Also, "with incompetence comes the illusion of superiority."

Cornell psychologist David Dunning and colleague Justin Kruger are responsible for the study, reported on by LiveScience (and it's making SFGate commenters go batshit, of course), and a sociologist in Germany has already used their findings to build a computer model of a democratic election, showing that people will always end up electing someone with "slightly above-average leadership skills," as opposed to people with really great leadership skills, because most people aren't good leaders and aren't capable of recognizing them either.

Anyway, we just have one word for you to support their thesis: Santorum.

Back in October, the Yes on 8 "people" challenged California's Superintendent of Schools, Jack O'Connell, to a debate about gay marriage. According to Yes, even the remotest possibility of learning anything about gay marriage is harmful to children. Nothing hateful about that!

Anyway, the side refuse to debate. In fact, not only did (self-described) Campaign Manager Steve Smith hide from the debate, but his response was obscured from public view in a hard-to-find PDF. (But we dug up the text and included it after the jump.)

But now there's a debate happening for real! Gloria Allred and Andy Pugno will argue about how California defines marriage On January 14 at The National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, 111 North Central Ave, Los Angeles. (Gloria is one of the lawyers suing to overturn Prop 8; Andy is a lawyer who opposes California's equal protection clause.) Tickets are $20, and throwing of vegetables is strictly forbidden.

This is a fight that, obviously, the gays will win in the long run. In fact, the run probably isn't even that long. Getting the anti-marriage folks on record, explaining just how crazy their position is, can only hasten along the cause of civil equality.

Lots of bans on travel and gifts are involved and we'll see what happens the moment she does become Madame Speaker. Our guess is that it'll pass with loopholes a' plenty.

Meanwhile, that weird disconnect between SF and the rest of the country over the "alleged" liberal-ness of Ms. Pelosi is becoming a national story as the LA Times is now reporting on it and from there, it made it's way to Wonkette. We love reading people snarking on the Bay Guardian from all the way in D.C.

Meanwhile, the Ignored Three-- Krissy Keefer (Green Party), Philip Berg (Libertarian Party) and Mike DeNunzio (Republican Party)-- are going to have a debate despite the lack of attendance on the person they're trying to replace. It will be Nov. 1 at 4 PM at the Luggage Store. The Luggage Store? Couldn't they at least pick a place that says political seriousness? Was the bowling alley at the Metreon booked? And at 4? Who's around at 4 to attend a debate anyways.

Afterwards, Krissy and her Krissy Korp are going to be headed to the Warfield where a fund-raiser will occur featuring Pelosi and the Man from Hope himself, Bill Clinton. The vigil is a "Funeral for Democracy" rally and everyone will wear black and light candles. Democracy's death, of course, is the result of a "dance-activist" who attends rallies for Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez not being deemed serious enough to be asked to an official debate. If that isn't the death to democracy, we don't know what else is.

SFist Interviews: SF For Democracy

Remember those heady days of 2004, when the Democrats thought they might have had a chance to take back the White House with Howard Dean? Well, we all know how that turned out. But it turns out a bunch of people took that whole grassroots, Internet, "taking back the Democratic wing of the Democratic party" stuff seriously enough that they started a group called Democracy for America, dedicated to furthering the mission throughout all levels of politics -- from local to state to national. Members of their local branch, SF for Democracy, were kind enough to sit down with SFist and outline what exactly it is they do.

[*disclosure: your correspondent has met some, but not all, of these interviewees socially before -- but is not a member of either SF for Democracy or Democracy for America.]

So do I understand that one of you has a Howard Dean Scream cell phone ring tone? Where do you download that?
Will Easton (communications director): That's me. www.jivjiv.com/deantones. It used to be free, but unfortunately they forced me to start charging 99 cents for it.

What's your group's mission, and how do you differentiate yourselves from other local political groups in San Francisco?
WE: We want to take back citizens' ownership of our democracy by mobilizing grassroots participation in the political process. About half of eligible Americans do not vote -- that's a huge problem. San Francisco is a little better -- but we have a ton of room for improvement.

The high organically shaped counter facing the window is ideal for solo dining with a good read.

A clean, well-lighted place brings us naturally to For Whom The Bell Tolls, as, like Maria after an intimate encounter with Robert Jordan, we felt the earth shake. Unfortunately, it wasn't due to the satisfaction of our carnal desires, can't be in a vegan place, could it? It just so happened that the earth literally shook, 4.4 on the Richter scale in Santa Rosa.

But it did spell out the question for us: is the food really this good, or was this just another quake? The answer is: pretty good, so that we even forget that no animal product was involved. You know, there are vegetarian restaurants which serve you meatless meatloafs made of tofurkey, and you think: this ain't right. Cha-Ya does not even pretend to replace meat, and just does its own thing, traditional Japanese way. For us, it's ideal: we are not conscious of eschewing meat, we're just enjoying a fine meal. Perchance he for whom this dishes is served is so satiated, as that he knows not it is meatless. We feel the same in South Indian restaurants (say, Udupi Palace) where the novelty (to us) of the cuisine hides the fact that it's vegetarian.

Call It Democracy, by Matt Kohn, is an exploration of the problem of electioneering in the 21st century -- from the oddities of the electoral college to Supreme Court shenanigans to missing electronic ballots to Colorado's electoral-vote splitting movement in 2004.

Okay, we're not too liberaler-than-thou to admit it -- electoral reform is really not the most interesting topic in the world to us. So it's with a great deal of relief that we can report that this movie is like one of those long DailyKos tinhat-wearing posts that you skip, or a long filmstrip with blue states and red states, or anything like that. The clips are interesting! The movie moves at a brisk pace! We didn't find ourselves trying to gouge our eyes out with a stick! That's good, right?

Cameos by stapler-throwers John Bolton and Kevin Shelley, after the jump.

Well, when we suggested that Sophie start a blog to help counter some of the diatribes by critics in her constituency, we were only partly joking. Sure, we were jealous that our friends in District Six have a blogging supe, and we don't. But really, we tend to like Supervisor Maxwell, being the child of activists ourselves. But her public perception is about to take a hit again, this time on an international level, and as usual, she doesn't entirely deserve it.

First, Michael Bassik over at Personal Democracy Forum posted on a new city ordinance [PDF] which, according to Chad Jacobs over at the City Attorney's office would require blogs with over 500 readers (uh, yeah, good luck establishing what site metric you'll use for that -- we use sessions, by the way) and that mention local candidates for office to register with the city's Ethics Commission and report all blog-related costs over $1,000. Now Slashdot has picked it up, angering blog nerds worldwide. In an update to his original post, Edward Champion says that Greg Assay, an aide to Supervisor Maxwell, has assured him that blogs will be considered news outlets and exempt -- which is awesome, because now we can wave that around when we apply for our press pass!

We agree with Chris Nolan, who lays out the history behind the ordinance in a great post, when she points out that she's "[O]n record as favoring full disclosure of payments made to anyone during a campaign." And we're also going to agree with her assesment that this new ordinance is poorly conceived and written, not evil. We certainly do our best to disclose our personal interest in a story, but rest assured that we're not going to be taking any money in exchange for positive coverage on SFist. Though if you do have a pro or anti Chris Daly screed to promote, you can always buy an ad. In the meantime, you can drop by City Hall and see what the Rules Committee (Alioto-Pier, Mirkarimi and Maxwell) has to say tomorrow. We're going to doubt that this passes on first reading.

Photogs Of The World: Unite!

Thanks to everyone who made it out in the rain to take pictures! By all indications, that answer is "yes," although the difficulty in declaring victory will be in proving the negative -- how will we necessarily know if people are no longer being stopped? We'll give Muni a grace period to get the staff up to date on the policies as outlined by Michael Burns. Our worry is that his response, like all the responses we've heard so far from photographers who've been stopped, is that the events of September 11th seem be the go-to justification for over-aggressive policing, when in fact that event is not relevant to the debate. Why bother protecting the nation if the nation only exists because of our shared respect for the Constitution, Democracy and the rule of law?

We'll post some more of our own pictures after the jump. In the meantime, we'd like to encourage everyone who attended to add their thoughts via trackbacks or comments, with links to their photography. And hopefully the word will get out that if another photographer, journalist or filmmaker is harassed, we now have evidence that they can not be cited or charged.
To follow up on our previous story, we're not sure whether the Muni photography ban is the biggest threat to our personal freedom, but we have a feeling that if we don't blow this all a little out of proportion, it will probably be ignored. Civil liberties in our country seem to be dying a death by inches, and what worries us more than simply having a rule banning photography on Muni station platforms is that it is being enforced without having been publicly reviewed or even codified in a legal document. Secret laws selectively enforced is not our idea of Democracy.

First of all, Steve's story has been corroborated in many details by other sources we found in comments to both his own post and other posts regarding the issue. For instance, Merlin Mann of 43 Folders fame relates the following tale in the comments to Jeff Veen's post on the topic:

"Except for the police intervention point, this is similar to an experience I had at Castro Station Sunday before last (2/6). I was taking this photo and heard the voice over the Station intercom very pointedly announcing that taking photos on MUNI is illegal.

"I walked straight over and asked what law I was meant to be breaking and under whose authority I was being asked to stop. They had no idea. I wouldn’t leave without a code that they could cite. Spent 12 minutes watching two workers flip through comb-bound books to find the reference to this notional law. After 15 minutes, one of the booth folk stepped out, and was very nice but not particularly helpful. I said 'Is this a city, state, or federal law that you claim I’m breaking?' and she said, (yes, I wrote it all down), 'I think it’s because of 9/11.'"

When we emailed, he pointed out that "I don't have an axe to grind with those MUNI folks—whom I perceived thought they were just doing their job. I guess I'm more troubled by the idea that some apparently baseless legal zeitgeist might be allowed to persist at a higher level at MUNI." Indeed.

Steve got in touch after we had emailed him and we had a lengthy chat about the incident. Steve wanted to stress that no cause will be served by angrily confronting, verbally abusing or otherwise disrespecting Muni and law enforcement officials. He comes from a law enforcement family, both his step-father and mother having been officers. While the actions of the two officers in this case extremely upset him, it behooves us to remember that they are following the rules as laid down by their superiors. Of course, in the end, we are their superiors -- hence the concerns over the lack of public information on the ban.

For instance, a full 26.5% percent of the voters (2,596 people) voting for Mirkarimi for first choice voted the Guardian-endorsed slate of Mirkarimi/Haaland/Feldstein. Go Brugmann! And poor Robert Haaland, always a best man but never a groom -- 49.6% of Mirkarimi's support had Haaland listed as the number 2 guy.

In other RCV-related news, there's a small tiff brewing over whether the Chinese-American community understood the new RCV system or not. Critics charge that a large number of Chinese voters only voted for one candidate and that in subsequent surveys, a larger-than-expected number expressed either no opinion or dislike of the new system. The RCV people have some methodological complaints with the critics' studies, which are summarized by Adriel Hampton too (scroll down). (Ah, it reminds us of the heady Mystery Pollster accuracy-of-polling-projections days of three weeks ago.) It seems to our non-professional eyes that Tsai and Sing may have done the traditional split of the Chinese-American vote in District 1, with or without ranked choice voting, but we don't actually know how to read these numbers well enough to figure that out.

Finally, as the numbers start trickling in and the absentee and provisional ballots get counted (scroll down), it turns out turnout in the San Francisco elections was around 72%. (Sorry we wrongly accused you guys of not turning out earlier.) Lisa Feldstein has fought her way back to 3rd place in District 5 (fat lot of good it'll do her, but still), relegating Nick Waugh back to 4th, but Heather Hiles remains trapped in 5th place in the school board race. No word if she's calmed the f*** down enough to concede yet.

The big news is, of course, that the current president of the Board, Matt Gonzalez, is not running for reelection. He says he wants to work at 'a private law firm' (read: make money). Rushing in to fill the vacuum of leadership in District 5, thirty-one eager Haight area residents have announced their intentions to run for the seat.
