like Kiona, for their "Take My Seat" airline miles donation campaign.

Miles donated will help provide Bay Area "Wish" children with the opportunity to take a vacation from their severe illnesses and travel to their most-wanted destination. According to Make-A-Wishj, "the average number of miles needed for one domestic round-trip ticket is 50,000, but your readers can donate as few as 1,000 miles online. More than 70 percent of all wishes involve air travel for the child, as well as their family."

Your donated miles will also go to help these Bay Area kids:

- Analiese from Gilroy (age 4) is fighting kidney cancer and wishes to go to Disney World with her family.
- Oliver from Albany (age 4) wishes to go to Sea World with his family for a vacation from his leukemia.
- Nathan from Santa Rosa (age 5) wishes to conduct his own Thomas the Train experience to escape his cancer treatments for a few days.
- James from Salinas (age 11) is fighting brain cancer and wishes to travel to Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida.

Please, please, please donate here.

Coffee Cups for Dolphins

As we struggled to survive an interminable meeting this afternoon, we turned in desperation to the pale coffee available in the corner of the room. 2. This cup turns white under the gaze of happy dolphins.
