In San Francisco, a city that saw almost an entire generation of gay men obliterated by AIDS, activists gathered at the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park to hear Jeanne White Ginder give a tearful speech about her son, Ryan White, and the impact of the Ryan White Care Act.

Also, local activist Michael Petrelis honored Dr. Joseph Sonnabend, describing him as "an unsung hero of the epidemic who through his wisdom and integrity changed the course of the crisis extending and saving the lives of many people with AIDS around the world." A great read worth a moment of your time.

People from all around the world took some time out of their day to shift focus on HIV/AIDS, including French First Lady/supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, famous daughter Kelly Osborne, actor Alan Cumming, a Zimbabwean Big Brother contestant, Sienna Miller, and more. Here are some highlights from around the world.

Bike To Work Day Happens Thursday

Tomorrow, on what will reportedly be a hot day, government officials and and local activists will ask you to bike to work to "<a href="http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/05/14/BAT61...

SF News

bike

bike to work

cyclists

day

pedal power

Brock Keeling

Tomorrow, on what will reportedly be a hot day, government officials and and local activists will ask you to bike to work to "promote pedal power." While your Editor won't be riding anywhere tomorrow, SFist Jonathan manages to pedal from San Francisco to Palo Alto almost every day, so one day out of the year won't kill you, will it? Just be sure to stay hydrated; swipe on your toughest deodorant; snap on that fug helmet of yours; and leave the indignant, self-righteous attitude at home. And have fun.

Also, it goes without saying, please be careful. We just received word from a reader, Andrea, who witnessed a collision between a DeSoto Cab and a cyclist early this morning while riding the 24-Divis. She tells SFist:

I was on the 24 bus this morning around 8:40 when a DeSoto cab hit a person on a bike at the intersection of Divisadero and Geary. It was pretty scary and the bicyclist was on the ground in the middle of the intersection. I'm a new transplant to the Bay Area so I'm not sure if this is a notorious intersection for bike accidents, but it certainly seems like it could be. Anyway, just wanted to bring it to your attention and the numerous Bay Area bike riders.

No word yet as to the condition of the cyclist. If we hear anything, we'll update.

Anyway, back to BTWD: there will also be "energizer stations" -- where you can grab something free to drink and/or eat, like orange juice, bagels, and bananas -- dotted along Bay Area bike routes from San Francisco to Yountville. For a list of San Francisco's "energizer stations," follow the jump. For a comprehensive list, go here.

UPDATE: Being Prepared for Not Being Prepared: Grocery Stores Open Late?

Every year at Thanksgiving, you're bound to forget one or two critical items. A shallot, cooking twine, mushrooms, Ketel One -- something will slip your mind and you run the risk of having your Thanksgiving dinner collapse in on itself. And then you've ruined everything. Everything!

But who can we prevent such yellow wallpapered hysteria? This is where you come in: do you know of any grocery stores that stay open late on Thanksgiving Day? A good list of open-late store would sure keep our audience from curling up in the fetal position on Thanksgiving Day.

So far we know that Whole Foods (SOMA) stays open until 2 p.m., Golden Produce (Church/Market) until 3 p.m., Rainbow Grocery is closed (no doubt taking the day off to mourn the genocide of Native Americans by the pilgrims), and some of your finer 7-11 might have a box of Stove-Top Stuffing and canned gravy available. Any others?

Update: Inspired by our cry for stores that are open late, Menu Pages has also complied a brief list of SF stores open late on Thanksgiving.

All Safeway stores in the city are open until 6 p.m.
