Speaking of street food, Rec & Parks has given the OK to La Cocina (the non-profit incubator of such vendors as Estrellita's Snacks, Onigilly, and Zella's Soulful Kitchen and the organizer of last year's Street Food Festival) and Blue Bottle Coffee to operate permanent street food carts in Dolores Park and Justin Herman Plaza. According to Caleb Zigas at La Cocina, the carts should be in place by late March or early April, pending Rec & Parks Commission approval at their meeting on February 18th. [7x7, Grub Street SF]
Fully Legal Food Carts Coming to Dolores Park
Drinking in Dolores Park Curbed?
People are crying foul after SFPD had the unmitigated gall to hand out citations to people boozing it up in Dolores Park. Drinking alcohol in San Francisco parks, as most of you know, is verboten. No matter how many shows at Amnesia you've attended. No matter how often you prattle on about the salted caramel at Bi-Rite Ice Cream Shoppe. No matter how age-inappropriate your haircut and attire is. Drinking in public is illegal.
Seurat-Inspired A Sunday Afternoon at Dolores Park Defaced
The delicious folks over at Mission Mission have some very sad news. Well, sad for those of you who care about the Mission and/or Dolores Park. It seems Lisa from everyday photos (a mighty fine site featuring a glorious array of SF images) informed MM that the much-loved A Sunday Afternoon at Dolores Park--a re-imaging of George Seurat's --was defaced recently. The mural, located at 19th Street and Guerrero, was tagged by graffiti artist Musk.
Moving Van Crashes Into SF Building
According to a few frantic Twitter messages this morning, a moving van plowed into the side of a building, either near Dolores Park or somewhere in the Tenderloin.
Google Maps Misspells "Dolores Park"
This goes out to all the commenters who get up-in-arms about copyedit errors: Burrito Justice & Mission Mission point us to the fact that the folks at the helm over at Google Maps clearly don't spend enough time in Dolores Park. While the name "Mission Dolores Park" is spelled correctly on the main park label, it is spelled "Mission Delores Park" elsewhere on the same map. For shame.
SF Weekly Catches On to 'Funemployment'
Whether you're an optimist or a pessimist, getting laid off from your job in the shittiest economy in decades isn't exactly swell news, but certainly we live in one of the best cities anywhere to be jobless and broke. In addition to a multitude of cheap food options and pretty parks to sit in and drink beer, there are free outdoor movies and wine country right up the road where some wineries still don't charge for tasting. And there's also the laid back, relaxation-before-ambition ethos that's endemic here and that we all know and love.
Guerrilla Movie Marketing: Still Relevant?
Has anyone else been peeved by the "Angels & Demons" graffiti marketing effort that's recently decorated the paths in Dolores Park? Doubtless some clever marketing firm who specializes in "non-traditional" or "guerrilla marketing" convinced Sony Pictures that their new DaVinci Code sequel could really use some of their ultra-hip techniques to spread the word to that coveted 18-34 demo, and they were going to do it by spray-painting the title of the film on sidewalks in places where said demo hangs out. (We know we're buying into their crap by even posting this, but we are expressing our quiet protest by not linking to the film and by gently discouraging all of you from seeing it). Our questions are: a) Has anyone ever decided to go see a movie because they saw the title spray-painted in their favorite park, and b) does that shit wash off?
Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence Note Behavior of Dolores Park Litterers
Mission Mission posted this appalling photo of the trash left behind at Dolores Park on Easter Sunday, which was taken at 7 a.m. yesterday morning.
Dolores Park to Get Even More Eff-ing Kid-Friendly
Not that we have anything against kids -- they're great, for realz, we just don't have/want one -- but in a city with possibly the lowest percentage of families with children of any major city in the country (15% last time we checked), we sometimes wonder if the pro-kid populace isn't getting too much of a say about how we adults get to play in this town. Take, for example, Dolores Park: our friends at Mission Mission first alerted us to an apparent crackdown on "adult behavior" in the Park last year (including semi- and full nudity and drinking) and now there's plans to expand the damn playground up into previously grown-up dominated territory?
Spring is in the Air: Sunday Afternoon at Dolores Park
We hear Saturday at Dolores Park was off-the-hook, while we sat at home working all day. Lucky for us, Sunday was just as fun- and character-filled, if not more so. Which day did you go, and how was it for you? Let us know in the comments.
