People are crying foul after SFPD had the unmitigated gall to hand out citations to people boozing it up in Dolores Park. Drinking alcohol in San Francisco parks, as most of you know, is verboten. No matter how many shows at Amnesia you've attended. No matter how often you prattle on about the salted caramel at Bi-Rite Ice Cream Shoppe. No matter how age-inappropriate your haircut and attire is. Drinking in public is illegal.

According to Dolores Park View, "Mission Station Chief, Steve Tacchini had issued new orders [Thursday] morning ordering the drinking in Dolores Park to be brought under control." So, people were busted yesterday for imbibing in the wrong place.

While your editor couldn't care less for Dolores Park as of late -- compared to the Wal-Mart-ish size and scope of DP, we prefer boutique parks like the bludgeoningly charming South Park, or that park on Folsom Street where men play basketball -- we know this affects many of you. That said, you can circumvent a pricey citation by putting your booze in awater bottle and/or ingesting your drug(s) of choice before setting up shop at the park. Ta-da.

Seurat-Inspired A Sunday Afternoon at Dolores Park Defaced

The delicious folks over at Mission Mission have some very sad news.
The delicious folks over at Mission Mission have some very sad news. Well, sad for those of you who care about the Mission and/or Dolores Park. It seems Lisa from everyday photos (a mighty fine site featuring a glorious array of SF images) informed MM that the much-loved A Sunday Afternoon at Dolores Park--a re-imaging of George Seurat's --was defaced recently. The mural, located at 19th Street and Guerrero, was tagged <s>by graffiti artist Musk.</s>

How unruly.

<s>Anyway. Musk's addition, if you will, has caused all kinds of ire, prompting MM's Kevin Montgomery to say: "[Musk's] been degraded from 'street artist' to '15-year-old boy with mommy issues.'" Which raises an interesting point: are you still an esteemed Mission scribble wunderkind if you poop on another artist's work?</s> Um, oops, Musk didn't deface it. But he did (allegedly) deface residential buildings and houses in the Mission. So. Yeah. There you go.

It also raises a more important point: Dolores Park should stage an outdoor setting of Sunday in the Park With George, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Sondheim musical based on Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte. It would be most splendid. Really. Not only would Dolores Park prove a perfect setting, but it would be so much more entertaining than that Communist Mime Troupe, or whatever it's called, that's staged there annually. A sample of the show waits for you after the jump.
Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

Moving Van Crashes Into SF Building

According to a few frantic Twitter messages this morning, a moving van plowed into the side of a building, either near Dolores Park or somewhere in the Tenderloin.

SF News

accident

castro

crash

dolores_park

gas_leak

Brock Keeling

According to a few frantic Twitter messages this morning, a moving van plowed into the side of a building, either near Dolores Park or somewhere in the Tenderloin.

cbs5: "Just In: moving van crashes into building on Turk St at Gough in SF. Gas leak possible."

Yipes. Careful out there on the road, big wheel drivers. Anyway, according to CBS5's latest message, It happened at 942 Church, and Emergency_In_SF claims the same. In addition to a multitude of cheap food options and pretty parks to sit in and drink beer, there are free outdoor movies and wine country right up the road where some wineries still don't charge for tasting. And there's also the laid back, relaxation-before-ambition ethos that's endemic here and that we all know and love.

This week's piece by Peter Jamison on so-called "Funemployment" in the Weekly trots around some fuzzy ideas about overachieving Millennials being influenced by Gen Xers' slackerdom and coming around to the idea that they should just enjoy themselves while collecting government checks. There's nothing too groundbreaking being said here, but this one hateful pullquote did stand out to us, from a certain well-to-do techie named Grace who writes an overly precious blog called Stuff Unemployed People Like:

"The people I know, nobody's strapped for cash," says Grace, a laid-off tech company worker who splits her time between San Francisco and Sunnyvale... (Among the entries: "Buying Game Consoles with Unemployment Checks," "Buying Perrier with Food Stamps," and "Shunning Public Transportation Because 'It's for Poor People.'"...) "We didn't live above our means. We didn't get involved in the real-estate market. For me, it sucks not to have income, but I'm definitely laid-back enough about it that I can make unemployment work."

You know what, Grace? We think we speak for all the unemployed people who are getting by okay, going to Dolores Park (by bus), catching up on their Netflix but still feeling fairly anxious and screwed by their current predicament when we say, Go fuck yourself.

Guerrilla Movie Marketing: Still Relevant?

Has anyone else been peeved by the "Angels & Demons" graffiti marketing effort that's recently decorated the paths in Dolores Park? Doubtless some clever marketing firm who specializes in "non-traditional" or "guerrilla marketing" convinced Sony Pictures that their new DaVinci Code sequel could really use some of their ultra-hip techniques to spread the word to that coveted 18-34 demo, and they were going to do it by spray-painting the title of the film on sidewalks in places where said demo hangs out. (We know we're buying into their crap by even posting this, but we are expressing our quiet protest by not linking to the film and by gently discouraging all of you from seeing it). Our questions are: a) Has anyone ever decided to go see a movie because they saw the title spray-painted in their favorite park, and b) does that shit wash off?

Fear Not, Everyone: We Will Have The Good Weather Back Soon

An afternoon in Dolores Park from Aaron Fagerstrom on Vimeo.

misc

dolores_park

weather

Jay Barmann

Nearly 3,500 people were still hanging out at the park at 8 p.m. on Sunday when the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence first attempted to help clean up the post-Easter-celebration mess. So, about 30 of them returned at 9 a.m. yesterday to clean up the lingering litter.

Here are Sister Maple Syrup's observations regarding the attendees' littering patterns:

A smoker will make a tidy pile of their cig butts next to their blanket all day, then leave that pile on the ground when they leave the park.

There was an amazing array of bottle caps from beer. Who in their right mind rips cap off a bottle and tosses it into grass where people play soccer…?

A lot of people must believe that it’s okay to leave jello, lemon rinds, strawberries, and other assorted cocktail garnishes because they’re “biodegradeable” — giving no thought to how gross that might be to step in.

Surprisingly, only one dirty condom found, and 4 or so wrapped condoms. Glad those who had them took them with them!

+++

I know Dolores Park has these kinds of messes every weekend, and there’s no team like us to come along after to clean it up, so I empathize with those of you who live there. Please know that we (the Sisters) definitely DO care enough to clean things up, and Monday morning we managed to leave the park cleaner than it was when we showed up Sunday morning to pick up dog poop before our event :)

Take, for example, Dolores Park: our friends at Mission Mission first alerted us to an apparent crackdown on "adult behavior" in the Park last year (including semi- and full nudity and drinking) and now there's plans to expand the damn playground up into previously grown-up dominated territory?

Spring is in the Air: Sunday Afternoon at Dolores Park

We hear Saturday at Dolores Park was off-the-hook, while we sat at home working all day.
