Saturday's Jean Paul Gaultier gala at the deYoung Museum could go down as one of the most stylish yet amiable events in the city's drunken party history, with barely a tacky red prom dress redo in sight. The bash, which saw the likes of tony society ilk mingling with horny leather queens, celebrated Gaultier's exhibit now at the deYoung. The designer arrived at the massive party with chronic burlesquer Dita Von Teese, both of whom were mobbed by fame-hungry attendees looking to get some face time.

Looking For Something To Wear To The Gaultier Opening?
The town is abuzz with the opening of this retrospective of the work of fashion designer John Paul Gaultier, opening this weekend at the De Young Museum which we should note is becoming quite the powerhouse, nationally, when it comes to the world of costume collections and fashion-as-art shows. Perhaps you aren't a member and weren't lucky or rich enough to score a ticket to the gala opening party tonight. But nevertheless, there's a talk with Suzy Menkes and JPG tomorrow (which will also be streamed live on SFGov) from 11 a.m. to noon, and the show opens to the public tomorrow, and Castro consignment boutique Sui Generis just got a few vintage Gaultier looks for men in the store which you might want to consider wearing. See a couple more below.
Breaking JP Gaultier Update: Museum Views Deemed 'Absolument Magnifique'
Skull-shatteringly brilliant designer Jean Paul Gaultier is in town. As many of you now know. He is currently in awe of the views as seen from the deYoung tower. "The view from the @deYoungMuseum tower is absolument magnifique," he exclaimed Wednesday afternoon, adding, "#iLoveSanFrancisco."
Kylie Minogue: Perfect Poster Girl For Jean Paul Gaultier At The DeYoung
Who better to promote Jean Paul Gaultier's upcoming exhibit at the deYoung Mueseum than Kylie Minogue? No one, that's who. The pop icon's image, as seen above, will grace poster walls, lampposts, and a sundry of buildings in the Bay Area during the exhibition starting this week. (Her laced visage and body was also seen at pitstops in Montreal.)
14 Reasons To Love Arthur Tress' San Francisco 1964
In the summer of 1964, just before San Francisco turned into an epicenter of groovy vibes, a 23-year-old Arthur Tress traveled by bus from Mexico to San Francisco to visit his sister. Thank God he did. Otherwise we might not have had this astounding collection of photos, soon to be on display at the deYoung. Showcasing a work that reflects old and new aspects of the city, Tress explained to Time, "I was thinking as a kind of amalgam, all these little bits and pieces, almost as if you're making a collage—a symphony of the city."
Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibit: Designer's Childhood Teddy Bear Wearing First Cone Bra
First came the works of Vivienne Westwood. Then a seamless Alexander McQueen show. Now the deYoung Museum intends to outdo itself with an earth's core-shattering retrospective of Jean Paul Gaultier. Opening on March 24, the de Young Museum presents The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, the first exhibition devoted to the French designer famous for the cone bra, Madonna's Blond Ambition tour, costuming numerous Luc Besson and Pedro Almodovar movies, and so much more. His personal themes of “equality, diversity and perversity" will highlight the exhibit on view at the de Young from March 24 August 19, 2012.
De Young Ranks Fifth In Attendance
Let's face it, museums are dull. They're quiet, full of old photos and paintings, and demand an attention span that isn't rife with ADHD tendencies. The San Francisco's de Young Museum, however, is one of the best, and people agree. According to an article in today's Chronicle, the de Young ranks fifth in attendance for U.S. museums, placing it "after the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the National Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago." An impressive feat for a museum that doesn't even have one of those cool static electricity balls that make your hair stand on end. [Chron]

The Dreamer Deferred
Pedaling through Golden Gate Park the other day, we noticed the conspicuous absence of the giant purple half-head that has graced a lawn near the deYoung for a few months. We had all kinds of mean things to say about the head (adolescent pseudo-profundity, like something constructed for a Led Zeppelin album cover), but on the other hand, we smoked enough pot in high school to think, hey, awesome, a giant half-buried purple head with a 1000-yard stare!
nugget o' history: Anniversary of a Flesh Wound
The violent melodrama characterizing the recent murder of a journalist investigating "Your Black Muslim Bakery" has conjured the entire Bay Area history of political violence into our memories. Dan White, James P. Casey, David S. Terry... the list is long and impressive. The anniversary of one of our bloodier favorites is coming up this Thursday -- it's hard to believe that a mere 128 years have passed since the editor of the San Francisco...

SFist Raises a Fist for Surrealism
We here at the SFist are big fans of all things fist-y, and when we heard about the De Young’s latest acquisition, appropriately titled Fist, we had to go see what it was all about. In short, the bronze sculpture by Surrealist artist Enrico Donati has to be about the fugliest thing we’ve ever seen. It’s big and green and has two very creepy glass eyes attached to it in a way that makes the giant hand seem like it’s looking right at you. We didn’t want to be too quick to judge, however, and the more we gave it a chance, the more it became sort of endearing. The “face” appears to be jovial, like it’s just having a good laugh after one too many at the bar. Sort of like us at Thursday night happy hour. And that's why we've decided to adopt the creature as our unofficial mascot.
SFist Cares: It's a Motherf***ing Walk-Off!
The SFist offices are jazzed about the season finale of Project Runway tonight. Some of that is because this season was pretty lame compared to last, so we're just happy it's coming to a close and we can move on and forget. What we think would liven it all up would be better challenges, like this one: Take a box of donated thrift store clothes and make something beautiful out of them.
There’s A Brand New Dance But I Don’t Know Its Name
When SFist Jackson announced, "Hey, I saw your BFF Dede today", we went scarlet (we don't wear green) with envy. When do we get OUR Dede Wilsey sighting? Taunting our jealousy, Jackson sent us this:
A Tribute to Leacock and Pennebaker Film Festival
If we didn't think calling in sick Thursday and Friday would attract unwanted attention, we'd totally do it so we could take in all the screenings at the Tribute to Leacock and Pennebaker festival running March 2−5 the Castro and the de Young Museum’s Koret Auditorium.
