Responding to ShotSpotter over on the 1700 block of Sunnydale Avenue just after midnight, authorities found a 23-year-old man was shot. The unidentified victim, suffering from life-threatening injuries, was whisked to San Francisco General Hospital. He later died at the hospital.

Veterans' Hospital Lab Worker Dies Of Meningitis
A 25-year-old researcher at S.F.'s VA hospital died Saturday morning very shortly after showing the first symptoms of a serious meningitis infection, which he likely contracted from working with the bacteria in his lab. The man, who lives on Treasure Island with a girlfriend and roommates, began feeling sick Friday night and went to bed. When he awoke with worse symptoms (generally high fever, stiff neck, headache, vomiting) the next morning, he had his friends take him back to the VA hospital, where he died a short time later.
Man Killed By Muni Train Identified
According to reports, the man who was killed by an outbound M Muni train on Monday afternoon has been identified as 62-year-old wheelchair-abound Daniel Dillen. The victim managed to somehow get himself down onto the tracks at Civic Center Station and get into the track where a train sliced off his leg. He later died as a result of those injures at a nearby hospital.
Mom Dies After Daughter Drives Car Onto Train Tracks
During a harrowing incident in San Leandro on Tuesday night, a woman driving with her mother became stuck on the train tracks after mistakenly assuming the tracks were a street. With an oncoming train heading their way, the daughter quickly jumped out of the vehicle. Attempts to pull her mother out of the car, however, proved futile. The train collided with the car and killed 56-year-old Pei Chuan Haung.

One of the foremost poets and thinkers of the 20th century, Adrienne Rich, has died, SF Chronicle book editor John McMurtrie reports via Twitter. In addition to winning loads of awards for her work, she was also an anti-war, civil right, and feminist activist.

Two terrier mixes found with missing limbs, caked in their own urine and feces, and eventually put to sleep due to their injuries were discovered Friday at an abandoned San Bruno condo complex. Once found, the pair were whisked to a nearby San Mateo veterinary hospital, which prompted the staff to exclaim that "the dogs were in the worst condition they had ever seen.
Falling Tree Causes Wrecks, Man's Death On Highway 13
A multi-car crash on Highway 13 Thursday morning resulted in several car wrecks and the death of an 18-year-old Washington man. The tree crashed down onto southbound traffic near Park Boulevard in Oakland at around 4:20 a.m.
Bay Area Singing Twins Die Within Hours Of One Another
The Miller Twins, two performing young girls who grew up in the Bay Area performing on local TV show The Hoffman Hayride and others, just died in their home in South Lake Tahoe at the age of 73, within hours of each other, of apparent natural causes. They had lived a reclusive life for many years, distancing themselves from friends and relatives, and news media has been putting out a call for any known living kin who might, like, want their stuff.
Dead Woman Found Floating In SF Bay
The fuzz was called to Pier 45 today after two tourists spotted a dead woman floating in the San Francisco Bay at around 11:20 a.m. The Chronicle reports, "Police, firefighters and a crew from the city's fire boat found the body near Shed B of the pier, not far from the USS Pampanito submarine."
East Bay Motorcyclist Plunges Off Overpass Wall, Dies
A motorcyclist, 22, driving along I-80 at around 3 a.m. crashed into an overpass wall, fell over "dozens of feet," and died. "The motorcyclist was transitioning from northbound Interstate 880 to westbound Interstate 80 near the MacArthur Maze at 3:02 a.m. when he slammed his 1994 Yamaha X7 motorcycle into a cement guardrail," reports The Chronicle.
East Bay BART Train Kills Man
A little before 7 p.m. on Monday, a man died after walking on the BART tracks at the MacArthur station. A Richmond-bound train plowed into the unidentified man, killing him instantly. According to Oakland Tribune, "He fell at the far end of the platform, and officials found no witnesses other than the train operator during the early hours of the investigation."

In honor of Whitney Houston, San Francisco-based band Girls performed their rendition of "I Will Always Love You," Houston's famous cover originally written and performed by Dolly Parton. The duo performed it at Singapore's Laneway Festival hours after Houston passed away on Saturday at the Beverly Hilton.
Indie Film Veteran Bingham Ray Dies At Sundance
Sigh. San Francisco Film Society just announced that beloved Executive Director Bingham Ray died today, January 23, while attending the 2012 Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. In addition to manning the noted SF Film Society, Ray cofounded October Films. October, billed as "one of the foremost independent film companies of the 1990s," snagged two Oscars and scored 13 Oscar nominations and other cinema prizes at the Cannes Film Festival. Some of October Films' credits include Secrets & Lies, The Apostle, Cookie's Fortune, The Celebration, Lost Highway, The Last Seduction, and Breaking the Waves.
Suicide, Liver Disease Now More Popular Than Homicide
In a new set of data just out from the CDC, culled from 2010, homicide is no longer one of the top 15 causes of death for Americans. This is the first time since 1965 that murder hasn't made the list, which the CDC has been publishing since 1949. More popular causes of death these days are things that affect the elderly, like chronic liver disease, Parkinson's disease, and pneumonitis (lung damage caused by people who have choked on their food or who have lost the ability to swallow).
Berkeley City Clerk Found Dead Inside Her Home [Updated]
Deanna Despain, Berkeley's city clerk, was found dead inside her Oakland home (at on the 4100 block of Lyman Road) on Saturday morning. According to Berkeleyside, who broke the story, "The coroner’s office is not yet releasing any information about the death, referring enquiries to the Oakland Police Department."
Homeless Deaths Memorialized Tonight At Civic Center
The Coalition on Homelessness, San Francisco Network Ministries, and the general public will gather tonight to honor those who died while homeless. The memorial will happen at 5:30 p.m. at Civic Center Plaza across from City Hall. "The memorial is traditionally held on the winter solstice because, according to organizers, it represents the coldest, darkest time for the homeless population," notes BCN.

Before he sold his soul to Beelzebub by appearing in the UK's Celebrity Big Brother in the UK, noted director Ken Russell had made some of the most visually jarring yet controversial films of the 1970s. His death was announced Monday. He was 84.

And just like that, the death and surrounding melee of noted Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has sparked a minor backlash. Chinese Android Store Mocks Steve Jobs' Death
Via our sister site Shanghaiist, this poster was found outside an Android store (possibly a fake/imitation store or open source OS) in Sichuan, China. The poster reads, "Steve Jobs has kicked the bucket. Why would you still be buying Apple?" There also appears to be an Android critter kicking a black Apple logo. Charming.
Steve Jobs Is Dead
According to Apple, former Apple CEO and company co-founder Steve Jobs has died. He was only 56. Jobs died from advanced pancreatic cancer, which he had been battling since 2004. (If you recall, his Bloomberg News obituary was accidentally released a few years ago.) Apple posted the following announcement on the company site:

Gunfire broke out at an employee meeting at the Hanson Permanente Quarry in Cupertino this morning, killing two and leaving four wounded. KTVU reports, "The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department said an employee apparently became upset during a shift change meeting after 4 a.m., pulled out a weapon and opened fire at the company located near Stevens Creek Blvd. and Foothill."

An inspiration for artists like John Waters, among others, local filmmaker George Kuchar died on September 6 following a battle with cancer. The San Francisco Art Institute released the following statement today: "It is with great sadness that the San Francisco Art Institute announces that George Kuchar, a longtime professor and influential figure in experimental and underground filmmaking, died on September 6, 2011 following a battle with cancer."
Woman Struck, Killed by Muni Bus in Castro Identified
Authorities released the name of the 23-year-old woman struck and killed by a Muni bus on Friday afternoon. San Franciscan Emily Dunn was at the end of the crosswalk at the intersection of 18th and Hartford streets at around at 2:30 p.m. "when a bus that was making a left turn struck her."
