The "people" behind Prop 8 -- the anti-marriage amendment -- may or may not be up to something sneaky. We observed yesterday that their ads were showing up on Fog City Journal -- a site that, we suspected, wouldn't want anything to do with that sort of degenerate advertising. We were also surprised to see them on the otherwise-reputable FiveThirtyEight.com.

And now this: a gay blog ( gay) has accused the Prop 8 campaign of purposely buying Google ads on gay sites. This has resulted in bizarre situations such as the one pictured at left: where yes-on-8 messages appear next to a plea to defeat the ban.

We doubt that this is on purpose. If Prop 8 really wanted to spend its ad money effectively, why would it buy ads on sites where their lies are completely unwelcome? They probably intended to target sites that mention homosex, not sites that actively celebrate it; and because the ad placement is all automated, these little faux pas happened.

We're not sure who should be more uncomfortable here -- the nice bloggers whose sites are being sullied by deceitful, discriminatory advertisements; or the anti-marriage donors whose money is going into the pockets of gays and their allies.
very

Princess Gloves Come off in No On 8 Fight

A few days ago, there was a new ad released by the people backing Prop 8 (the ballot amendment that would allow an out-of-state group to veto whatever California marriages they want). So we've had to transcribe the good bits.

"The advertisement strongly implies that parents ... will have 'no right to object' to what is taught ... This is false. ... California's law ...clearly states that parents or guardians of public school children may excuse their children..."

"The Sacramento Superior Court clearly and firmly rejected that statement as 'false and misleading.'

'...state law does not school districts to teach anything about marriage or same-sex marriage at any grade level. Moreover, for those school districts that choose to include instruction ... they allow parents to excuse their children' ... We strongly urge you not to repeat those falsehoods."

Will the pushy memo have any effect? We want to say it probably will; but in our heart of hearts, we know it probably won't. Just like Fog City Journal, which is currently running some Yes On 8 ads of its own, the TV stations will probably be unmoved.

Update: The Sacramento Superior Court has ruled that the individual pictured at right is not, in fact, Richard Peterson. We will, however, continue to repeat the falsehood.
